Knee/Thigh High Socks

update: I think they are just quite close to the leg....almost sort of stretchy so it's like you got tights that are just slightly too big for you which creates that sort of 'falling down effect'

A cheap, nice and effective way to get those would be to buy semi-sheer tights. Then cut them at the top (you get two very very very long socks and you throw away the "pantie" area), when you wear them they will create the "falling down effect".

^ they don't "fray" they'd curl up a tiny bit, but I love that "raw" handmade look....

yeah they would curl, no frayage though. You could probably gently 'hem' the tops though so they wouldn't curl and just have a slightly thicker 'band' at teh top. Am worried about how effectively they would stay up though. Could just buy a cheap pair and try it I suppose. Might feel a bit foolish though thinking about walking around wearing half a pair of pantyhose!

Ok... Im changing my mind lol. Anyways... the ones that were my least favorite are quickly becoming my favorite... the Prada ones... now that I get that they are doing a 20's thing.

If any of you try the cutting tights thing please let us know how that works out because I cant think of any other way to get the look.

 Love your comment Meg!

I actually like to do my own stuff rather than buy it all done... ...so I guess to each their own.... ^_^

i love them :woot:

i'd be slightly nervous about wearing them cause i always thought above-the-knee stuff was a little skankish but oh, i'd probably risk it :P

Thats what I think too. Youd have to be very careful what you wore with them for that reason.

I love it! It's a great look. I especially love it semi-slouched in a medium weight fabric.

I also like the way Carrie wears them with heels.

ok i tried it myself, cutting up a pantyhose at the very top... i think they're not quite long enough to be very slouchy in the Prada style, but they do work ok. can't wait to try them out in public.. with a dress or skirt in knee-length.
and i'm left with a pair of see-through hotpants  great

^
 Who doesn't need a pair of those?!

thanks for the update on the sock bit though browneyes. What color/denier are the tights?

hehe :D

i did two actually.. one in "solid" black and the other in a more sheer black.. (didn't have any grey at hand.. too bad cause i liked those on the runway. but maybe black will be more wearable anyways)
the sheer seem to work best :flower:

yes I prefer the sheer look best myself as well. They stay up alright then?

well they won't stay up all the way up past the knee (even though i cut them right at the "base" of the shorts bit of the tights, i.e. pretty high up) but sort of up to the knee. and i can't say that they would stay up an entire day, because i haven't tried walking them out of the house yet. maybe it also will depend on the quality of the tights..
my suggestion is to take a pair of old tights that you won't miss and maybe give it a go. that's what i did :flower:

I copied this picture from the Spring/Summer 2006 ads thread. There, it had in turn been taken from the model Sasha Pivo..(something or other, sorry)'s thread. So the exact source of it is lost on me.

But from the pic you can see that the Prada stockings are made of some sort of lightweight fabric.. cotton/silk/??
Thought this maybe could help people going for this look ^_^

Edit: Maybe it should be resized? But i don't know how to do that.. :(

BRILLIANT browneyes. Yes it appears that they are in fact a thin knit silk stocking. By the way I've attached the now resized image in with this post.
