London College of Fashion

i think it's really bad. i have considered changing to fashion journalism at epsom before :(

i am really interested at studying at LCF but i keep reading so many bad things on this thread :( not to mention the application process for international students is really confusing! what would you guys say the best major at LCF is? i am definitely not interested in fashion design but i am open to other majors besides fashion journalism (which is what i want to be in) i really like that LCF offers fashion journalism, the good fashion schools here in america don't have anything like that (parsons, fit, etc)

sorry for the novel! :)

i'm a bit confused about the majors. is fashion journalism open to freshmen who have never attended college before or do you have to do a foundation first? i'm interested in fashion journalism and fashion marketing...

there are so many different factors when it comes to judging how good the college is...
it is big school, every course is different from one another. even among fashion design specific courses it differs. even small factors such as tutors and even time tables can contribute to whether it is a good college or not.
this year my course director changed and tutors changed and in a way, this course is a lot better. though, im still not happy on this course, i feel miserable most of the time during terms.

is there anyone here who is in fashion illustration or took this course?

^I'm in my final year of fashion illustration.

The course was a huge let down for the first 2 years but it's become a lot better since the new course director came.
The only thing that still bothers me is that nobody seems to really be interested in fashion.

i overheard this girl on monday in the library talking about what i believe was the fashion illustration course. it sounded "negative" but whatever, right now im actually hoping for a course that would be easy as pie for me cause all i want is just to happily graduate. but saddly i cant, i called in today to the international office and im too late to transfer anywhere really, despite i really think i have the skills to even just randomly start in the second year. i realize that college isnt really for learning, just to go through with it so you say you got a degree. so why wouldnt i stick to something that i already know and is natural to me, drawing. :innocent:

you guys got new course director as well? a lot changed this year huh.

well, i suppose it's not that surprising. even for my course a lot of people in my class dont seems that into fashion neither. odd

I’m applying for Foundation Diploma in Art and Design course in LCF. I have received their email and they asked me for a portfolio. I’m really nervous. I don’t know how to start and what I have to include in my portfolio. I’m an international student and it’s hard for me to get some advices. Can anyone who completed this course give me some tips for my project? Sorry, it’s such a stupid question but I don’t know what the sketchbook is and how to do it. All things I can do is drawing, illustrating, design and then make it come to real garment, and photography. I really need your help. Thanks so much.

Foundation Course, Lcf

Has any one taken the art foundation course? how was the interview and is it hard to get in to?

i want to go to LCF but i need to take this course before i can take the womenswear course

Hi, I am currently doing the foundation course at LCF.

we started on the 21st september and then spent 2 weeks trying to get to know our classmates with some workshops such as exploring the area, etc.

then when the course really started, we would have to bring an object which would be the starting point of our development on our A3 sketchbook.

the course is based on 1.5 days of workshops where you get to do a bit of textiles/fabric manipulation and 3D, and then we have :
Photoshop/ Design Studio/ visual studies / cultural studies / Life Drawing.

We are all asked to write a reflective journal as well.

We are now gonna be starting a new project next Monday. Each student could either take FDT (Fashion), 3D, Fashion Image (photography, styling) or Textiles.

In my case, I took FDT because I am interested in doing womenswear next year.

So every student having taken the FDT workshop, will need to buy a men's jacket, cut it in halves and then deconstruct one half.
the purpose of this project is to study the different parts of a jacket and also, getting started into the womenswear/menswear/tayloring industry.

Our assessment will be from the 7th to the 11th December. During that week, my tutor will decide whether I can take the womenswear pathway or not.
the thing is, we are 400 people doing foundation in LCF. and even though not everybody will be taking that pathway, there will still be a good amount of people willing to do womenswear. that's why they will have to limit it into 90 places ( I think its 90, less than 100 at least).

Also, I would say you DO NEED to be amazing at drawing, and also at 3D.
Be aware, womenswear is all about playing with the shapes of the body so you need to be able to work in other dimension, be detailed, be everything really.

I hope this helped, Ana

Ana, thanks for the information about foundation! I was accepted to LCF for their art and design foundation for 2010 and your post helped me see what it would be like next year.

During your time on foundation, do you think the course promotes conceptual work or technical work, or both?

How often do you spend time at the mare st. campus? I'm thinking of applying to the Cordwainers Court housing later on but I don't know if I will spend time at other campuses during foundation.

Thanks for any help. :flower:

Wow. I'm applying for foundation diploma in art and design too! They asked me for my portfolio. But i really don't know what I should include in my portfolio, and what is the sketchbook. Sorry, It's such an stupid question because I'm international student, I don't know what an UK university requires of me? I really need your advice. Thanks so much.

There is a link posted above to the portfolio thread and I think you will find several LCF students have posted there.

to those who asked whether you need foundation to do fashion management: NO! At least not when I applied (and was accepted). I had literally zero fashion background (in fact, I have a poli.sci. background) except tFS and I was accepted on. However, I was very specific about which stream of fashion management I wanted to do, which I'm sure helps. You also do not need to submit a portfolio for fashion management.

Hi everyone, I'm considering a fashion journalism postgraduate course there next year. Does anyone have an opinions? I'd be very grateful for anything.
Attending a fashion media short course in April, which I'm very excited about!

I'm on the Fashion Management course. They are very lenient on international students like myself. Some of my classmates cannot even speak English! This will be bad for your first year specially if you're quite experienced already. Lessons are pretty basic so you might get bored. Learning will definitely come from your side as the course is predominantly independent learning. There are a few good tutors. What's great is the quality of resources they have for students.

Does fashion management need to take foundation course too?

You dont need to do a foundation for fashion management, to get in the entry tests are really easy and basic, but for your first and seccond year just make sure you know finance! (if youve done business studies already you should be fine)

Has anyone done the Fashion Womenswear course?
Can you tell me, is it practical based ( as in, making the clothing and textiles, pattern cutting/pinning, machining etc) or more paperwork based (drawing designs, doing research, etc)?
I know that some courses in fashion have the technicians make a lot of the clothing for you (i.e, the course at DMU) - is this the case here?
