Day 2Dress: Burberry
Leather Jacket: Express
Boots: Burberry
Bag: Alexander Wang
Necklace: Vintage
This Burberry dress was one of my favorite pieces from the fall/winter collections. I love the idea of a diaphanous, simple white dress anchored with a trench or leather jacket for fall. The boots (also Burberry) seem to elicit a fair amount of comments. It could be the proximity to Halloween, but my daughter calls them “Frankenstein boots.” I love the height they give me, but I stay away from the cobblestone streets of the Meatpacking District when wearing them.
I wear little leather jackets like they are cardigans. I have a closet full at all different price points (this one is Express) and to get them to mold to the perfect fit I machine wash and dry them. Sounds crazy, doesn’t it? I was just never totally happy with the fit (I like a very shrunken shape and skinny sleeve) so I took a risk with my Tracy Feith for Target version (it was the least expensive among them) and put it to the wash test and voila! The second-skin fit I was hoping for. It was a risk well worth taking.. And the necklace? That is a lucky flea-market find.
I love the anonymity of this Alexander Wang bag. The shape is so basic, and it’s only the gold stud hardware on the bottom that gives it away.
Day 3Blazer: Libertine
Blouse: Chloé
Shorts: Topshop
Boots: Balenciaga
Tights: Wolford
I have long loved Johnson Hartig’s quirky Libertine collection and his pieces have become staples in my closet. I was reminded of this jacket (bought in 2005) when Johnson rang to say he saw me wearing it in The September Issue. I love Johnson’s tailored but tattered aesthetic, and it’s such a good red.
I wore these leather Topshop shorts all summer long (with a French sailor striped T-shirt and gladiator sandals) and am now layering them with tights and boots for fall. Boots with shorts remind me (fondly) of Lea Thompson in the eighties film classic Some Kind of Wonderful.
Every fall, my best investment is several pairs of Wolford black matte opaque tights. They are the ideal shade of black and never run, pill or fade.
Day 4White shirt: Rag & Bone
Sailor pants: Topshop
Boots: Burberry
Necklace: Kenneth Jay Lane
Dilemma: How does one dress for an 8:00 a.m. parent/teacher nursery-school meeting followed by a day of appointments with fashion designers at Vogue? (Suffice it to say it’s best to leave the “Frankenstein boots” and leather shorts behind.) My solution: Stick with the classics.
I have many variations on the white shirt (like yesterday’s poet-style Chloé), and this oversize silk Rag & Bone is my new favorite. The sailor pants are from Kate Moss’s very first collaboration with Topshop, and at the fantastic price I didn’t expect them to hold up this long. I’m always drawn to bold gold jewelry, and this season I fell for Stephen Webster’s spiked gold ring and this blown-up gold chain-link necklace from Kenneth Jay Lane. (I accessorized after the parent teacher meeting.)
Day 5Trench: Gap
Shirt: Theory
Leggings: Alice + Olivia
Boots: Burberry
Bag: Chloé
Let it rain! I say this because I have a trench coat collection (Burberry, Derek Lam, Gryphon, John Patrick Organic) that rivals that of my leather jackets. This is a Gap trench (my assistant, Izzie, has the same one) and it’s fantastic.
I am wearing yet another white shirt, this one elongated and collarless (I sometimes wear it as a dress; it looks like vintage men’s pajamas). The leather leggings are something I put off buying for a long time. I assumed something that swept into fashion so quickly would exit just the same. And here I stand corrected, now the owner of three pairs (including Tory Burch and Rag & Bone) of this proven classic.
I am very keen on using a small bag for day. Trim the fat. This decorative version is from Chloé.

Dress: Marni
Boots: Brian Atwood
Friday arrives! More Libertine! Although you would never know it from the past four days of looks I am very fond of wearing print and color, especially an eclectic mix of patterns and embellishments like today’s Libertine skulls with Marni florals. Last season, I had to have these over-the-knee stretch suede Brian Atwood boots and ironically I tend to only wear them with below-the-knee dresses.
At Calvin Klein.
