Asian fashion in Uganda

what do Ugandans generally feel about their women taking on on a fashion that is so culturally foreign to their region?

A lot of Asians (Indians, Pakistanis, and Goans) settled in Uganda around 1920ies I think..despite Idi Amin coming into power in the 1970ies, making life especially difficult for the ugandan's of asian decent..I still think that Uganda has a large asian population..which might explain why asian fashion such as the sari / saree is popular. Urban feel free to correct me if I got it all wrong :flower:

true indian fashion has actually been gaining ground more as a trend. like how you'd have shredded jeans or fuffles...
many people wear the beaded tops casually or when going partying then the more formal sarees and punjab suits are suited for more formal events like dinners, weddings,...
the fabrics used and design are perfect for our extremely hot weather

@ hanne...true the asian population has also influenced the India trend as they have opned several shops

its a nice article Urban, your take on Indian styles is correct and i guess you give good guidance on how to wear the looks
but you should also write about those beaded tops

*india is also a mass 'high street' trend in Europe at the moment..
mass chains (see Zara etc) are hot on kaftans and indian style embroideries,
obviously inspired from moving mass market production in Asia..
colourwise the trend is expressed by bright orange, turquise and white monochroms, paisley prints, ethink beading and glitter/lurex detailing.

trend wise its been explained as a 'love for exoticism'.
since people dont have enough money to travel in exotic places.. adapting bits and pieces or borrowing from exotic styles in their everyday life seems enough to do the trick ;)

thanks for the positive feedback :flower: . i actually want to do a whole article on the beaded tops and tunics [for an online magazine i now write for www.kampalalive.com] since they are also catching on around here. These come from India, the middle east and also the orient if am not mistaken. have to snoop around to be able to write 700 words about tunics!!!

I would love to see some more links if anyone has them... ( those by Sabysachi Mukerjee posted by Snow White)
