London College of Fashion

I've been wanting to attend the London College of Fashion since I was very young.
I've lived in London untill I was 8, moved to holland and lived there up till now (18 years of age) I just completed high school here on the highest level (atheneum) with an ok average and subjects art, maths, economics, management & organisation in my package. I will be doing a gap year this coming school year. I'll do a Italian language course at the scuola leonardo da vinci for 9 months in florence with extra subjects such as history of italian fashion, history of italian art and italian business language. After this I should be fluent in Italian next to the Dutch and English I already speak fluently and I have a fairly good knowledge of everything fashion and art.
My hopes are set on applying for the Fashion Management(BA) course after this gap year.

Sorry for the whole story but could somebody please indicate what my chances could be of getting in?

Do you know what else they require for international students that wants to apply? Any tests or something?:flower:

I'm studying journalism there at the moment, and I'm an international student from Hong Kong.

All they asked to see were my IB results (or A-Levels, if you take them), some written work/samples, and they also asked me to write an essay for them on "Why I want to study a degree in Journalism." If you've already studied English in A-Levels (or whatever equivalent exam you've taken), I think they'll just base it on your grade, but won't make you take any extra tests :p

LCF is an easy free-ride into the industry these days. They certainly do make the most of their reputation , but dont quite justify it much anymore.

The photography department is lacking in comparison to other smaller colleges and uni's now. The courses are overpriced IMO.

If you want to increase your chances of getting in there are three things to do..

1) Dress with your own style, look individual and creative. Mostly these 'types' get in.
2) Be willing to be moulded by them
3) Call your sugar daddy and he will sort it

(ive heard of many examples to support all three, particularly number 3!)

The reason i never applied was because of all these bad stories and things i have witnessed from those who have attended. They even got bitter towards one of the youngest fashion photographers around (i wont name her) because at the interview, most other people there had her work in their inspiration folders! They accused her of feeling like she had already made it (before she had even spoken to them!)

Seems kinda similar with the other courses, but not to such a extreme degree.

thanks for your post lucbecks!
I've always thought that for fashion management, LCF was the best place to be..?

Does anyone no other (better?) alternatives?

i'd say it's the complete opposite, more like if you wear your louis vuitton and burberry you'll get in. from what i saw anyway. it was either that or a topshop top that 99% of the population has.

it's a well known fact in our university. interviews for non-eu students are so easy and some of them are even done by phone (even a journalism one when you would obviously need to show an example of writing)

And for EU student? Is it phone interview or face to face one?
What courses are you in? And would you said that it's a great school, are they great opportunities after you've gratuated?
Thanks for your help. I would like to know a little bit more about this school as I'm planning to apply for next fall.

Well said. I've heard lots of negative stuff the past few years and it's almost as if because they have the word fashion in their name, that's it. They used to have this fantastic reputation, but now it's as if they don't bother. If they pulled their fingers out of their arses they'd easily be brilliant again as they have lots of talented students go their way. It's just a pity they don't use them to their advantage

hi, i'm so sorry for takign so long to reply. i'm not too sure about the interviews for EU students but i'm almost positive i've heard someone say they had to fly to london for an interview.
i wouldn't say it's a great school, it's much more about its reputation. and the more i speak to people who studied there, in different courses, the more they express the same frustration as me. in terms of getting great opportunities after you graduate, it's a whole different story. LCF, much like CSM, relies on reputation and people love it when you have their names on your CV. that's what's keeping me going there anyway, as sad as it sounds

Thank you for your answer. I know this kind of a school and yeah it's sad to say that's its name is better known than its quality. I will apply anyway and see if I can get in!

i'm about to apply for the HE Diploma in Fashion Media and Communication, anybody else in the same situation? does anybody know when they start with the interviews?

I want to apply for next year (fall 2010) and I would like the help of someone who have already applied through UCAS. I'm a little bit lost. Do I have to enter all the shcools that I have attented since I'm little?
International still have to apply through UCAS? Do I need to translate everything?
Thanks for your help.

for which course are you applying? and what does it mean UCAS? i'm sorry to ask, but i'm also an international student and i have no idea about that!

UCAS is the system used to apply to universities. Agnes38 we were told to put high schools, colleges etc but not primary school.

You need to put in every school/college where you gained a formal qualification.

You don't get a formal qualification at primary do you? I hope not because I can't remember what I got!!!

so i really, really want to study fashion journalism at lcf when i'm done with high shcool (the norwegian kind...) but from what i'm reading, you guys don't have that much nice to say about the college.. is it really that bad?

I don't think it's that bad. It has it's faults but I'd much rather be at LCF(or CSM) than at any other arts institute in the UK! (and I'm sure most people would too).
