There comes a certain time when you just have to stop and think about if you want to spend your money on the name of what you are buying. Let's be realistic, why is there a sudden high demand for LV bags? Don't tell me its because everyone is sooooooooooooooo fond of the monogram LV. Most people buy that bag now because it has become a social status/symbol. If you carry a LV you have money.....are people supposed to see you with this bag and assume that you are rich? Most people carrying these bags probably skipped lunch for 3 months to be able to save enough to carry the smallest/cheapest LV bag.

Its like going out to eat at a steak house. You can go to Outback SteakHouse and pay 16.99$ for a steak, or you can go to a place like Gibby's and pay 39.99$ for that same steak. You are no longer paying for the slab of meat that comes on your plate, but you are paying for the name of the establishment that you are eating at.
you are right...i hate the whole idea of people being disgusted with something because of it's identifiability as a designer item...there were/are fendi baguettes that were truly beautiful, there were are vuittons that are truly stunning...but sometimes even a rich girl or guy likes to buy what are called "status" bags...not because they need to flaunt it, just because "why not"...sometimes a logoed gucci bag is the perfect compliment to the most understated of outfits.

and about the steak thing...i think your analogy was a little off...you can pay $19.99 for a steak at outback or $88 for a steak at smith and wollensky...and they will be very different things, yet some will accuse that you are paying for the same steak when in reality there's a very REAL difference in quality and satisfaction.

Mikejames,

I think that the point with the steak still got across. After a certain point, you are no longer paying just for the meat, you are paying for the name.

I do agree with you though about buying a bag because it accents your outfit perfectly. I don't care if what I buy has a label or not, I care that it matches and looks good when put together. The name or the logo means nothing to me.

I just hate it when people buy something simply because of the name attached to it. I personally find it disgusting when everyone and their mom and cat own the same peice just because of the name. If you like the style, go buy it. Have fun with it. But why are you buying it? Because it has the logo splattered all over it or because you honestly like it?

When I was in Rome a few weeks ago I had dinner at this Argentinian restaurant. It wasn't all that brilliant except for the MEAT. It was worth paying a small premium for it. So there. I'm hungry too.

Frankly I don't care what name is on a bag. I only carry a bag to tote my junk around in. And my army/surplus messenger bag has served me well  And yes, it has become a digusting phenomona with men and their 'male' bags as well.

If I like it, then I like it- even if it is a tee from wal-mart. It shouldn't matter if it is a "label" if you look good in it and are comfortable... and as for the whole LV deal, I don't get it either. Personally, I love the style of mine (papillon) and it's really functional, otherwise, I wouldn't have gotten it!

thanks for the reminder...sometimes it is lost in these discussions that clothing and accessories have distinct FUNCTIONS...sometimes it's just about what works -- label or no label.

quite erhhh  interesting?

Pride and prejudice
Getting in to nightclubs and bars is a tricky business and increasingly bouncers and door staff are using clothes' labels as a criteria for turning people away. We've all heard about the places where Burberry is all but banned: there are clubs in the UK where they will not let anyone donning a Burberry baseball cap or any outerwear into their premises for fear of trouble. Other labels which have fallen into a "designer" underclass are Henri Lloyd (originally a hi-tech sailing label that has been big in hip hop circles for a while), Hackett (which began as an English country gentlemen's label, but now has a huge urban casual following) and even Kickers (from rave to Dave?). Historically, youth tribes have reacted to this sort of label banning and bashing by being even more passionate about what they wear, so it looks unlikely that we'll be seeing any less of these brands. The real challenge will be how much of this gear you can get past the doormen.

from fuk :flower:

This isn't label snobbism so much as some of the people who wear these labels.

Where I live if you're a foul-mouthed hooligan you invariably wear a Burberry cap. This doesn't mean to say that everyone wearing a Burberry cap is a foul-mouthed hooligan it's just that the clubs can't be bothered to sort them out (this is the real reason as opposed to the silly reasons that clubs themselves give).

social stratification based on what labels one wears is quite silly and unjust..
what if clubs started keeping out everyone wearing lets say H&M, Chanel, Zara or LV? wouldn't it be horrible? who would ever enjoy this? its a kind of mindless facism

Sadly, they own the clubs so if they want to be facists we live in a democratic country (ies) and that's their choice...You couldn't get into a whole lot of restaurants wearing anything less than a tuxedo/gown so it's only fair that clubs can set their rules as well...

However they are not so much banning the designer's items so much as easily recognizable logo-items. i.e. you could wear Burberry Prorsum to a night-club just not the signature Burberry Nova-Plaid.

It's going to be much harder hiring bouncers now they must concentrate on having a trained eye as well as a black one

As well As a Black one? Do you mean black eyes or Black bouncers?

Black-eyes...black bouncers are not common in the UK other than in London and a few other places.

Spotting a raging-fcuktard isn't exactly hard though...I could tell you who's going to cause trouble and who's not.

No, no, no, hold the phone.... perhaps i should have said 'black and blue' : as in ouch, some drunken eejit boxed my precious visual organs

I am glad that i came back to read this thread again. I just find it hard to think people are so SHALLOW. I wanted my Gucci bag 3 years ago, and just before my 8th Anniversary i went with my husband and bought my Black Jackie O. I chose black because it had to be discreet and last for decades to come and go with my predominently black wardrobe.

I bought my CD Logo T-shirt over a year and a half because

1. I never saw anyone with them(i dont rave, or socialise alot)

2. It was funky and could be dressed up or down

3. I loved the style - it was comfortable and showed of my boobs

I am not a victim of labels and as i have said only have a handful of logo'd stuff. I love unusual things and tend to buy clothes for the quality and not logos or names.

In the same breath i have no problem with people buying labels and logos, everyone likes what they like. People look at celebrities and because they have the name brand bag, they want one too. I have read on this forum of people wanting a bag because so-and-so has one. E.G. The Birkin Bag. So it is culture that dictates to young people what is cool and fashionable to wear, they buy into this culture because they too want to feel like a celebrity or someone with class and worth something. This is so very SAD! :( :( :( :(

I agree with you....

I don't care if people buy stuff with logos or not.

The reality is much more simple, most people wear label to look cool. In "upper class societies", they see "logoed" people as ridiculous. In our everyday society though, people that carry LV, that have a Guess shirt (yes ONLY a Guess shirt) or a Nike cap are cool.

I'm not really into labels, but I am buying one of those I Adore Dior shirts (the one with Eloise) because I think they are cute. The thing is, down here by New Orleans, no one has that kind of stuff. If they do, they wear it subdued. I'll probably wear the shirt with jeans and flip-flops with a jacket. The thing is, families here that are very rich tend to show it off- including my mom, who is a teacher (my dad provides the real money) and now she's becoming subdued. She carries a LV to school... I'm not trying to show off by ordering the shirt, it's just that I love Eloise and Dior... it's just something no one else will have! Should I get it?
hey, I have been lookign for that shirt!!! where did you find it?? I soo wanna buy it, please tell me where you found it!!

i always catch alot of snobby comments because my closet is 90% versace . i admit when i'm looking for clothes ill go straight to versace first but its not because i cannot wear anything else, its just because i know i will find something in there that i like. I've tried on stuff in more reasonably priced stores but to me it doesnt compare in style or more importantly in fit. As far as wearing visible labels, i think its just tacky, versace has a look of their own that is easily identifiable without any tags at all inside or outside. for me i buy what i like and if it happens to be one designer so be it. Wearing something just to impress others is ridicoulous, especially since you can be sure noone really gives a damn whether yur wearing Gucci or a potato sack.
