How do you organize your closet?

i still want to take everything out of my walk in and put it all back again...
thinking about how to organize it before i make a giant mess...
have some ideas...
just narrowing it down now...

Organize by occasion.
Hanging all your dresses together, shirts together, pants together, and so on, just does not work anymore. Rather than do this, organize areas for your work clothes, sporty clothes, and special occasion wear. If you have the space, hang some of the less used clothing, like party dresses, in another closet of your home so it doesn't get in the way of the day-to-day.

i've started making the mess now...
pulling everything out- washing/ sorting/ repairing where necessary...
also pulled stuff out of storage and am sorting that and integrating it into the existing stuff...

i've decided to organize it by "story"///
so far i have three stories-

cruel summer...

i'm not afraid of the dark...:ninja:

la boheme...:zorro:

:D what a great idea softgrey. i love that idea. i'd do school marm, goth, 90s cool, etc...

sadly, i just don't have the space in my walk in to do that. i have two separate double hanging sections and then one full length one, with some shelves and drawers in the middle. so i kind of have to do all my longer items - dresses, long skirts, long jackets/capey-things, etc - in the full length section. i divide the others by tops, skirts/pants, and jackets. with sweaters in the middle, work out clothes, etc. then i have a dresser for more things.

nothing in storage anymore... i purged when we bought our place 2.5 years ago. but now my closet is cramped again. :( i need a whole dressing room. i'd LOVE that.

i feel like i get stuck in a rut, wearing the same things, because i can't see everything i have. i know have that teal zip acne skirt back there somewhere. sigh...

^sounds like you have a pretty good set up...
*i'm having the same dilemma with all the long stuff...the knits are also an issue...
i don't want to hang them and wreck them
and then there are all the accessories...
hats, scarves, shoes, jewelry, belts...

i live alone so i can do whatever i want and part of me wants to take all the books (well, magazines really) off my bookshelves and put them in the closet and put all of my sweaters and shoes and accessories on the bookshelves!
with the hanging stuff on rolling racks...
basically- the entire loft becomes one giant walk in...
to fulfill my dream of living inside my own boutique...

the main thing that stops me is i imagine my parents coming over and having a nervous breakdown because it is the literal opposite of what they (and most of society) call "normal"...
:ermm:...

plus- all those magazines are really freaking heavy!
...

still haven't ruled it out though...
taking it one step at a time...
the cleaning process is still underway...

i think the 4th category has a name now...

dancing disco dolly...:magic:

:woot:...^_^...:buzz:

but it could still change...
anything can happen at this point...
it's all in flux...

:innocent:

just google bananarama...
or thompson twins...vintage westwood...
:P

it's the most defined category, actually...
all red and chambray and navy and white and beige...
stripes and polka dots...eyelet...
with flats, espadrilles and straw accessories...
it's the "sweetest" part of my persona...

:blush::P:D

especially for the accessories...
having everything in boxes and drawers just doesn't cut it!

who has heard of the "konmari" method...
by marie kondo...
author of this best-selling book about tidying up...?
only keep items that spark joy...
https://play.google.com/store/books...US&gclid=CPH7j_qu08oCFU5ENwodCL0HLg&gclsrc=ds
This #1 New York Times best-selling guide to decluttering your home from Japanese cleaning consultant Marie Kondo takes readers step-by-step through her revolutionary KonMari Method for simplifying, organizing, and storing.
looks like it's taking over the world...~~~!!!

seems to me that runner could have penned this book, to some extent...
he taught me years ago that i should only have items that "make my heart leap"...

^_^......:P

since i am naturally and professionally an editor, i guess i need the advanced version of the method...
...

but a lot of what she espouses are what i have been saying all along when people ask for my advice...
that whole-"if you haven't worn it in a year, throw it out" rule is complete bullsh*t...
if you love it and it makes you happy- keep it forever...

I outgrew my tower of 30 (10 x 3) clear shoe drawers--I use the men's/athletic ones from Container Store, which have plenty of room for a chunky heel or a bootie. So over a couple trips I added another tower of 10, which should give me plenty of room. I am also buying a nice skirt/slacks hanger every time I go in there, so eventually I'll replace all my plastic ones.

Softie I did the Konmari thing last fall. Got rid of I think 75% of all my belongings. Now I have very, very very few clothes but I LOVE it. I used to be perennially rather messy. Now my home is always neat and lovely and fresh. She's not kidding when she says it's once-and-for-all.

yes sometimes there should be such stuff as good fertilizer.
no matter how ordered it may appear, it is just another form of disorder if it doesn't correspond to our internal order which consists less of the rational/efficient than of the superfluous.

^^
that is sooo true...
it is why i cannot stand to have anyone else clean or organize my stuff...
(even when i was a kid)
i need it all organized in a way that makes sense in MY mind, not necessarily in anyone else's...
^_^

Mel- did you do it for your whole house?
she recommends starting with your wardrobe...

i think i am going to start with my socks...
*talk about starting small...

...:ninja:......

* it doesn't seem to be about getting rid of everything and just living with as little as possible...
i have never really seen the point of that...
it seems to be more about living only with things that make you happy and bring you joy...
that is an idea i can get behind...
i have always believed that i would rather have nothing than have something that i didn't love...
consequently- i really love pretty much everything i have---
(except my freaking couch~!
i need thousands of dollars in order to reupholster a vintage one that i love...)

disclaimer- i didn't read the book, i just saw her on a NYTimes talk video...
