No offense, but who cares... and I hate the woman vs. woman thing. Why must we do this to ourselves? /feminist rant :p

^i guess its always part of nature to have some sort of competition
anyways i really torn between the two ladies
:/
....

they both win :)

I don't think Carla Bruni can take risks due to her past and her reputation (ex: the nude photoshoots, the many lovers). Remember how scandalized the public was when Sarkozy got involved with her.

Understandably, Bruni goes for a more demure, conservative look in attempt to distance herself from her previous image. She almost has to make sure her outfits are as un-risky as possible.

whoa!!! carla is the ex-model, but michelle is the taller one!

i like both, as they show that prim and proper does not equal to frumpy or granny-ish. however, i like carla's style better. if only she wear a wee bit of heel....

Michelle wins, hands-down. It's not just the fact that she can take more risks, but also that she mixes designer pieces with J.Crew and other more democratically-priced lines.

They are both very classy ladies and I like them both but I love how Michelle wears alot of color^_^

Carla hands down. You can't beat the French. They are naturally chic, elegant and stylish.

carla for me. michelle does take more risks but that doesn't mean she necessarily has more style or that her style is better.

i think first ladies should be elegant, proper, chic and not try too hard.
i feel like michelle always tries too hard.
You voice my opinion. :flower:

I think they're so different in a way. Carla has more of a slick style, easy-Vogue, I call it.

Michelle has so much more of an original flow: her clothes don't define her, she defines her clothes.

With Carla I feel like, "Wow that's a nice dress, she looks gorgeous," but with Michelle I feel like, "Wow she is gorgeous and that's a nice dress."

If that makes any sense, haha.

I can't say I've ever seen any of Michelle's risky fashion choices, would anyone mind enlightening me.

"Risky" is a code word for Failed Attempts.

BTW, this thread is an insult to Carla Bruni.

I think the woman in green beats both of them LOL...I know she has a thread but I forget her name. Anyway she always looks fly...

That's first lady of Qatar, Sheikha. Love her fashion sense, she sure beats both Carla and Michelle.

I think 'risky' in the context of political or public figure, where the perception about FLOTUS is rigid. Definitely, not risky in the world of fashion or hollywood, where some of the things considered stylish would be laughable in mainstream America. In general Michelle Obama makes bold decisions with colors and those hit and miss big belts, hence why she's considered someone with a risky/edgy sense of style.

^^It would be great if Michelle showed up at an event in that blue ensemble...that would be daring for a first lady.

No offense but I feel that this thread is so irrelevant and trivial to both women.

Honestly, I don't think Michele Obama has a sense of style at all. But then again, the reason I like her is NOT because of her sense of style (or lack thereof), imo there are FAR more admirable qualities to her beyond the clothes she wears - such as her intelligence, her sense of humour, her public service and role as mother and first lady.

I simply don't get why our public figures of admiration also have to somehow be "style icons" as well. Isn't it enough just for them to achieve in their chosen fields? It's the same nonsensical attitude as when sport stars get picked on for their style, or politicians for their wardrobe. It makes no sense.

The the pitching of two public women against each other - even if its in a metaphoric/light hearted sense - why? Can't we just celebrate both women? Does there even need to be a competition?

What I find odd is that almost never are men placed in the same categories of comparison, ie. Bill Clinton vs. Obama - Who has more charisma? Or perhaps Sarkozy vs. Obama, who has more style?

Honestly, I feel that it undermines both women to be treated as such (ie. cultural symbols of something they are not even aiming to be - ie. style icons), and furthermore it undermines the supposed progressive, pro-gender equality attitudes of contemporary society to be continuing to hold an outdated view of women where they're objectified and placed as X vs. Y.

* Again, no offense meant, however the media treatment of women in public affairs (such as Michelle/Carla) is, imo, quite ridiculous and outdated. :flower:

ETA: Well given that this is a style forum, I concede I'm probably fighting a losing battle with my views. :ninja:

that's not why she's considered edgy, not for some (myself included) anyway.. I've recently come to appreciate her style as not even the most daring figure in the entertainment business would be willing to give small, independent designers a chance for exposure and Michelle does, she's not afraid of more forward talents such as Peter Pilotto, Isabel Toledo, Maria Cornejo, the list goes on.. I appreciate the style of any public figure who can finally value and project the industry of garments in such an intelligent and dignified manner.

Carla's style is.. nice.. it's camera-ready and highly conventional, which is only natural coming from someone that was a) a singer IN the entertainment business, b) a model for many years and c) a heiress of a known Italian company.. the fact that she knows her angles and what belt works with what color doesn't surprise me, surely it's nice to look at her, in the same way it's nice to look at any socialite into calculate dressing but that still doesn't cut it for me, I want to see expression in someone's style, not fear or a need for validation.

Regarding the existence of this thread and being a woman, supporter of what may be considered feminist views myself, I fail to find this thread offensive, most women I know (tFS members included) are smart just like these two, and just like these two dress every morning with what may be the same care, enthusiast and love for clothes but still manage not to be defined by them and their weight in society keeps being louder than their appearances, I also think that readers and contributors here can tell that this is only an internet private forum focused on fashion, not a history book teaching kids that's what women do only: wear dresses and heels. It's a lighthearted area it's not that hard to detect and enjoy if you take it for what it is.
