Hilary Rhoda

GENLUX FALL 2009

Text:

I’m on my way to the photo studio in a really filthy cab,
trying hard not to touch anything, when suddenly, I’m captivated
by the piercing blue eyes belonging to the model in the Estée
Lauder cosmetics commercial showing on the cab’s five-inch
monitor. The model is Hilary Rhoda, who also just happens to be
the subject of our shoot for Genlux magazine. Here, in the place
you’d least expect to see this expensive ad technology, is her new
TV spot. This must be a sign, right? A tipping point for Genlux. How
could it not be? We have one of the most exciting photographers,
Marc Baptiste, shooting one of the top supermodels in the world,
and now, I’ve just seen a vision of her from the back of a New York
City cab.

The brushed aluminum elevator door to Sun West Studios opens,
and I see that Rhoda has beaten me to the set and is already in
the makeup chair. Physically stunning, she is often compared
to Brooke Shields, but their similarities don’t end there. Like Teri
Shields, who guided her daughter Brooke’s career, Marianne
Rhoda, Hilary’s mom, is replicating that “model.” But don’t even
think about calling her a “stage mother”—as a former IBM market-
ing exec, Marianne is well-equipped for this job, and the woman’s
all business. And what does Hilary think of this dynamic? “Being
my manager she has my best interests at heart, and she is the per-
son who knows me the most. She has traveled with me since I
started in this business, and it’s nice to have someone you love with
you and supporting you. It puts me more at ease.”
Ever since Nicolas Ghesquière personally picked her for the
Balenciaga Spring 2006 show, Rhoda has been on a remarkable
rise to the top. Impressively, since signing with IMG Models only
four years ago, she’s appeared in ads for Balenciaga, Belstaff,
Blumarine, Dolce & Gabbana, Dsquared, Gap, Givenchy, Gucci,
Donna Karan, Ralph Lauren, and Valentino. All coveted cam-
paigns. She’s also been on the career-making covers of American
Vogue, Vogue Italia, Paris Vogue, British Harper’s Bazaar, Time, Numéro,
and W. Model life doesn’t get much more exciting than this. “It’s
definitely all very exciting, but it is balanced by hard work. It’s great
to be able to meet such creative and interesting people and see
some of the most beautiful parts of the world.”
Born 22 years ago in Chevy Chase, Maryland, Rhoda admits that
she wasn’t always the stunner she is today. “I needed braces growing
up, and I went through a major awkward phase in middle school.”
She also admits that insecurities, even for a bona fide supermodel,
do creep in. “It’s very easy to be insecure about your looks because
everything in modeling is about the surface…the appearance.”
As one of the fashion scene’s brightest new icons, Rhoda is
particularly conscientious of her sense of style. “I’ve always heard
women dress for other women, but I’m not sure if I dress for
anyone other than myself. It depends. If I’m going to a fashion
event I will want to impress the fashionistas who are constantly
eyeing me.”

And whom does she count as her favorite designer? “I don’t have
just one favorite designer; it all depends on my mood. Sometimes
I like the uptown sophistication of Calvin Klein, while other times
it’s the downtown grittiness and edge of an Alexander Wang. I’m a
big fan of many of the emerging designers and feel Jason Wu has
a very bright future!”
Rhoda is also diligent about self-improvement. “I work out
with a trainer most days of the week, but when I’m traveling
I use hotel gyms. It’s important to get a good sweat every day,
and most of the things you’re eating should be healthy. I grew
up with an athletic background, so exercise to me is fun!”
Fun? Well, okay. And her beauty regimen? “I moisturize my skin
and let it breathe whenever possible. I don’t wear a lot of makeup
when I’m not working or out and about, but when I do, I make sure
to take it off before I go to bed. I make sure to drink lots of
water too!” When the Japanese start producing those lifelike
fembots that we’ve all seen on YouTube, wouldn’t they be smart to
use one of these as their model?

Rhoda is all smiles as she jets her slender 5’ 11” frame out of the
makeup chair and out in front of Marc Baptiste’s anxious lens. She
centers herself on the light gray seamless paper, shakes out her
voluminous locks, angles her hip, throws Baptiste an insouciant
smile, and stares down the barrel of his camera with “Those eyes!”
exclaims Baptiste. “Rhoda’s eyes are like your favorite song that
you can’t help but move to.” He shoots and screams with delight
at what he’s seeing through his viewfinder, “Rhoda! Right there,
baby! Love! Genius! Love that!”

In 2007, Vogue stamped its seal of approval on Rhoda when it
included her on its Steven Meisel–photographed cover showcas-
ing the world’s next top supermodels, and last year, Forbes listed
her as one of the world’s top-earning models, with an annual
paycheck of more than $2 million. Yes, she’s beautiful, skinny, and
rich. Naturally, she also gives her time and money to charity as a
supporter of New Yorkers for Children and Free Arts, both in New
York City. Could Hilary Rhoda possibly have any complaints? “My
derrière, but it’s a work in progress!”

And part two of same (as there were more than 10 pages! :))

I can't believe she's unhappy with her butt. Her butt is perfect! She must be saying that so I don't feel so terrible about myself, after all, there's nothing worse than someone rubbing your insecurities in your face by announcing that they're awesome and they know it :innocent:
