How do you know English?

I am surprised by how many members here know English and have amazing grammar! (Good job, guys!)

English is my first language.

Do you all study it in school? Is it a requirement?
Your second, third, even fourth language?
Or, do you cheat and use a translator online?

We speak it, well, everywhere. But my mother will cuss in Korean sometimes.

second language. I remember not wanting to learn it as a kid. but once I reached puberty, movies, music, books, magazines, tv and most importantly, internet.. they all sucked me in.. I was too desperate to fully understand the things I was attracted to and before I knew it, I was.. fluent.

We have it in school from the 2nd grade. English is my second language and it comes quite easy to me actually. But I still want to learn more complicated words and grammar.

In the 8th-9th grade, if you don't pass the english class you don't pass school. Therefore you must go to school in the summer to work the grade up to a G (the lowest here in Sweden). If you're in the 9th grade.. that really is bad, because if you don't pass school, you can't go to the gymnasium which is the next level.

My sister finished collage for english teacher so she was a great help for me becouse we often had conversations on english eaven when I was a little girl.
I think that my knowlegde is pretty ok but still have many things to learn.

English is my second language as well...My first contact with English was on holiday in Spain at the age of eight ordering icecream....but the real understanding of English came when I bought my first Spice Girls cd at the age of 9 or something which included a little booklet with the lyrics From age 11 to 18 I was taught English in school but I dare say that I never really needed that to develop my 'skills'. I got them mostly through music, movies, internet and talking it on holidays!

as sill said, english is compulsory in swedish schools. most kids study it from the age of nine, although some might take it from the age of ten. when you're twelve you get to choose from french, german or spanish as a third language. I studied french for five years and can only order a beer, so the key to knowing english so well is the fact that all foreign langauge programs on tv here have subtitles, only childrens movies and tv programs are dubbed... and of course music, books, magazines etc, the cultural influence is huge.
this makes a lot of swedes think they're practically native speakers, although they are faaar from.

I learnt it at school starting at age 10/11 and couldn't get enough of it.

I loved and still love that language, because of its rythmn and "musicality" and also because I was dreaming of the American dream.

Everything coming from the States was cool imo and I really thought that I would end up living across the Atlantic.

My passion for Madonna's "True Blue" record at the time was very helpful too in my learning and understanding of the language!

my first language is german. but i've been learning english since i was....6 i think i always liked it. i remember, the first time i attended the english-class in primary school i only talked english at home
i guess i was really annoying my parents.
i also speak french and a bit spanish .. but i'd love to learn some nordic-language!
