Joan Smalls

God!!!
When is Joan ever going to get a Vogue Paris, British Vogue and another Vogue Italia Cover?

Hasn't she done more than enough to Derserve it?!?!

Makes me soo upset! :censored:

Models of colour still have it soo hard!! Not even Liu Wen can get a decent cover, after all those many years of her hard work in this industry!! It's sick!! :judge: :furious:

^There isn't much at this very moment, and I just think we're all mad and upset at the injustice that's going on with Joan NOT getting Any of those major covers that I discussed above!!!

"Why can't they give Her the respect that SHE's entitled to? Why can't Those Vogue Editors treat HER like She would be treated by ANY stranger on the street?" -

I don't think it's just models of colour. There are many white girls on the models.com top 50 who have worked for years and never got a decent cover.

^Joan is the number #1 model in the world since 2012!!! Come on Now.....
There is no excuse!

Natasha Poly and Lara Stone were Carine Roitfeld's favorites and Emmanuelle Alt is still giving them Covers. And they managed to have babies in between.
I've heard people complain of how France/Paris is very racist.

And lets not even go into British Vogue...

How many women of colour have we seen covering all these main Vogue magazine covers?

Lets not kid ourself. I don't have to be a person of colour to see what's going on. And let me just tell you it isn't pretty!

If you're a Model OF colour it is an uphill battle. Doesn't matter if you're at the top of your game!!!

Models of colour are still being very much discriminated against. Refusing to acknowledge it won't make it go away. I do agree that there are white models who don't get the credit they deserve but that is an entirely different story that has absolutely nothing to do with what models of colour have to put up with. The fact that Joan is #1 right now and hasn't gotten a major Vogue cover in such a long time is utterly ridiculous.

^ On the flip side though, the quality and quantity of Joan's campaign portfolio is quite phenomenal.

^^^^I completely agree with both of you. British Vogue only puts models of color on Miss Vogue. When I saw Kate on their cover I was not surprised at all. French Vogue is ridiculous. Even vogue Latin America hasn't given her a cover yet which is equally ridiculous. Pisses me off. Joan is a great model and it's seems like she's getting little work now. I hope it has nothing to do with Kyle leaving IMG. It's just weird. Karlie has like 4 editorials in 3 different Vogue editions for July alone. so frustrating. Her last few months at #1...can we get at least TWO great covers?

I was actually going to ask this!

I think Joan has done fantastic since her debut, hopefully she did get Gucci!

Totally agree with you

I certainly was not trying to say that models of colour are not discriminated against. I just think in terms of Vogue covers, there are plenty of white girls like Magdalena who have been at the top of their game for years and still can't get a Paris or UK cover.

You're right, but that's a different topic ^_^

Guys, let's be real. Joan's work is slowly starting to decrease like Liya's did after she peaked. The sad reality is that the only black model to ever stay on a consistently high level year after year is Naomi Campbell. Liya still gets great work, just not every month like she used to. Joan is no longer the "new black girl" on the scene. Girls like Malaika, Imaan, Maria & Cindy are taking the "new black girl" jobs Joan once had. That pretty much cuts her amount of work in half. I'm not saying this is OK, but we all should know how this industry works by now. Should she have at least one VP cover under her belt? Yes. Have white girls gotten jobs that I believe Joan deserved? Absolutely(Gucci Spring 2012 & Etro Fall 2013!!!), but as long as the vast majority of leaders in this industry are white, there won't be that much REAL progress made toward diversity & longevity for models of color. At least we can take comfort in the fact that Joan will be around for a long time & will be an icon. Angela Lindvall, Carmen Kass & Karolina Kurkova don't get nearly as much work as they did in their heyday, but they are still very much SUPERMODELS in their own right. No one can ever take away Joan's credentials & what she has done throughout the years. She's still a power player in the modeling world & her name will always be thrown in the mix for supermodel bookings. After over 10 years in the biz, Liya Kebede is still booking campaigns for Louis Vuitton, Cavalli, Balenciaga, etc. She's just not booking these big campaigns every season like before. I think Joan will have the same career trajectory. We as fans just need to stop expecting 5 blue chip editorials, two major covers & an A-list campaign EVERY single month. This isn't 2011-2012 anymore.

^That's horrible. :ninja:
We'll just agree to disagree!

It's about demanding change and not settling for any less.

I for one will continue to complain and call people out when I see discrimination in this industry.

We have a voice and we need to use it!! We can't just be complacent any more and hope things will work out by themselves because they won't!
Trust Me!!

I can assure you things will go back to being the way they were before. Very White washed, if we just settle for whatever we can get and hope for a miracle!

Change starts with all of us banding together to demand what's right!

Why shouldn't we expect more from Joan?
Just because she is Latina. Just because shes Puerto Rican, Mixed-race, a women of colour, it doesn't mean she deserves any less work for that!!!

We have to discard those outdated ideologies away!!! The world is changing at rapid pace. People need to get with it!!

Trust and believe there is more than enough room for more than 10 women of colour, of all colours, to be successful in this industry, and that can benefit without competition.
The problem is that some People in the industry are just being lazy and stuck in their old ways.

We need to consistently called them out on that!

It reminds me of when industry insiders were telling models of Colour, we can only have one black or ethnic model at a time.

I've read black models say " Why did your agency send you? We already have one black/ethnic girl.

There is plenty of room for all these fresh new black/mixed-race/Latina/Asian/ethnic models to flourish at the same time with little to no competition. Whoever says otherwise is fooling themselves!!

At Joan's Level she should not have to put up with any of this nonesense. Especially as the current #1 model in the world.
She's more than earned her respect in this industry.
She deserves better!

Black models have it so hard. All women of color have it hard in the fashion industry. What you're saying is true. I mean, Karl loves Binx right now. Everyone wants that new black girl. But at the same time I'm not going to accept this and say "oh well, they had their time"... Nope. It's unacceptable and to become complacent is also unacceptable. I used Karlie as an example before. Why isn't her work decreasing? Come on now. I'm glad Joan has made it to where she is and I wish her nothing but continued success but I'm not about to say "well she had her time". Hoping there's more work coming from her.

I am glad she finally got to work with Steven Klein. Would've loved to see her work with him and inez and vinoodh more

I feel like you guys have taken my post the wrong way. I am in no way OK with the industry treating models of color like they're inferior to white models. All I'm saying is that we as fans shouldn't expect the same people who have been making the big casting decisions for decades to all of a sudden change their way of picking girls. It all starts at the top in this industry. People have been expressing their frustrations about diversity for years & years, but the same casting directors, designers & editors have been making the final decisions, season after season. They have this way of making models of color the "flavor of the month" and then throwing them away when a new girl comes along. That is awful, yet THEY'VE BEEN DOING IT FOR YEARS!! The only way diversity will truly stick is when the old die off & new blood enters the casting world. I still stick by what I said- we as fans shouldn't expect Joan to have 10 jobs a month at this stage in her career. As a model of color who has been at the top for almost five years, a lot of things are working against her, mainly the "there can only be one" thing that this ridiculous industry deemed the unspoken rule for black models. I by no means support this way of thinking. I do however, EXPECT this from an industry ruled by morons.
