PARIS-Inge Grognard’s career as a make-up artist started in the mid-eighties when she and her husband, photographer Ronald Stoops, collaborated with designers such as Martin Margiela and the Antwerp Six (Dries Van Noten, Ann Demeulemeester, Dirk Bikkembergs, Walter Van Beirendonck –W&LT, Dirk Van Saene, Marina Yee) –some of whom she still has the pleasure of working with. She also worked with newer Belgian designers such as, Raf Simons, Véronique Branquinho, Jurgi Persoons and Patrick Van Ommeslaeghe.

Inge has overseen make-up direction at a number of fashion shows –one being Christian Lacroix. Today, she continues to work on the following shows: Christian Wijnants, Bernard Wilhelm, A.F. Vandevorst, Marcel Marongiu, Rick Owens, Kenzo, Martin Margiela, Dirk Bikkembergs, De Fursac and Anne Valérie Hash.

Inge finds inspiration through her husband, her cats, trees, music and the arts in general. She is sensitive to her surroundings and studies the behavior of those who surround her. All of these elements are combined and projected in Inge’s work –especially the more personal projects that her and her husband dedicate a lot of their free time to. These works are often exhibited in museums or art galleries and allow for Inge to have a variance of outlets for her artistic drive.

In 1998, she published Make-Up in 500 copies. The book was well-received and distributed in Belgium, Paris, Rotterdam and Tokyo. As a result, a small retrospective on Make-Up appeared in Purple Magazine. Her desire to not limit make-up art to the fashion world alone is also demonstrated through her collaborations with the theatre. Inge lent her skill to a dance theatre play called Rain, directed by the infamous Anna Theresa de Keersmaeker.

Throughout her career, Inge has enjoyed working with a fine array of photographers: Nick Knight, Terry Richardson, Corinne Day, Juergen Teller, Jean-Baptiste Mondino, Jean-Paul Goude, Bettina Rheims, Tesh, Miles Aldridge, David Armstrong, Satoshi, Horst Diekgerdes, Katja Rahwles, Anouschka Blommers & Niels Shumm, Karen Collins, Paulo Sutch and Michel Momy.

Her work has appeared in magazines such as, Vogue (British, Italian and Japanese versions), i-D, Dazed & Confused, Purple, Self-Sevice, Numéro, Another Magazine, V and A Magazine.

Ad campaigns that she has worked on include: Chanel’s “Chance” perfume and Chanel’s Haute Gamme 5 Elements Jewelry line, Galérie Lafayette, Nina Ricci, Ungaro, Stella McCartney and Haider Ackermann

Furthermore, Inge’s talent can be seen in the music videos of Bjork (“Pagan Poetry”) and Marilyn Manson (“This is the New sh*t!”).

Inge lives with her husband and cats in Antwerp, Belgium and concentrates her activities between Antwerp and Paris

Hey thanks for those. I didn't even think about those when I was getting her profile. I have loads of images of her work pulled from i-D and Purple...and 4 HUGE posters from [the former] NºA curated by Dirk Van Saene. She inspires me so much. Another tidbit about her is that she's been close friends with Martin Margiela since they were high school.

Here's a couple more with her work with Jurgi I've got saved. It was like a slick gel look that reminded one if they were attacked by one of those aliens from the namesake movie. And it was the S/S 01 in which the girls were in those plexiglass eggs.

Another cool Jurgi...but from a look-book shoot of his A/W 99.

oh thanks for sharing, scott! i had read her name here and there but never knew exactly which looks were hers.

i love that there is something natural about her weirdest creations:heart:

also loved the pictures travolta and jennifer posted, thanks!

Thanks for saying that,Anna because that IS exactly how her work is always described.

From her book by journalist Peter De Potter:

Make-up, cover up, lighten up...hard face, stark face, lovely face.

Inner beauty, outer beauty, true beauty...innocence, innovation, interaction.

Experiment, experience, excitement...skin, bone, soul...girl, women, human.

Androgyny, anarchy, energy...strong looks, striking looks, real looks.

Self-expression, self-assurance, self-esteem...shades, colour, light.

Do it yourself, do it myself, do it from the heart.
Re-invention, re-discover, re-search...life, love, laughs...

'I've seen Inge Grognard at work, backstage at a fashion show, in her own studio, creating, concentrating, cracking jokes, and I think she knows quite something about all of the above...'

And thank you Space for the wonderful catwalk and backstage images. I think Inge is at her most dynamic when she's creating for Bernhard,MMM and Jurgi.
