INTERVIEW: HELENA CHRISTENSEN ON HER ACTING DEBUT 'ALLEGRO'
source: Boyd van Hoeij for europeanfilms.net
30/09/05
Born on Christmas day in 1968 to a Danish father and a Peruvian mother, Helena Christensen first grabbed headlines in 1986 when she was one of the contestants of the Miss Denmark election. She did not win but nevertheless quickly became Denmark’s most famous beauty through her modelling work for the likes of Versace, Chanel, Dior and Victoria’s Secret. Often seen on the runways of the fashion capitals of the world, in countless magazine spreads and the unforgettable black-and-white Chris Isaak video ‘Wicked Game’, Christensen has slowed down her modelling career to take up her interest in photography and is now an accomplished photographer herself, having shot, amongst others, a campaign for the Danish lager Carlsberg.
We met the statuesque beauty at the Venice Film Festival, where she presented ‘Allegro’, the second feature from Danish filmmaking wunderkind Christoffer Boe (Reconstruction). In the contemporary sci-fi film Christensen plays the object of affection of the pianist Zetterström (played by Ulrich Thomsen), who has such grave problems in communicating his love for her, that his memories of her becomes entrapped in ‘The Zone’, a hermetically locked section of Copenhagen. Zetterström returns to Copenhagen after more than ten years to try and find his lost memories again. Boe's ‘Allegro’ is Christensen's feature film debut as an actress.
On how the collaboration between the two came about, Helena is swift to answer: “I received a letter from Christoffer in which he explained he would be interested in working with me. He asked if I wanted to explore my possibilities as an actress through some screen tests. I was rather surprised and also honoured, because I had never done any serious acting before, but I decided that it was a chance that I should take, especially because Boe is clearly a very talented filmmaker”. On the subject of her collaboration with the director, Helena humbly says: “It was really important for me to be sure that he was completely honest with me. This was all very new to me and I did not want to ruin his film! So we worked hard on that basis of confidence that is needed to collaborate comfortably”.
Asked about the differences between modelling and acting, the budding actress smiles knowingly; “When you are modelling, you are creating a picture, a still life, perhaps something like a silent film. You convey emotion but you are only using your body and nothing else. Of course this knowledge is useful for an actress and for me it sort of became the skeleton on which to construct the rest of my acting experience. When on the set of a film, you have to play natural for entire scenes in a very unnatural environment. You have to express emotions and interact with other actors and also use your voice. It is a very different experience, also because the whole process of doing several takes, close-ups and long shots of the same moment is new to me”.
Boe’s unique visual style, which has become instantly recognisable even after just two films, really appealed to Helena as a photographer. “I am very much aware of the visual side of things because I do a lot of photography. I often take Polaroids of things that I see around me and strike me as visually interesting, just to remember them and perhaps use later. I even do this when I am watching films and there are particular images that I like. In fact, for me, ‘Allegro’ is composed of a series of still life photographs that has been put to speed. There is so much care that has gone into the composition of the cinematography”.
Christensen has clearly put just as much care in her first role as an actress and is likely to convince many other directors to work with her after they have seen her work on this first film. ‘Allegro’ comes out today [Friday] in Denmark, courtesy of SF Film.
