Iris van Herpen Haute Couture S/S 2013 Paris

Well, some of the looks remind me her season's outfits bot overall I think this is a stunning collection- couture at its best. Some of them look unreal, especially the 5th look in post #1.

Having been associated with McQueen, she definitely has his less-than-conventional concept of beauty. There's a lot of McQueen here; the domed-shape dresses from his Plato's Atlantis and the Alien-esque exoskeleton design in the neckpieces are obvious McQueen properties. I wonder though, were these hers originally...?

Her pattern inspirations, which look like everything from the patterns on a abalone shell to the hairy markings and crystalline-spikes of a sea-slug, are lovely and otherworldly; the intricate embellishment is insanely wicked and beyond stunning. But aside from the McQuuen-esque Plato's Atlantis silhouettes (complete with his signature platforms), the other forms turn a woman into a sea-slug-- literally, which I don't find very flattering, but more costume. So in that sense, she's missing that vital element in her designs that makes McQueens' so brilliant; that he was able to take these otherworldly inspirations and combined with his daft tailoring, create beautiful forms on women. Iris isn't quite able to accomplish this delicate balance, it seems.

And I wonder: If she worked with Sarah Burton, how much potential there may actually be to resurrect what made McQueen so awesome: Sarah's tailoring skills combined with her unique embellishments... It's juts too bad she has no interest in working for the McQueen label anymore.

Some of these looks were made with a 3D printer! I just read an article about this collection in a design magazine and I immediately started to view her creations differently. She is truly an innovator!

Iris Van Herpen Uses 3-D Printing For The Win
Conceptual Dutch fashion designer Iris van Herpen—best known for her hyper-complex, sculptural wares—has won the top prize in the Dutch Design Awards’ fashion category. Her 3-D printed collection dubbed Voltage, which she showed in Paris last January, inspired the judges to award her the honor. “With Voltage, van Herpen gives the world a view into the future of fashion,” offered the festival’s jury. Looks like we have yet another indication that 3-D printing will play a significant role in the fashion industry of tomorrow—or even of today.
