Jennifer Lopez F/W 05.06 New York

To be honest, some TFS'ers scare me a lot.. Why do you guys feel so offended by Sweetface collections? JLO never called herself a designer.. The collection only reflects her style, which I personally don't love, but as a guy, find somewhat sexy. This is a fully commercial show, you gotta understand that. I imagine myself preparing a collection like this one -which is not an easy task- and posting the pictures here.. Then what, are you going to boycott me?? Please remember there are thousands of people out there who buy these kind of collections. It's not cool to call people shallow just because they like shiny stuff. Fashion's supposed to be fun..

Fashion is an art. Not a business. When it becomes hugely commercial. It is no longer fashion. It is simply a business venture in bad taste.

For a celebrity to think she can become a fashion designer just because she is a celebrity, it's ridiculous. The thing that bothers me is that she thinks she is a real, sophisticated, fashion-icon. The truth is, however, she just has a lot of money. Money does not make anyone sophisticated, much to Missy Elliot's dismay (And J.Lo's of course), as hard as she may try.

This collection is in very bad taste. Although the prices may be high, which I am assuming but am not sure, the look is cheap. This collection, in my opinion, is done in very bad taste.

For me, just for me, personally (And maybe for some others) this is not fashion.

I'm not a fan of anything Lopez does except for Selena and her business acumen. Lopez readily admits "I'm not a designer." Countless interviews and the recent MTV program make this extremely apparent. She's more a whiny selector. She isn't someone that has a clear idea and delegates design and technique. Instead she has some sort of idea and really simply chooses among what her team can extract from that idea and bring to her.

None of this bugs me. There's far too much fashion to enjoy to let one or a few entrants spoil it.

What I do question is her taking the bow at the end of a trade show implying she is indeed the creative force behind this venture.

^That's another thing. Apparently, from what I hear, there are several young designers who worked on this. So, if she is the one who has probably done the least for this except publicize, why is she the one being praised? She's practically claiming it's all hers. I mean, except for interviews where she admits that she's not a designer and that there is a team behind all this, it's still all "by J.Lo". :yuk:

^ About taking the bow; JLO is a brand. And Sweetface is the clothing line of this brand name. This was her first show and people were there to see her. If they don't see her, they don't buy the stuff. If they don't buy the stuff, all those creative young people and 100's of people working behind this project have to look for someone else to work for. That could be Tom Ford, Ralph Lauren etc.. Maybe one day, one of those young, ambitious designers will have a chance to have their own line. So, JLO has to take the bow..

If a designer is a designer to follow trends, which is done to make money and grow as a company, that person is not a fashion designer. That person is a business man or woman with a tad bit of creativity, but nothing extraordinary. Real designers make beautiful things, plain and simple. That's alli'm trying to say and that explains my point of view. This, to me, is not fashion. These people behind this label, to me, are not real designers.

JLO is a business and that is the bottomline! Designers are Oscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrera, Nina Ricci, Gucci, Ralph Lauren, Michael Kors, Marc Jacobs....well I think u get the picture.

JLO is smart and very business savy and that is what we need to give her credit for. She is not a designer she is a very good business woman that sees an opportunity and makes it work!! I am huge fan of JLO, but her clothing line could use a little more help. The quality of the fabrics were on the low end and just the styles were not that OOlala! I do however give her kudos on her perfume line.

My thing is, if your not a designer why put out a clothing line! She kept saying it because she knew that if she bombed that was her way out. "I didnt design it."
She's a great business woman the show was aight but nothing new. If people think expensive= cute then they deserve to look like a fashion victim anyways cause thats all they are.

Very well said. ;)

I actually really like this collection. It's hip, urban fun and really JLO. I think she put a lot of effort into it. I don't think the prices are right for the quality though. I think Alot of you guys don't like it because she's another celebrity turned designer which is completely understandable. I hate when people use their fame to launch a clothing line, whe other people work their butts off their whole life just trying to make it as fashion designers. I think I just like the urban feel of the collection. Some of the collection could have been done better. But everone has their own opinion

I think MAYBE what bothers some people, or atleast what bothers me, is not so much this collection (some of the stuff was fun) but that its a sign of the times. Fashion week in new york is becoming more and more a celebrity show casing of their entrepreneurial talents. How does anyone break in when they have to compete with JLo, PDiddy, Beyonce, etc. They immediately attract media attention, but not for the fashion, that becomes a side point.

I feel that people can be more critical of a bad line coming out of a reputable house. Because it's not all about the celebrity, its about the clothes, and they know that by criticizing a lacklustre collection, there will be more effort in the next season. Also, that designers go through cycles as they try things out. With the celebrity "stylists" each fashion show is going to be merely a media circus, the clothes really comse second. There's really no point criticizing them too much, because the celebrity can always decide "oh well, maybe i'll try something else in stead". This doesn't mean they have a fear of celebrities leaving fashion but that really, whatever fashion critiques/public says will have little effect on a celebrity's ability to make appropriate changes or redirections. There is no accountability for the collection. But because they draw so much attention, atleast at fashion shows, other designers are going to start to get pushed out. Maybe not the big houses, but smaller houses certainly. Small houses with very interesting creative ideas to seel, but who don't have the celebrity status to compete with a movie/music star for a fashion show slot. Fashion show organizers know that even if the collection is horrible, people will come, and come back the next year, because it's like voyeurism. A peak into a celeb's mind.

It's sort of sad, but it's also unavoidable. I like it better when a celebrity is a muse for a designer. The designer can concentrate 100% on designing, and learning from mistakes, and learning from experience. A celebrity won't be doing that, and her employees who are designing the clothes won't feel the personal drive that a designer feels whos name is on his/her clothes (or when they are acknowledged, like knowing that a certain person is the designer for a certain house).

It's going to become sort of like watching the Olympics with celebrities as the athletes, people who have no athletic training, but do exercise to keep in shape). People will come out, and the media will come out because, well, they are celebrities, look at the tabloids, people pay money to look at celebrities. But it will have lost something that is there when a person's neck and reputation is on the line each and everytime they put out a collection.

Wait til I come out with my fashion line, it's gonna be called "Shitface"

I couldn't believe how much fur she had in her fall collection! She really disgusts me, now some brainwashed JLo following freaks are going to think fur is the hottest thing around, it all makes me sick. The woman is a monster!!! She doesn't give any of her fortune away to charities, or barely any, she is one greedy lady. I would never buy anything that has her name on it, her name stands for everything that is evil in my mind.

Funny way of looking at it!.. I love your posts :flower:

Some pieces were close to being "alright". the rest was horrible IMO. This collection was aimed for celebs but lately only JLO wore pieces from this collection (lol). Even lil' kim avoided wearing her stuff. Lets see what she will bring out for SS06. I'm not hopeful though.

I'm reading this thread, and I am completely stunned by how unnessesarily mean some people can be. I am a Jennifer Lopez fan, and not because of her singing, acting, or designing talents, because I know she's not that good, but because of how hard she's worked to get to where she is. Being born into an under-privilaged family, a disadvantaged neighborhood, and working your way to international superstardom is NOT EASY. For that, I genuwinely respect the woman. She is an incredible source of inspiration for alot of girls, and even young women, that are growing up the same way she did, who are struggling the same way she has.

I watched the MTV documentary, and I'll admit that I didn't think the collection was really any good, and I was also dissipointed at how little work she did, so I will agree with you on that point. She is no where near Galliano's level, and I feel the same way you do. But what I can't agree with is how incredible snooty, over-critical, and evil some people were when voicing their opinoins. Everyone has the right to expression, but really, do you have to be SO MEAN about it? I'm not saying that as a Jennifer fan, cause I know and understand that she is more than lacking in the artistic department. I am only saying that as a human being. We dont have to be so mean or evil to one another. Thats part of the huge problem with the world.

I would also like to say something about the use of the word "ghetto." I have to say, as a black hispanic woman, because that's the angle that I am comming from, that it genuwinely offends me, as I am sure that it does most people like myself. I am not saying this to be over-sensitive, but I just hope that maybe you could think twice or a couple of times before you use it, and if you dont feel any differently after thinking about it, or what the word truely means, then by all mean, go ahead if you feel it's right. I just ask that you remember that it really represents a steryotype, one that is hurtful to some people.

Lastly, I have been a fan of fashion ever since I was given my first issue of ELLE (Jun. 2001), and since then I have garnered a genuwine passion for both ready to wear and couture. I know all of the designers, not only the obvious ones, and I love the collections of everyone from Jean Paul Gultier and Roberto Cavalli to Tom Ford (I Love Him!!!) and Donatella Versace. I love Rochas, Micheal Kors, LOVE the new Gucci collection for F/W 2005, Lanvin, and so on. I also have an incredible love for music, I've been a vocalist from five, and yes, I really can actually sing. If I am blessed enough to make it as a musician (which I am not pursuing), I would hate to think that I could never put out a collection simply because of it. And Visa-versa. If I had a high-fashion clothing collection, which I am persuing, I would be hurt to find that I could never release an album and never star in a movie, or pursue any other of my artistic passions, simply because I made it as a designer first, and that I could never be good at more than one thing. There are some people who are truely gifted (not at all talking about myself) and maybe we shouldn't be so hard on celebrities, because they are, ultimately, human beings first.

I just think that we could try and be a little more sensitive. If we dont like something, we dont have to be so mean about it. I hate the thought that fashion is loosing it's creativity, but I hate even more the snooty attitude that some people have about it. I dont think it should be for super-elite people, because I am not super-elite. Fashion is art. I think it should be seen and expierenced by everyone. If and when that happens, more people will have an understanding about it. You shouldn't be allowed access to it just because your rich, or come from an important family. It should be for everyone.

Thats just my humble opinion, any and everyone can disagree with it, if thats how they feel. I just felt compelled to say something.

the prices are crazy! i guess this is for people who wear bling blings daily, arrive in their hummers and have the money for 2 million dollar jeans....

not all of it is that bad but this is

not for me.

why does every celebrity have to come up with some crappy clothing line these days?

or tacky perfume?

I fear that celebrity endorsed clothing lines (let's face it, that's what this whole Sweetface thing is), are here to stay. In my little country the best selling brand of bras is JLo's and that's saying alot since we only have TWO real lingerie stores and most people here can't afford a $30.00 bra :(

 2 million dollars!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 hell no Jlo!
she needs to run away and never come back and think about her stupid ideas:ninja:
