One of my all-time favorite activities when I’m back at my family home in Toronto is flipping through old fashion magazines. Probably because my collection rivals that of most actual libraries and, unlike in my New York apartment, I have more than one teeny tiny bookshelf on which to store them. I’m also pretty pleased that after seven or so years of them sitting around and taking up space (sorry, parents!), my indignant refusals to throw even one of them out has paid off, since now I can bring you such glorious little time capsules as the below scan, taken from an issue of Nylon from the year 2000.
In the clipping, we learn 23-year-old January Jones and then-boyfriend Ashton Kutcher were once apparently referred to as “the next Tom & Nicole” by their agents and were shacked up in Los Angeles along with their four cats and dogs. The former Mrs. Don Draper also tells the magazine that she met Kutcher on the set of an Abercrombie & Fitch shoot three years earlier and that she hates when guys try to pick her up by calling her February.
Jones shares page space with a 15-year-old Mischa Barton, who at the time was filming Lost and Delirious, a 2001 drama in which she plays a boarding school student who’s put in a room with secret lesbian lovers Piper Perabo and Jessica Paré, a.k.a. the new Mrs. Don Draper on Mad Men (trivia!). That movie also happens to be based on my high school, so there you go.
