How to deal when others disapprove?

I think it depends on the family. Some ask because they are jealous or want to bring you down a notch, don't agree with spending money on clothes, others because they care.

he said, "don't protest on the spot, protest devoting your whole life (if it's really related to your style)".

MY mum turned around and said my daughter knows more facts about fashion etc. then the ammount of facts you would need to know for a law or medicine degree etc. She has an amaizing head for facts, something which i admire her so much for, fashion is ever changing, law etc. very rarely changes. Also style is something you cant learn, and i like to nurture my childrens talents, like you encorage your children to play and instroment or lanuages etc.

and then they never ever mentioned it again

an other time an other one of her friends commited on it.. my mother just turned around and said .... she feels sorry for the sales assistant she loves to give them the commission.. that also shut her friend up lol

an other time an other family friend.. who just so happens to be a hopeless snob, she has some title in her name and probally thinks of ehr self as "upper class" mentioned it and my mother turned around and said .. dicussing money etc. very lower middle class dont you think ??... this poor woman was mortified lol i think that was the bigest insult my mum could have given her lol

Very good points. Unfortunately all family members don't always have your best interests in mind. My sister and mother have had to actually encourage me to spend more, because they tell me I can afford it.

Depends who's asking. Sometimes I tell the truth, usually I just shrug it off. It bothers me, though, when somebody says "well, I'm not rich, I can't afford it" because neither am I and it's a question of priorities (not talking about clothes here). I avoid asking how much things cost because that information gives me absolutely nothing and usually you can pretty much tell the price by the cut and make

My friends ask me questions like that all the time and I can not stand it. Most of them have jobs, while I get money from my parents. I told a close friend how much allowance I recieved about a year ago, and now they all know! I thought it was incredibly rude of her to tell others! I now recieve significantly more money than I did last year which makes things worse. They alway say "Well your parents give you $___ !" when in reality it's a lot more.

I find it EXTREMELY offensive because I live in a very small house, my parents drive very small cars, and have a rather minimalist lifestyle relative to all my friends. Most people I know seem to have a ton of video games (I have none), DVDS (I have 3, all gifts), guitars they spend a ton, crusises and so many other things that I would never even think of spending money on. I can honestly say not one of my friends, or friend's parents don't own an SUV! I know we all spend money differently, but when it comes down to it they're consuming about 3 - 4 times as much as I do yet they percieve me as the extravagant one.

People ask me all the time, how much money i spend on bags, clothes, shoes, make up products, etc... I have a soft spot for expensive things, i know, but i work for my money. They don't mind that i spend my money. They mind that i spend my money this way. On FASHION.

OH MY GOD? Fashion? Only stupid, silly, airhead, shallow, uneducated, -500 IQ people talk/care about fashion.

Yes, that's everybody's opinion. I don't get it. Why? this is the most irritating thing.

^ Exactly. There's this guy I used to work with who spent hundreds and hundreds on CDs, concerts and other music-related stuff every month... Once I saw him in *rage* when he couldn't find a pair of black trousers under 25...!

I know someone exactly like this.
he spends a lot whenever its something music-related,
but once he seriously asked me why people buy leather bags.
he was like, (about high end stuff)

"why would you buy the real thing when you can get the fake one?
and why do you wanna spend money on LEATHER anyways.
whats so good about leather? "

i mean, i understand if people buy fakes because they cant afford the real thing or whatever, but.... what????
why do i like leather better than pleather????

But why? Why are we seen or fear being seen as stupid/vain/frivolous for spending money on clothes when people spend it on music, is it some sort of higher cause? If we are passionate about something how does it make us vain? Fashion can feed the soul just as much as music or more so, if you are passionate about it. I do not understand why this is viewed this way where as something like stampcollecting, which serves a far less utilitarian purpose, is seen as somehow better?!

In my opinion, you don't have to justify anything. I feel as though all people spend money --they just spend it on different things and we all have different priorities.
