This is probably the wrong place to put this but im kind of in a pickle.
I'm going to ny in february and I just wanted to know if anyone could tell me what kind of weather it will be and what would be suitable clothing to take as I have no idea.
I have the basic jumpers, coats, and some okish boots but otherwise i'm lacking in clothes for really cold weather.
If anyone could offer any advice that'd be great.

Most important: comfortable shoes. I can't emphasize that enough. The first time I visited New York, as a teenager, I sprained the longitudinal ligament of my foot, and had to hobble about. Bring several different pairs of comfortable shoes. And bandages. You'll walk miles in New York, and not even notice, because there's so many interesting things to see and do. But if your feet hurt, you'll be miserable.

Otherwise, New York isn't really all that cold, not like, for example, Chicago or Minneapolis. Still, if you're concerned about staying warm, layer clothes: camisole, turtleneck, jumper (sweater), coat. Also bring a hat, scarf, and gloves. You lose a tremendous amount of heat through your head, which is why a hat (or, at the very least, earmuffs) is critical.

Have fun! New York is a great city!

i'm going tomorrow. having lived there for 15 yrs, i think i can safely say that when the wind whips thru those concrete and steel canyons, ny can be the coldest city on earth! bring all the above - good walking shoes/boots. (snow melts into icky puddles and boots you can tuck jeans into are crucial) LAYER - thin to thick and a good, warm coat is essential, plus hat, scarf, gloves. keep in mind that all interiors are heated so make it easy on yrself removing outer layers. (cashmere is great, bulky sweaters not so) if you are prepared for the worst, weather-wise, you'll have a great time. if not, most of yr time will be spent trying to get a cab and/or indoors. have fun! ny is the best!

p.s. tights under jeans are a good idea and i always put a thin leather jacket on under my coat - nothing seems to break that wind like leather!

Ahhh... It's been like 60 degrees almost every day.

Anyway, to the original poster, my advice is to check the weather forecast, really.

so i hear! but ny weather is so fickle i always prepare for the worst! lol

we've had an insane winter. very weird. it's been much warmer than usual and much drier. but it can be 5 degrees with a windchill of 10 below if it wants to. so pack layers and at the absolute worst, you can always buy a pair of shoes.

Visit weather.com before you go! February in NYC can be nice, or it can be very cold.

Whatever you do, make sure you bring shoes you're comfortable walking in. Oh, and you might want to leave that long winter-white coat at home if you're planning on doing a lot of walking or taking the subway--nyc can get very dirty, especially right after it rains or snows!

Thanks so much for all the help you guys,I've got some flat leather boots so I should be fine in all the puddles ,but I'm probably gonna have to chose practicality over style and go with some kind of puffer jacket.
I will definately be buying a hat.
And if when I get there if the weather is completely wrong for my clothes it'll be a great reason to go shopping.
;)
