I've brought back this thread to share something. It took me a few years... but I've slowly gotten around to liking leggings. I still wouldn't prefer leggings under skirts, but I've mostly been okay with leggings under denim mini skirts. My primary criticism of this trend was that it ruined the beauty of skirts and of wearing them with skirts. But somehow, some way; I've gotten around my hate of leggings under skirts. So if '80s types still like this, I'm not as seriously hateful anymore. This even includes the rocr types who want to wear Converses with this whole look. I'm not sure if this style still exists. At least now, I'm not extremely hateful of the style.
The turning point for me either came with slip-on flats or with some sandals (especially flip-flop/thong sandals). I remember having debated on tFS after completely trashing the trend. Eventually liking the style probably came from a Dodge Grand Caravan commercial from last year or two years ago. The girl in the commercial wore this black T-shirt with some certain accents on it, a blue denim skirt, ankle-length pink leggings, and blue canvas lace-up sneakers. I'm still not crazy about leggings, but I'm a bit more appreciative of them now.
Here is a look I've grown to accept:
* black T-shirt with multi-colored accents and designs
* your average denim short skirt
* ankle-length leggings
* canvas sneakers (lace-up, Converse low-tops, Vans-style slip-ons, etc) or ballet flats
I'D AVOID: flip-flops, open-toe or peep-toe shoes, and dressy sandals
I've found non-patterned leggings to look very well. A few girls I've known at my community college have worn leggings. I've found leggings with lace trim at the bottom of the leggings to be very nice. If you're going to do lace-trim leggings, I'd probably wear pumps or flats because I always imagine lace to be an elegant touch. Therefore, wearing sneakers with lace-trim leggings would ruin the balance of elegance to me. I still don't understand this style in warmer weather. But at least I'm a bit more respectful of leggings under skirts. I still have no problem with leggings under tunics.
Finally, I'd like to share some leggings that I've found very creative. One of my friends (whom I've eventually graduated with from my community college) had worn some white tattooed leggings. to be paired with this black tunic or black dress. She paired them with denim blue American Eagle slip-on sneakers. The tattoo design on one or both of the legs look like a big tattoo you'd find on the arm of someone. It was, to say the least, a very creative design on a pair of white leggings. Too bad I don't know who made it or what the tattoo looked like.
