WoodKid and Lana Del Rey performing "Iron" in New York City (HighLine Ballroom) on Saturday October 15th 2011 (last song of the show) (and the show was the last of the North American tour).

LANA DEL REY is the music name on everyone's lips: her first UK gig sold out in 13 minutes; Christopher Kane and Emilio de la Morena chose her music to accompany their spring/summer 2012 shows; and her debut single, the beautifully haunting Video Games, has already had over two million You Tube hits - despite only being released this week.

"I had no idea about the fashion shows," she told us. "But I think they chose Video Games because it embodies summertime sadness. Fashion is inspired by youth and nostalgia and draws inspiration from the best of the past. I think both the song and the collections touch on the light and the dark side of life."

Perhaps surprisingly given her melancholic sound (described by the singer as "Hollywood sadcore"), American-born Del Rey is inspired by Elvis, Eminem, Frank Sinatra and Diamanda Galas. She admits her rise to musical stardom was almost accidental.

"I was always singing, but didn't plan on pursuing it seriously," she said. "When I got to New York City when I was 18, I started playing in clubs in Brooklyn - I have good friends and devoted fans on the underground scene, but we were playing for each other at that point - and that was it."

With favourite labels including Chanel and Versace, and inspired by Sophia Loren and Johnny Blue Eyes, the 24-year-old has created a very individual look for herself - one she dubs "Ghetto Monégasque". Her bouffant hair, doll-like lashes teamed with blinging gold chains and vintage T-shirts have very much become her trademark. Born Lizzy Grant, the singer knows exactly how she wants to be seen - her chosen stage name another way of reflecting her musical identity.

"I wanted a name I could shape the music towards," she explained. "I was going to Miami quite a lot at the time, speaking a lot of Spanish with my friends from Cuba - Lana Del Rey reminded us of the glamour of the seaside. It sounded gorgeous coming off the tip of the tongue."

Lana Del Rey's first UK gig will take place on November 16 at Scala, London.

Thank you for the videos. She sounds much better, I like that she kind of kept the same tone through the whole song this time.
I think that all this story about her father being rich, Lana being linked to the same recording company as Lady Gaga, and the success not being that accidental can definitely be true. To what point all she says is real or is all created is hard to tell, but I love the persona anyway. I love the look, the name, and, most importantly, the music. I just wish she would keep the same "Ghetto Monégasque" look for the shows as well instead of cute dresses, although she does look cute in them.

I think she just needs time to embody her new character on stage
Plus theres been so much hype around her lately that people are probably expecting so much from her now its not that easy I guess...

not gonna lie, i adore video games and blue jeans, but there is just something off about her...i don't know if it's the whole "contrived/manufactured" thing or what, but I find something disingenuous about her....

This thread is about Lana Del Rey's style and music. Please remember to stay on topic. Thank you.

I can't figure out what was off topic about our discussion.....isn't this the same as all the conversation about Lady Gaga, for example, and her 'persona', including her personal style and aesthetic? why is this any different?

^ plastic surgery/personal life is always edited/removed, it derails topics completely and members are usually invited to take it to the Rumor Has It area.. even if it is a harmless reference (like yours), seriously, you leave it, someone posts something worse, you remove it and then they make a big deal for you letting the 'harmless' one stay :ninja:.. it's a no-win situation so we just wipe it all out.

Btw, I wanted to comment, I listened to this girl's music the other day, and like Lady Gaga, cannot find what the hype's about, if you haven't seen her and just listened to her, she could be anyone.. good voice, but those abound in reality shows. Her look's kind of Brooklyn-ized (she lives there I imagine?), and I guess it's all fun and trendy, but cannot find something that keeps glued, or even interested. And I did try!.

I do like the sets of photographs they've done with her, taking the whole late 60s-mid 70s aesthetic, reminded me immediately of France Gall.

I love her. Her style, her voice, her music. Amazing.

Does anyone know where that American flag sweater she's wearing is from?

I've been trying to find that sweater, I think it's vintage.

I think Video Games and Blue jeans are great songs, and I think the "fake-ness" of her Lana Del Rey persona makes the whole deal pretty interesting.

The atmosphere of 50s actress-glam meets 70s/80s LA meets trashy Brooklyn is nice, and I think that there is even some David Lynch in there...

For instant the bass in Blue Jeans sounds a lot like the theme from Twin Peaks mixed with Chris Isaak's Wicked Games.

(though the David Lynch vibe maybe partly due to her looks really creeping me out)

That being said, from what I've heard, some of her other songs are not as great. Hope the people who write her songs step it up (or does she write them herself?).
