net-a-porterAt 31, having modeled for half her life, KAROLÍNA KURKOVÁ is an industry veteran. Back at work three months after the birth of her second child, she tells EMMA SELLS what life is like for a professional poser.
MODELING ISN’T JUST A YOUNG GIRL’S GAME
“I’ve been modeling for 16 years. I’m amazed I’m still around; we live in such a fast-paced world and get over everything so quickly. I don’t allow myself to compete with the new girls – what good is thinking like that? When you’re older, you’re more confident and comfortable. And there’s something to be said for being seasoned, rather than being very new and raw and not knowing what you’re doing.”
YOU’VE GOT TO SWEAT AND GRIND TO EARN YOUR PLACE
“When I started modeling there was no social media, I didn’t come from a rich family and I didn’t date anyone famous – my work spoke for me. I’m glad, because I learned discipline, dedication and patience, and it kept me grounded. Now you can be famous so easily and it’s dangerous, it can mess with your head. People are coming from left and right with two million followers and, whether they say they’re a model or a stylist, they’ve never trained, never worked with anybody, never sacrificed anything. They’re taking work from people who gave up their time and energy to learn their craft. I’m not judging, but who’s going to have the longevity? You might be cool right now, but how long will it last? Are people going to get tired of you?”
THE TERM SUPERMODEL IS USED AND ABUSED
“It doesn’t really mean anything. It’s a strange word. I prefer it when people say I’m cool, or that I’m a hard worker, or I’m nice. Those are bigger compliments than saying I’m a supermodel. It’s just a title.”
PLAYING SPORTS WILL MAKE YOU SUCCESSFUL
“I get my work ethic from being an athlete: I was a professional gymnast from the ages of six to 13. Sports are really important for kids because you learn discipline, to be compared with others and to push yourself. You want something in life? You have to go get it. People tell me I’m lucky but I created opportunities. I didn’t sit on the sofa waiting for everything to come to me, I was pro-active.”
PERFECTION DOESN’T EXIST, BUT TRY ANYWAY
“As a kid I used to take rough notes during school, then go home and beautifully rewrite everything into my notebooks. I always strive for perfection. I know it doesn’t exist, but it inspires me and pushes me to be the best that I can be.”
LEARN TO LOVE YOUR BODY
“Working for Victoria’s Secret when I was 16 was a great lesson. Growing up I was tall and skinny with long arms and long legs, so I wasn’t confident in my own body. But I knew how to bring it out of myself on the catwalk and act sexy. I’m a goofy girl though, so I had to grow into that. I couldn’t hide in front of the camera; I had to embrace who I was.”
IF YOUR BODY IS WEAK, YOUR MIND IS TOO
“It’s hard to stay in shape when you have kids. You work, you look after them and you’re exhausted, but to go to the gym you have to have energy. But if my body feels soft and weak, I mentally start to feel the same. When I have a good workout and get those endorphins out, it makes a huge difference.”
MAKE WORK WORK FOR YOU
“I’m a modern mom, breastfeeding and working, being professional but giving my all to my baby. This is my fifth photo shoot since having my son [Kurková’s second child with fiancé Archie Drury, Noah Lee, born in November 2015] and he’s been on every one. I couldn’t do it if he wasn’t able to come with me – I need him nearby so I’m able to focus on work and not be worrying if he’s ok. I really look up to women who do it all and do it well. They’re my heroes.”
WOMEN NEED TO SUPPORT EACH OTHER, NOT COMPETE
“Breastfeeding is beautiful and special but it’s hard and it can be painful. When I posted a picture of me feeding my baby, I didn’t plan to start a conversation; I wanted to celebrate the women who do it too. And when we’re looking at pictures and music videos that are much more vulgar, how can we have a problem with something so sweet and precious? I’m all about empowering women, because whether you’re working or if you’re at home taking care of your kids, it’s not easy being a woman.”
IT’S OK TO FAIL
“Having a second baby is really pushing me. I can’t believe I’m already working; with my first [Tobin Jack, born in October 2009] I took it much more slowly. My kids inspire me to go out and create, to realize that this is not the time to be shy. They’re also teaching me that it’s ok to fail, as long as you do the best you can.”
FASHION IS A MEANS OF COMMUNICATION
“I have a formula for red-carpet dressing. I break it down: what is [the event], what city is it in, what’s my audience, what am I trying to say? There’s thought behind everything I do. I sometimes have people pull clothes for me, but I email them with my input and opinions. There is no aspect of my life or career that I’m not totally hands-on with, whether I’m shopping for groceries or dressing for the red carpet – nobody’s going to tell me what I should wear.”
