Leggings

^ Tights, Leggings... I assumed they were the same thing, am I not right?!

I duno, I guess I put them in a different category, but some people use the words interchangeably (I have no idea how to spell that haha)

Tights have feet; leggings don't. That's it, no?

In the Marc Jacobs pics above, it could be tights or leggings, from what is visible.

(Also, thanks for the feedback on my photo above, those who replied )

oh, i usually think of tights as a different matterial, too...is it nylon? my idea of leggings are stretch cotton (much more opaque/thick than tights).

Those marc jacobs are tights. Leggings are cotton jersey material, tights are tight nylon and some spandex.

OK, I messed around with a few footless tights & full-length tights combos at home. What do you think? I'm not certain I'd actually go out in the street like this but it is at least more interesting than the black leggings and denim mini skirt so many girls in my town wear!

edit: please do not quote images

Photo: my own.

Excuse the somewhat dodgy camera and pasting skills.:P
the heart ones are very cute : >

well I dont think so, unless your Lindsay Lohan all she wears is black leggings. Unless your under 18 , you end up looking like Peggy Bundy

The maturation process continues for me in regards to leggings, especially leggings under skirts. I'm now a little less tolerant of leggings under skirts. While this is a dying trend (God bless!), there have been exceptions. I think a real person who follows fashion sees a style from many perspectives until one such twist is actually likable by the one person.

Here is an example of leggings under a skirt that I've slowly liked. Have any of you seen the commercial for the new Dodge Grand Caravan? The one girl is wearing some sort of black T-shirt (I don't use "tee" here. I save that word for golf tees, fits to a tee (though I don't use this expression), and the like), a light blue denim skirt, pink leggings, and light blue Converse-like low top sneakers. I overall think that this look is very acceptable as long as you don't look like some trashy punk rock girl.

So here, I've been less tolerant of leggings with sneakers. Some of you may remember when I disliked the combination of jersey knit gaucho pants (love them or hate them) with sneakers. I've seen some little girls wear the wide-legged flowy cropped pants them with some sneakers... very nice. Haven't seen anything truly trashy. After all, I consider gaucho pants somewhat like skirts since they offer the sort of flair of wearing a skirt, only you're wearing (my words) two skirts- one on each leg. And all along, I've considered gaucho pants as being classy and doesn't need to be dressed down with sneakers. There are some ladies who don't look bad with gauchos with sneakers. Back to leggings for a moment. If you wear leggings under a skirt with sneakers, it kind of depends on your overall look in which the sneakers could kill your look. I'm referring to either lace-up sneakers or Vans-style slip-on sneakers as I refer to sneakers with leggings under skirt. I'm not specifically referring to sneakers that are skimmers, the zig-zag strap mary janes (which are classified as sneakers though they are very cute shoes), or anything like that. Certain looks have to all be pulled together perfectly to make sneakers work. Otherwise, I've seen only a few pumps paired with leggings under a skirt.

As a final note, tunics with leggings are perfectly fine. I have a friend at my community college from Paris, France. She wore a black coat, gray tunic, black leggings, and low-heel black pumps. She was stunning!

leggings are amazing under a tunic, i agree...dress, or something flowy...and the denim skirt, when CLEAN...i think they are a staple.

just like how skinny denim became SUPER trendy, but never goes out of style (much like how wide legged denim is), tights and leggings will be around, just in different prints, colors, and how they are worn

Tunics with leggings can be a very good casual look. A casual style I'm envisioning is something I can recall from a catalog. Maybe Newport News, maybe JCPenney, maybe even Victoria's Secret. I think there was one look that had a red and white-striped tunic paired with white leggings. I almost see the tunic + leggings combination as a perfect Summer casual look. You're not going to see me hate on this. One of my other friends at school sometimes wear a black tunic with some red patterned accents to it, paired with black leggings, and wearing peep-toe high-heel pumps. Tunics with leggings are absolutely fine by me. Find a tunic, find some nice leggings, pick your shoes, and away you go. Smooth sailing ahead. Then again... maybe the look in question had some nautical influence to it. It was probably a St. John's Bay look (exclusive to JCPenney for what I know).

I think if you're going to do tunic with leggings for the Summer, some good shoes are needed. I usually think of some cute flats. Perhaps even ballet flats with a cute little bow at the front. There are ladies (and maybe some guys) who don't like ballet flats, but I think they can look lovely on women of all ages. Getting this look down for colder times probably isn't a good idea. Reason why is because I don't think leggings are warm enough in colder times unless wearing longjohns. You could do like my friend who paired leggings with matching legwarmers and cute flats. You'd still have your ankles and feet pretty much warmed while looking very trendy and cute. Unlike jeans, I think you can also get away with wearing boots with leggings. I consider those to be absolutely fine as well. Black leggings + tall black boots = fine by me! Probably wouldn't look too right if you had ankle boots to go with matching leggings.

I've still eased up on leggings even more. I just associate leggings under skirts as some sort of punk rock thing. I'm not a rock person, and ESPECIALLY not a punk/Goth/emotional (I hate "emo") person. You know, you mostly see young girls wear leggings with skirts. I think it's more like a young look rather than something for those in secondary school (middle and high school) or higher. Some styles look best on certain people. There will almost always be exceptions or someone's interpretation of the right way to dress a style. Some can do it, some cannot. I mentioned the lady with the pink leggings and blue sneakers from a Dodge commercial advertising the Grand Caravan. Some will get it best, some will not. A look still has to be best on all or most figures to be completely acceptable by me.

Well said! I agree completely!

I love my leggings and tunic tops. But where I live, nobody wears this style yet. I'm in the middle of nowhere. It's just coming in. Which is so insane to me! Because I've been wearing it for a while and I used to get stares like I was crazy-- you have to understand, I'm in BFE-- and jeans tucked into riding boots are just coming in here too. Insane isn't it?

S. Marie, your location says "The Midwest." Is it probably too cold to pull off a leggings look as the reason why you haven't seen any legging looks in the Midwest?

21 pairs
i don't wear pants
people against them are trend followers
whatever you feel
leggings are just 32786x comfortable, fast and easy than pants

John, actually, it's 65 degrees here... I'm kind of lower Midwest/Upper South

Leggings need to go away. And they will. Tights will always be stylish.
