What's going on? They don't have any advertisers anymore? Where is the fashion? Did I really see Freja with an empty box? Some burned or painted tops?

This is going on:

For the first time in our history, there are no new clothes in the fashion section of the magazine. We looked at the ways in which the fashion industry can continue to benefit from the philosophies and DNA of i-D’s early issues: getting back to craft and creativity; the use and re-use of treasured items through D-i-Y, recycling, and upcycling; through vintage and archive clothing; through charity shopping.

I love the layout in EARTHRISE I. Too bad it probably won't looks as good in print.

Earthrise I is delicious. Mario is on a roll lately: first the stunning surrealist editorial with Greta for Document and now this.
I'm sure that he never photographed Julia before but he brought the best out of her: she looks radiant and so confident. I was a little bit scared because her recent print work wasn't the best honestly but when she works with the right team... the difference can be huge.

And it's possible to do all of that without looking like you dumpster dive for a living, never brush your hair and don't even wear clothes most of the time. It's possible to repurpose things and look tailored and clean. You could look any which way you want, when you're in control of the clothing. Imagine the upcycled creations an indie magazine could bring us, if truly invested in the concept.

So these editorials seem to have a theme, but I don't know whether they're exploring this theme to any full potential.

Fashion editorials: when in doubt, use degrees of nudity and declare it meaningful.

This is one of those rare occasions in which I could have withstood i-D's signature multi-cover strategy, because not even Vittoria Ceretti by Mario Sorrenti is cutting it here. What a sorry sight for some summer covers!
