The real McQ
Alexander McQueen's new line shows his “edgier, rawer side”
June 26, 2006—The style set may be in Italy enjoying the Spring 2007 menswear shows, but it's not entirely a fashion blackout period for those of us stuck Stateside. For that we can thank the multitasking Alexander McQueen. Just as the designer unveils his signature collection today in Milan, his second line, McQ, will be making its debut in retail doors across America. Drawing inspiration from sources like 1960s biker gangs, Karlheinz Weinberger's photography, and Depression-era workwear, the collection combines what McQueen calls "street references with haute couture techniques."
"McQ gives me the opportunity to further expand the younger, edgier, and rawer side of my aesthetic," says the designer. "It's a rebellious version of the mainline McQueen collection." Coming from a man who sent a
burka down the runway for his top-tier line back in 2005, those are fighting words—ones he’s backing up with pieces like a black four-button cape and a flannel pullover with the sleeves torn off. Look beyond the theatrics, though, and a different story emerges: It's McQ's refined classics—plaid car coats (above), crinkled wool trousers in Prince of Wales check, and butter-soft cardigans—that will set cash registers ringing. And with price points starting at $150 for jeans and knitwear and topping out at $1,000 for a leather trench, it seems McQueen is embracing value as much as he does shock value.
McQ available at Barneys, Saks, and Neiman Marcus stores nationwide.
