^she said the alphabet is bopomofo, which is the pronunciation system used in taiwan. the pinyin alphabet is used to romanize standard chinese. she then gave a sentence to demonstrate the tones in chinese, falsely giving the impression that a tone change shifts the meaning of the word. in actuality, the tones are different because they correspond to different chinese characters (and there can be many characters with the same alphabetic spelling and tone). and of course she retorted that there are millions of characters. even if she was exaggerating, you only need about 5,000 for fluency.

i was just really surprised by all this since she was a chinese studies major in college. she literally allowed every backward stereotype one can have of mandarin. considering how many nyc schoolchildren are learning mandarin, all this mystification seems unwarranted.
