Aldo Bologna, a visual merchandiser for John Galliano in Milan, and Victor Blanco, a stylist and personal shopper in Madrid, are BFFs. They arrived in New York for fashion week together.
They're attending shows together. And everyday this week they're sharing each other's high heels — more than 20 pair of size 8 designer shoes including Christian Louboutin, Manolo Blahnik, Alexander McQueen, Roger Vivier and Yves St. Laurent and more — giving new meaning to BFF, as in best feet forward.
While waiting with the fashionista throng on line on the first day of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week at the tents at Bryant Park for the David Elfin show (hated it, but loved the music!) the two buddies towered in style: both in five-inch high peep toe stilettos, Bologna, on the right in the above photo, in McQueen creations he accessorized with a Chanel 2.55 handbag; Blanco, on the left, in Louboutin and a Peter Nitz croc embossed clutch.
Make no mistake about it, Bologna and Blanco, attractive men, have no problem styling themselves in women's items, stepping out in designer heels, sleek handbags, super skinny stretch jeans and architectural jackets.
They aren't drag queens — their hair is styled in of-the-moment short dude looks. They don't wear make up or garish jewelry. And they each own about 70 pairs of men's shoes and a closet full of trendy men's outfits. But it's their heels they love and that stops traffic, first with amazement (and later with good hearted chuckles) at the notion that good looking men are in high heels in public — and unafraid by what others may think.
"We love wearing them and besides it's funny to other people and we like giving people something to smile about these days," says Bologna. "The heels make us look fantastic and gorgeous."
What do they look for in a great high heel? Hopefully what women look for, Blanco says. "It's about the fit and the feeling. When I see a great pair of shoes I fall in love with them and so I have to buy them."
More women must wear heels, he adds. "A woman has to because she's a woman and more important is that she will feel glamorous and powerful."
