How do you organize your closet?

oh my goodness gracious !

i can't write about my closet...............it's not very well endowed!!

I cant either
I will always hear about other peoples!

Wow, you're so organized, Leyla. :ninja: The folding looks good to me. I will sit and fold my sweaters until they are just right.

My closet room is pretty boring. It's a small room, nothing big. It's painted light gray w/glass shelves from Ikea serving as places to put my sweaters, tees, and polos. I liked the glass shelves because it makes my clothes look like they are floating, you can't see them and it is very minimal. I don't like chests and huge built-in elaborate wall coverings. I never clear out anything. I keep everything year round. I don't think anything I have is season specific.

When you first come in, to your left, is my glass shelf wall. They are about 8 feet long each. On the bottom shelf are my polos and tees. Second shelf are my crewneck sweaters and cardigans. Third shelf are my turtlenecks. I have enough for them to have their own shelf. Fourth shelf are my thicker sweaters and shawls. Not that I have that many items, but I like them spaced out.

Then on the next wall are my hanging items which are on these chrome and black racks I bought at Bed Bath & Beyond. They are only like $30.00 I think. On them are just my trousers, blazers, shirts and dresses. All grouped by color, which is mainly just black and white.

Next wall my dark gray cabinet, about 5 ft tall, that holds all my accessories and has a white orchid plant on top with a black and white picture of my bf walking my dog. It looks like it belongs in an office. Then a black bench, over the bench is a painting a girl did for me called 'Gorillas in the Mist'. It's very abstract, textured and extremely beautiful. It's almost all white with charcoal, yellow and gray touches.

Then on the last wall, the one that meets the door, is a steel bookshelf that my uncle made me filled with my shoes and bags. It's not as detailed as Leyla's, but I don't have as many cool shoes and bags as she does. :P

:o  wow, Astrid!

it's a ROOM! with a bench and paintings and everything. :o sounds lovely.
Maybe I could live in your closet

Oh Leyla & Astrid, what amazing closets.

I won't even mention my disaster, but now I know why I can never find anything.

Astrid~ I love your closet/room it sounds like a mini boutique =)

Leyla~ what a great idea! I love how organized your items are, I never thought of polaroids... that's a great idea! I do have my bags in their felt bags, but I always have to take them down to see what's inside.

hmm... I need to reorganize my closet soon!

a guide to Sean's closet......

firstly you need to cross my bedroom floor...........although this migh sound like a simple task.....i must warn you......beware of c'd, magazines, clothes, underwear and anything else which may just be lying around on the floor. :important: ok you've been warned

secondly.....open the door of my wardrobe.....there are about 20 shirts....10 jackets.....10 pairs of trousers or so......lots of different record bags.....and hidden things i dont want people to find :ninja:

lastly.....pass accross to my chest of draws where you find underwear....(not all mine) :ninja:
about a GAZILLION t-shirts.....6 or 7 pairs of jeans.....sportswear.......nightware.....and everything else.....

jewellery and watches are located on top of the drawers......also any cosmetics and pills can be found there too......

over the weekend I reorganised (and "re-prioritised") my closet since I've been away for so long. it was such a mess. it's quite a smallish closet, but somehow I've managed to make everything fit - fairly neatly in my mind...though when I think about, it no matter what I do it will always appear, to the outsider, to be a perfect picture of chaos.

on the floor
- I have a rather large plastic chest of drawers, and I keep all of my flip-flops, flats, and trainers.
- on the floor are my "nicer" shoes...i.e. boots, heels, ice skates and dance shoes.

on the racks
- taking up half of the rail, from left to right my clothes are catagorised by item and colour: coats, dresses, short jackets and blazers, blouses, dressy tops.
- then there are my skirts, which take up the full other half of the rail, with over forty some-odd skirts catagorised by colour, style and length. (printed/peasant skirts all together, pleats, full-length, formal, and so forth) they're ehm...a bit squished...

on the shelf
- all of my handbags, lined up in no particular order.
- my hats, arranged as neatly as space allows.
- two large white boxes, full of books, magazines and childhood mementos. two porcelain dolls are randomly perched atop them.

on the door
- I have hooks attached to the doors, from which hang many of my belts, shawls and handbags with long, thin straps.

I dont have a closet
I have 8 hanger on wheels, like the ones from fashion shows, that you can move wherever u want. I have them on the back of my room, clothes are all mixed, exept my blacks, they are all organized. ...they have this small and fragile shelf on top, for sweaters, and clothes I hardly use.
On the floor, all the boxes with its shoes. I have like 30 pair of shoes. I have one hanger full of belts, one with ties, and one shelf with boxes, that keeps my wristlets, portfolios, and my two briefcases. I have big plans to organize my closet.

I have 8 of these

Great thread Jules! Thanks!
I love that you have so many skirts Utopia :woot: , I really need to buy more skirts as well
The closet at my parents' house is about 10 years old and made out of white melamine. It's totally falling apart and hideous :innocent: I keep all my old clothes that I hardly ever wear there, and now it's summer, my collection of really warm sweaters.
On the floor of the closet are some old shoes. Then there are a couple of drawers that I can hardly open for fear of the fronts falling off. They have underwear, socks, belts and tights in them.
Then, in my own room, there's this closet that isn't mine but has to stay in my room. It has all my books, plates and mugs in it, and on the bottom are two little closte spaces that have doors. This, ladies and gentlemen, is where I miraculously keep all my clothes. Open the right door and on the top shelf you'll find my pyjama collection. Next to it is a pile of shirts and tops. On the bottom shelf, there are my tshirts and next to that some trousers. From the upper shelf hangs a little drawer type thing that contains underwear.
Behind the left door hide (on top shelf) two piles of tops, and below some more pants and skirts. Then there's the twin of the underwear 'drawer' for my socks and tights. There are a couple of hangers from the side of the closet on which are some blazers and crinkle-prone pieces.
In a bigger drawer in another closet are some sweaters, and my shoes are lined up below that closet. I'm gonna move soon (the house I live in now is a temporary solution) and then I'll have more space to treat my clothes with more respect.

In Dutch ELLE, there used to be an article about somebody's closet every week (designers, a woman who was head of the fashion dept. of a museum, stylists etc.) , with pictures and an interview with that person about her personal style. That article was my favorite part of the mag every month :flower:

Shoes divided in 4 categories:

Boots - long boots and ankle boots, left part of the closet´s floor.

Sneakers - middle since I only own like seven pairs.

Open Toed Shoes (Stilettos, High Heels, Wedges, Sandals, Flip-flops) - (I don´t like to wear open toed shoes to work) - right part of the closet´s floor.

Shoes - in my vanity case floor.

Closet is a wall to wall.

Left Part

Everything that goes on top. From left to right, coats to sleeveless T shirts, assorted by type and secondly by color. I also has this weird idea that sometimes I pick a brand that I like very much like Moschino and group all Moschino tops together, then place them at the right. Then, a belt´s hanger.

Middle Part

Drawer, In one bras and in the other panties. On top of it, beauty products for Hair/Skin/Face/Nails.

Right Part

From left to right...
Clothes that I wear to work, mostly suits, pants and skirts.
Then, clothes that I´d never wear to work like club dresses, then some evening gowns, then some casual skirts and pants, and finally, jeans.

Handbags, in one hanger apart from the closet, not in their dustbag unfortunately.

Accesories all over the vanity drawer in cases.

And I forgot, parfums that I´m currently using, all over the vanity drawer.

Mine is a triple-fronted one with mirror doors so I can check an outfit from every angle.
One side currently has coats, though there are more coats & jackets in the hall.
The other has dresses, trousers, skirts & some tops.
Shoes & boots on floor of it

One chest of drawers -
Top - bra's & knickers
2nd - tights & stockings
3rd - socks
4th - not everyday underwear

Other chest of drawers -
Top - casual t-shirts/tops
2nd - work t-shirts/tops
3rd - better t-shirts/tops that don't crease

Storage boxes for bags, scarves, belts etc.
Pine chest for 'misselaneous items'

......and I also keep a number of outfits at my boyfriend's house which I swap between both places

Great Closets!!

I have two closets all to my own! :D

In my main one... MY hangers are all natural wood, I have it divided by seasons, spring/summer in one side... fall/winter in the other, and they change side depending on the current season... I have two shelves on top. Top most shelf is for storage of hats, Holloween goodies and other infrequently used things. Lower shelf has all my bags on the far side and folded PJs and workout clothes are on the other side. Finally on the botton I have LONG shoe rack with all my every day shoes.

In my dressing room I have my coat closet, which contains all my coats and cardigans

And in my living room, I have my shoe table... LOL! I pay quite a bit of $$$ for my shoes, so they might as well be decor! ;D

Here is a not so recent picture of the shoe table... currently there are strappier sandals on there... ;D

Dont they come really handy??
I need to change them, cause I get this model attitude, and I start leaving clothes everywhere, and they tend to look messy and sometimes empty, cause all the clothes are over the sofa and my bed

here is just a preview of my new closet... :woot:
i am not done sorting the clothes yet
