Michelle Obama

I love the prayer service dress. I think the colors and the style is gorgeous on her.
Oh, yes yes:flower:! She stood out,the dress was very warm, very pretty. And for the flats comments, whats wrong with flats?! She's got all the height a woman could want. She had a busy, busy, busy day before, screw trying to wear heels all the time. She was in a place of prayer not a fashion show, jokes. Some women looove flats and I'm one of them.

I don't know if its been mentioned but Michelle has a really cool feature in the new issue of Town & Country Magazine(February):flower:.

I  the Sonia Rykiel coat!

That ring she wore to the ball is to die for!! :woot:

She looked very pretty at the prayer service. Tracy Feith must have been estatic! I love how she's not sticking to one mainstream designer like others have done in the past. She's supporting these up-and-coming / relatively unknown (outside of the fashion industry) designers, thus giving them tons of free publicity.

Isabel Toledo, Of Michelle Obama's Inauguration Dress Fame, Talks To PaperMag. By Kim Hastreiter

We here at PAPERMAG were overcome with emotion during the inauguration, not only because it was such a historical and groundbreaking political moment, but because Michelle Obama was wearing a dress and coat combo designed by our dear friend designer Isabel Toledo! In the wake of hysteria generated by the dress, we asked Isabel a few questions.

How did you find out that Michelle Obama was going to wear your look?

We found out the same way, along with everyone else in the world. I do think that I absorbed the wave of energy felt by everybody at the same time and that made the impact that much bigger -- like an electric shock!

So tell me about the dress.

It is made of wool lace and lined in silk netting with little secret pashmina tulle layers for warmth and lightness -- I call the color lemongrass, to express an emotion more than a color. The textile reminds me of floating islands connected by a common thread. The empty space gave me the ability to play with the illusion of light escaping from beneath. I love colors that are hard to describe because everyone can own it. To some it's sunflower, corn husk, gold, mustard or sunshine. It's a tone that depends on the observer and is affected by the light.

How would you describe Michelle Obama's natural style?

Michelle has the grace of Mother Nature. Her style is regal and down to earth. She inspires confidence. Her style is open and bold and brave -- those are qualities that I like to cut in my clothes.

How did she learn about your designs?

She first learned about my clothes from Ikram, the woman who has become our fashion ambassador in Chicago, one of the best dressed cities in the world, due to a fantastically groovy-chic group of smart professonal women who really know and wear clothes well.

Why do you think Michelle relates to your work?

It's all about the realness, what it means to be a woman and wear fashion with a purpose. To wear innovation and inventions that can elevate your life, this is why fashion was invented in the first place. It's not about the label -- it's about ideas.

How did you feel her look held up after all those hours wearing it? She went to Church, then to the inauguration, had a luncheon with Congress, then drove and walked to the White House and watched a two-hour-long parade. And it still looked flawless!

Michelle wore it well! With style, grace and ease. And the fact that it kept her warm enough not to shiver for ten hours outdoors made us happy!

In President Obama's first scheduled event of the day, he traveled to the National Cathedral for an interfaith prayer service that was also attended by Vice President Biden and former President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, who all shared a front pew - January 22, 2009:

one of the few first ladies with a personal sense of style...

Kamelot please remember to add space inbetween images - Without space between the pictures the page setup will be elongated and reading/viewing pictures will involve a lot of scrolling (for all those viewing the page with Internet Explorer).

From rodeo.net/agnes-b quotes via Wall Street Journal and Teen Vogue

Jason Wu on 'the dress':
"I just dropped everything and jumped up and down and screamed. This can’t be replicated – it will never appear in any form in my collection. It has to be special.

I've been on pins and needles for two months. I flew to Chicago with the dress over Thanksgiving. I was like, I'm delivering this myself! I didn't want anyone else touching it! But I really didn't know she'd be wearing it until I saw her on tv last night, just like everyone else. I dropped everything when she walked out. And, yes, I did cry a little bit. It's an incredible moment for me, but also for this country.

In terms of design, my only instruction was that the dress needed to sparkle, which I hope it did. It had about a million Swarovski crystals on it! I know it sounds corny, but I had this vision of the dress immediately. I knew it had to be white. I wanted it to be romantic, strong, energetic--everything Michelle Obama stands for.

I barely got any sleep last night, and I've been non-stop since 6:30 this morning. My parents are in Taiwan, where there's a thirteen hour time difference, and they called me five minutes after it happened last night. That's how crazy this is. The whole world is watching!"

What's with the photo of Queen Latifah?

I  Bill Clinton in those church photos.

And Michelle's perfect skin tone and pearly whites...TDF. And she comes across as such an impressionable mother...love the photo of her fixing Malia's shoe.

Fashion's copycats are having a ball knocking off Michelle Obama's gown

Braganti for News Designers Shala and Paul Moradi of Faviana cut out flowers that mimic the embellishments on Michelle Obama's Jason Wu gown.

Braganti for News Shala Moradi shows a sketch of the dress Michele Obama wore to the inaugural balls.

The two dresses Michelle Obama donned on Inauguration Day drew as much attention as her husband’s speech. And in just weeks, every woman in American will be able to wear the looks the First Lady made famous.
Michelle had barely danced at her first ball as First Lady by the time designers at the Manhattan-based Faviana had drawn up sketches for their inauguration-inspired gowns.
“When we came to work this morning, we were already looking at fabrics, trimmings, and detailing, and we started working on the patterns and putting the dress together,” Omid Moradi, CEO of the family-owned fashion house, said yesterday.
The brand is famous for reinterpreting gowns that have been seen on celebrities like Jennifer Lopez, Sarah Jessica Parker and Miley Cyrus, and the knockoffs are a favorite of the prom crowd. But Obama’s powerful position and appeal may make these their biggest sellers yet.
Faviana is reinterpreting both the Isabel Toledo lemon-grass yellow lace dress and coat Michelle wore during the swearing-in ceremony, and the white one-shoulder chiffon gown by Jason Wu that wowed at the evening’s events.
The Faviana version of the day dress and jacket will retail for $450, while the evening column look will sell for under $400.
Moradi suspects the white gown will garner enormous interest. “I think a lot of people are going to be interested in this dress,” he says. “This is a huge thing for the country and for fashion, so we’re watching what the First Lady’s wearing very closely and she’s going to be a trendsetter for years to come.”
Faviana’s dress won’t be an exact replica of what the First Lady wore. “Our version will be a one shoulder, but we felt that the dress had a lot of gathering around the hip area, so ours is going to have less of that,” Moradi says. “We will do our own detail on the dresses, as far as the flowers and the rhinestones are concerned. Of course, it would be made to our specifications, our patterns.”
Expect to see the two looks in stores in four to six weeks as part of an entire Mrs. O-inspired collection.
Not stopping with just the looks from Inauguration Day, Faviana’s also making dresses the First Lady wore during key moments of the campaign, including the Maria Pinto floral-patterned halter gown she wore to the NAACP awards, and the white taffeta ball gown and matching shawl for Oprah’s Legends Ball.
A.B.S, Allen B. Schwartz’s line, is also planning to do a version of the First Lady’s inaugural ball gown, most likely taking one of the gowns he’s designed already and making it in ivory.
“A dress like that on the A.B.S. line would be about $300 retail,” Schwartz says. “It could be in department stores anytime in March or April.
“I think Michelle Obama will do more for the fashion business than any other First Lady because she’s a modern woman and has a different style sensibility,” he adds. “And I think every salesperson, every manufacturer, every retailer will want to look and see that they have one-shoulder dresses because of the exposure her dress had last night.”

Michelle Obama's make-up artist, Ingrid Grimes-Myles, says: 'Mrs Obama's look is not an avant-garde look. She's a professional woman. Natural and polished.'
EYES: Michelle wore Jet black eyeliner by Bloom Cosmetics and Mineral Essence mineral eye shadow in merlot with lashings of black mascara.
TRY: Clinique high impact curling mascara and Bobbi Brown long-wear gel eyeliner in black ink.

LIPS: She wore Paula Dorf lip colour sheer tint in innocence. The colour is ideal for anyone who prefers a soft, natural look. Ingrid once let it slip to the Chicago Tribune that 'Michelle Obama is a fan of Mac Cosmetics.'

TRY: Mac lip pencil in mahogany, Mac lipstick in creme d'nude and lustre lipgloss in love nectar.

CHEEKS: Ingrid says: 'For women of colour, they don't really need blush. You should add it where you naturally blush.' She used Laura Geller blush and brighten.

TRY: Bare Minerals blush in hint.

BROWS: Perfectly arched eyebrows achieved with Tweezerman tweezers, brow powders and pencils.

TRY: Rimmel professional eyebrow pencil in hazel.
HAIR: Rahni Flowers, owner of Van Cleef Hair Studio in Chicago, has been Obama's hair stylist for 18 years. His lips are sealed over what products she uses, but he has created her bob by layering it, blowdrying it straight and using a light holding spray.

NAILS: Michelle's favourite nail shape is a short, clean corporate length in pink.
TRY: Essie nail varnish in allure.

I'm glad Michelle is rocking new designers and not going with the same old thing as other first ladies. I loved her Jason Wu ball gown although I did not care for the matronly inauguration number.

What's Oscar De La Renta going to do with himself the next 4 years or so:innocent:

There's still Hillary  And all those women who showed up at the White House wearing Laura Bush's dress ... bet that doesn't happen again :p
