KATE YOUNG: On the same wavelength with Yigal Azrouël
By ERIC WILSON
September 9, 2007

LAST week in his design studio, Yigal Azrouël explained the idea behind his collection by pulling out books of photographs of surfers taken by LeRoy Grannis and Jeff Devine in the 1960s and ’70s. Kate Young, the stylist who has worked with Mr. Azrouël on his runway shows for the last three seasons, knew he was not talking about Hawaiian prints and board shorts.
“You’ll be able to see the connection, I promise,” Ms. Young said as she sifted through a thick pile of Polaroids of jersey dresses with twisted necklines, jodhpur pants and pinstripe shirts that did not look remotely appropriate for beach wear. Ms. Young, who is also styling the shows of Nicole Miller, Derek Lam and Jenni Kayne this week, said her job was to help the designers communicate their sometimes abstract inspirations with concise stories that can read, preferably in under 30 turns, on a catwalk. That, and to help them avoid making mistakes.
“Editors don’t want to see a show with 60 looks,” she said.
Mr. Azrouël’s work turned a corner about two years ago when he began to trust his instincts for layered, unstructured clothes with a slightly imperfect patina, which meshes well with the casually great style of Ms. Young, with her straggly white hair and her hands bunched into a mannish gray cardigan over skinny jeans. In a “Look Book” feature in New York Magazine, Ms. Young described her style as “Goth Victoriana Governess. Sometimes I look kind of ‘Mommy drinks.’ ”
At 32, Ms. Young, Oxford educated and apprenticed to Anna Wintour as a former assistant at Vogue, has a good sense of how to encourage, or gently discourage, designers. A model stepped out from behind a mirror wearing an ivory cotton top — a cross between a camisole and a henley — under a windowpane-plaid camp shirt with the sleeves rolled up and over a pair of droopy gray jersey pants of the variety favored by harems, M. C. Hammer and, lately, Giorgio Armani. This was a risky outfit.
“Listen,” she said, “do you think we could try a skinny jean, and we’ll find a new top for those pants.”
Mr. Azrouël said the pants were adapted from a childhood memory of wearing the too-large pants of his older brother after they had been surfing. Ms. Young fidgeted with the length of the top and questioned whether it needed to be tucked into the pants.
“Maybe it needs to not be so long,” she said. “It’s like grandpa with his remote control in his waistband.”
When Mr. Azrouël showed his finished collection on Tuesday afternoon, the top had been shortened and finished with a trim of twill tape, which softened the impact of the dropped-rise pants. Ms. Young’s hand could be felt elsewhere, in the selection of shoes — sporty Manolo Blahnik sandals for women and sneakers Mr. Azrouël designed with K-Swiss for men — that reflected the garment-washed colors of the collection (here, the tangerine, the turquoise and red that came from the photos of ’60s surfers). How Ms. Young put the clothes together, rolling the short sleeves up high like a greaser would do, made all the difference.
“She gets it so right,” Mr. Azrouël said. “It’s like Kate was going through my closet.”
And the high-waist shorts and pants, shown with Gidget gingham shirts and necklaces made of jute and what looked like sea glass, conveyed, believe it or not, the relaxed attitude of boys running on the beach.

My Town: NYC
Stylist Kate Young Finds Quiet Charm Amid the Chaos

September 08, 2006

With the arrival of Fashion Week today, New York will inevitably become a hyperkinetic whirlwind of finery and flash, fueled by canapes and mini-bottles of Moet. Thankfully, there are people like Kate Young, the yin to the over-indulgent yang. “I’m drawn to things that are organic, industrial, slightly minimal,” says the stylist and contributing fashion editor for both Teen Vogue and Interview. “As well as things that are antique, that have a patina to them.”
Her stripped-down, story-to-tell elegance is evident in the way she dresses her clients -- Jennifer Connelly, Hilary Swank, Michelle Williams, to name a few -- as well as in her designs, a collection of Victorian mourning jewelry and objets d’art such as compasses, corkscrews, and hand-crocheted shawls. “I’m inspired by my friends,” she explains. “And the New York lifestyle – spending days going to galleries, sitting in cafes...” Here, the Pennsylvania native, who’s called New York home for the past nine years, offers her favorite places in the city to browse fiction, sit back with tea, and stare at the wallpaper. In her own words:
Favorite Café:
Cafe Sabarsky in the Neue Galerie. It’s my favorite room in NYC.
Favorite Shop:
R store in Tribeca. It's gorgeous and industrial and minimal. They have the best jeans, t-shirts and cashmere that don't feel at all mass-produced. The men’s suits are really gorgeous. I'm dying for a couple of the mercury glass handblown pendant lamps... and, of course, I love my own jewelry collection, which is sold there...
Favorite Lingerie Store:
Jean Yu. It’s also my favorite store for a dress or a gown. Couture panties are the most extravagant thing ever, but everything Jean does is precise and in perfect taste.
Favorite Jewelry Shop:
Tenthousandthings. I love the feel of the store -- organic and modern. The guys who own it are the best -- sweet and hilarious and unbelievably talented. Their jewelry is beautiful and the selection of other jewelers’ stuff is amazing.
Favorite Record Store:
Other Music. It has the best selection of CD's, plus really great staff picks.
Favorite Strange Shop:
De Vera. I want everything.
Favorite Antique Shop:
Cafiero Select. David Cafiero's shop that is never open!!!! I love him and his taste. It changes all the time, but he has the greatest eye.
Favorite Lunch Place:
BG at Bergdorf Goodman. The wallpaper makes me feel like a lady and the people-watching is incredible.
Favorite Place for Tea:
The Adore. It’s one of my favorite places in the city. It’s a little café on the 2nd floor. The storefront sells teas and madeleines, then you can go upstairs for lunch and have little sandwiches.
Favorite Takeout:
Taim. They have falafel that is sooooo good, and ginger-mint lemonade.
Favorite Bookstore:
Three Lives. There’s such a good selection of fiction. It’s a charming, beautiful shop with a great, great staff-picks table.
Favorite Beauty
FragranceCandle Store: Aedes de Venustas. They have decadent, rich Goth decor and rare, luxurious brands and fragrances.

Derek’s Gyspy Girl

A moment with Kate Young, stylist of Derek Lam’s show:

So what was your inspiration?

The inspiration was Guy Bourdin’s photographs for French Vogue in the 1970’s. There was a slight gypsy feeling, so there was a little bit of volume and color. Then there was a whole section of eveningwear in the end that was based on lingerie that was also inspired by Guy Bourdin. We wanted her to be like a fun girl, like a girl you wanted to go dancing with. And I think what’s appealing about those photographs and that era was that the women wore fashion, you know, they were aligned with designers and they bought the collection every season but they also like partied in it and went and danced in it, got laid in it. So we wanted it to look that way, like women can have a lot of fun and be sexy in these clothes but they were really still very well made and beautiful pieces.
Have you worked with Derek on past collections?
Yeah, on every one since the first one.

And how do you think his style has evolved?

I think that Derek is known for his dresses and his pretty, feminine pieces, and last season was a little bit of departure from that and this season is sort of a combination. It’s an evolution. She’s a feminine pretty woman but there’s definitely still that harder edge from last season. So I think that Derek is friends with a lot of women and he loves women and the women who he’s friends with tend to be successful, strong New York kind of girls so you see some of that.
You’ve been very busy this week.
Yeah, this is the last of the four shows I styled. I also did Jenni Kayne, Yigal Azrouël, and Nicole Miller.

Any tips on getting through Fashion Week?

Oh, I don’t know. Vitamins!
