HELENA BONHAM CARTER will star as Elizabeth Taylor in an upcoming BBC4 film drama, Burton and Taylor, focusing on the tempestuous relationship between the celebrated film actress and Richard Burton when they appeared together in Noel Coward play Private Lives in 1983. The Wire actor Dominic West will play the role of Burton.
"I look nothing like her for a start, but it's about capturing the essence of them at a particular time," said Bonham Carter. "Elizabeth was and continues to be a fascinating woman and she was a huge star. There's no one comparable around now."
Burton and Taylor met on the set of Cleopatra when they both had partners and married in 1964. They split up in 1974, only to remarry 16 months later.
Their second marriage was also short-lived, ending in divorce in 1976. Their appearances in Broadway stage show Private Lives was the first time that the couple had featured in a theatre production together and many had hoped that the event would cause them to reunite. The pair played a stormy couple who divorce following a brief marriage, but meet and reconcile years later when they both have new partners - a storyline that was widely thought to mirror the twosome's own love story.
Taylor and Burton never did remarry for a third time, but the pair remained close and Burton later adopted her two children Liza and Maria. Burton was quoted as saying once that: "Our love is so furious that we burn each other out. I love her, not for her breasts, her buttocks or her knees, but for her mind. It is inscrutable. She is like a poem."
"Elizabeth was 51 [when she took on the role in Private Lives], still every inch a star, still beautiful and they still needed each other but this was professional," Bonham Carter told The Daily Mail. "It's about this sliver of their lives together. They were huge stars and they'd never been on stage together before."
Burton and Taylor is expected to air in autumn 2013.
