I'm reading this thread, and I am completely stunned by how unnessesarily mean some people can be. I am a Jennifer Lopez fan, and not because of her singing, acting, or designing talents, because I know she's not that good, but because of how hard she's worked to get to where she is. Being born into an under-privilaged family, a disadvantaged neighborhood, and working your way to international superstardom is NOT EASY. For that, I genuwinely respect the woman. She is an incredible source of inspiration for alot of girls, and even young women, that are growing up the same way she did, who are struggling the same way she has.
I watched the MTV documentary, and I'll admit that I didn't think the collection was really any good, and I was also dissipointed at how little work she did, so I will agree with you on that point. She is no where near Galliano's level, and I feel the same way you do. But what I can't agree with is how incredible snooty, over-critical, and evil some people were when voicing their opinoins. Everyone has the right to expression, but really, do you have to be SO MEAN about it? I'm not saying that as a Jennifer fan, cause I know and understand that she is more than lacking in the artistic department. I am only saying that as a human being. We dont have to be so mean or evil to one another. Thats part of the huge problem with the world.
I would also like to say something about the use of the word "ghetto." I have to say, as a black hispanic woman, because that's the angle that I am comming from, that it genuwinely offends me, as I am sure that it does most people like myself. I am not saying this to be over-sensitive, but I just hope that maybe you could think twice or a couple of times before you use it, and if you dont feel any differently after thinking about it, or what the word truely means, then by all mean, go ahead if you feel it's right. I just ask that you remember that it really represents a steryotype, one that is hurtful to some people.
Lastly, I have been a fan of fashion ever since I was given my first issue of ELLE (Jun. 2001), and since then I have garnered a genuwine passion for both ready to wear and couture. I know all of the designers, not only the obvious ones, and I love the collections of everyone from Jean Paul Gultier and Roberto Cavalli to Tom Ford (I Love Him!!!) and Donatella Versace. I love Rochas, Micheal Kors, LOVE the new Gucci collection for F/W 2005, Lanvin, and so on. I also have an incredible love for music, I've been a vocalist from five, and yes, I really can actually sing. If I am blessed enough to make it as a musician (which I am not pursuing), I would hate to think that I could never put out a collection simply because of it. And Visa-versa. If I had a high-fashion clothing collection, which I am persuing, I would be hurt to find that I could never release an album and never star in a movie, or pursue any other of my artistic passions, simply because I made it as a designer first, and that I could never be good at more than one thing. There are some people who are truely gifted (not at all talking about myself) and maybe we shouldn't be so hard on celebrities, because they are, ultimately, human beings first.
I just think that we could try and be a little more sensitive. If we dont like something, we dont have to be so mean about it. I hate the thought that fashion is loosing it's creativity, but I hate even more the snooty attitude that some people have about it. I dont think it should be for super-elite people, because I am not super-elite. Fashion is art. I think it should be seen and expierenced by everyone. If and when that happens, more people will have an understanding about it. You shouldn't be allowed access to it just because your rich, or come from an important family. It should be for everyone.
Thats just my humble opinion, any and everyone can disagree with it, if thats how they feel. I just felt compelled to say something.
