Hairstyles how-to's

seanutbutter, that looks to me like just curling the ends with a curling iron and backcombing your hair in a headband section and combing it back. lots of hairspray!

Thanks for the advice! I just have one question - what do you mean by the headband section?

I feel kind of silly, but how do I achieve this? I would just braid my bangs and bobby pin it, no? I don't have any bobby pins on hand so I haven't tried.

not sure if i have to source here, but i got this picture off of livejournal. :)

^ Looks to me like she's just clipped the braid in the back, either with a bobby pin or other variety of hair clip. A small barrette would probably work, if you have one on hand.

^^ I love that look! I'm going to try something similar tomorrow, except I'm going to wear my hair up and do more of a crown like braid around my head.

Any ideas on this hairstyle?

Just wanted to let you all know that I finally, finally figured this hairstyle out. :D I want to my hairstylist yesterday and she, as usual, worked magic on my hair.

Her method was actually quite simple - instead of using rollers or a curling iron to get the curls, she used a flat iron. The result was a very tight curl at the ends, which she adjusted slightly to create larger, looser curls. And, like PonyShow said in another post, she backcombed my hair on the top of my head (and used plenty of hairspray).

Here are a few comparison pictures to show how similar the hairstyle is. I'm so happy to know it's not as difficult as I initially thought! I'm on the right in each picture (of course).

You're hairdresser did a great job, seanutbutter. Was the hairstyle for a special occssion?

Nope - I'm just all dressed up with nowhere to go. :p When I tried my hand at the hairstyle yesterday and today, I didn't backcomb as much as my hairstylist did, so the result looked slightly more casual. Anyway, it's fun to experiment. ^_^

^ It's always great to have fabulous looking hair, even if you're just staying at home or going to the supermarket. :D I just wish I had the time and patience to get my hair to look good everyday. I can barely use a hair straightener and I don't even what to think of what would happen if I tried to backcomb my hair!

I'm not sure about the entire hairstyle (I'd need to see pictures from different angles), but you can achieve volume by backcombing your hair. Just separate your hair into small sections, then lift a section away from your head and run a comb down your hair (in the opposite way you'd normally comb). Then use plenty of hairspray to keep it in place.

Do note, however, that this method won't work very well if you don't have layers in your hair. I'd recommend going to a hairstylist to see what works best with you.

How can I get wavy hair like Amanda Seyfried's in Mamma Mia?

I love Amanda Seyfried's hair in the movie Mamma Mia. Mine is the same length and probably around the same thickness as hers, except mine is so straight. How can I get wavy hair like hers? :flower:

Hello,

I'm trying to figure out what they put in the models' hair to make it flat and sleek like this... and frizz-free... I like that it's shiny but not wet-looking --I tried a pomade that was too smelly and made it look too wet.

Maybe someone could ID these products... backstage from the same Prada show.

ola, i loovvee the look of the sexy-wavy hair at the VS shows and this is just a backstage photo of how they do it!!
But I don't understand what kinda pins they are using in the hair and do i just put them in when my hair is partially dry?? her hair looks soo glossy, i love it. Also, it looks like they are using small strands of hair at the sides and large chunky pieces on top.. plus the hair on the very top don't seem to be rolled very tight.

I think they might be duckbill clips. Those are very useful in styling curly/wavy hair.

Guy here...

I'm trying to do this type of hairstyle...

But I have extremely straight hair
Do I have to buy one of those curling irons?

if you have a bobby pin, you could try with them curlying your hair with your hands and pinning it down.

Just curious, is it likely that Audrey is wearing a hairpiece in this photograph? I love the hairstyle and am interested in trying it out on myself, but I'm not sure if it's possible without using a hairpiece. If there is another way (involving plenty of backcombing, I'm sure), can someone please tell me how? Thanks!

does anyone know of any good youtube videos showing how to style your hair? I've practiced a few but I am looking for more to try! - I am always trying to find new ways to do my hair :)

thanks in advance!

Have you checked out ilovegerardo's videos? She has a number of helpful guides, especially if you're going for retro looks. I'm not sure what exactly you're looking for, but hopefully that will help!

it helps if you have a lot of hair. what i do is a high ponytail leaving side parts out of it (very well combed, and a little lose) and the tip below the elastic band or whatever turn it inside and hold it with bobby pins. the mess that remains there i cover it with the side parts of hair.
hope it's understable...
