If I had a boyfriend, I would want something handmade or really thoughtful. Expensive isn't necessarily better. A well-written poem, story, or letter...a photograph, drawing, or some small hand-made something-or-other (depending on the person's particular skills)...a song that's written and performed for me or a mix cd of songs that are compiled for a special reason...combine any one of these with a bar of my favorite kind of chocolate (70% dark chocolate

or anything from lindt) or a letter/note and I am putty in your hands. An expensive piece of jewelry is nice, but it really is the thought that counts in this case. I think the real goal behind the gift is not just giving the actual item but rather showing the person that you love them/care about them and that they're important to you. That's just my take though.

If you can send that message with a more expensive gift and you want to, then go for it by all means.
That said, I don't actually have a boyfriend,

so it doesn't really matter what I would want. I hope that I gave you some ideas, though, in case your girlfriend never actually sees this page. If she doesn't reply with anything on this thread, listen very very carefully to what she says when you're with her and read her posts here on tfs to see if you can find something that she wants/would like. If you're really stuck, ask her friends (but make sure that they won't tell on you

). Good luck!
