I saw Malena the other day (with no subtitles so no real comprehension) but i'm truly tired of seeing her naked or near naked all the time. Of course her beauty probably works against her.
I'm not sure if I understood correctly, so please forgive me if I'm wrong, but from what I'm reading here (and in a few other places in this thread), some people think she's beautiful and that's about it. I've also heard about some people questioning her acting abilities, and I have to say something: I've seen almost every movie she's ever been in (not just because I love her, but because I'm obsessed with foreign films) and she really is a wonderful actress.
She's incredibly smart (she speaks 4,5 languages fluently, including Persian) and very self-aware. Someone mentioned they couldnt understand what it is about pregnant women posing naked, and I cant speak for Britney Spears or Demi Moore, but Monica did it in protest of Italian laws that prohibit in-vitro fertilization for non-married individuals and also in protest of their laws against using donor sperm. I think that speaks volumes about her motivations - she knew a naked-pregnant spread would garner publicity and cause an uproar and attention to an issue usually ignored by others.
Also, yes, she's naked in a LOT of her pictures, I agree. In fact, in most of them, she's near/half/completely naked. And while that does get tiresome, I also applaud it. She's been known to say that she's not a stick figure, and she refuses to comply with international standards of skinniness. She's proud of her body and in showing it off, I think she does a great service to the rest of us who are ashamed of being voluptuous. She's also, since the start of her career, been very comfortable with nudity- so she's often the one people go to for "sexy/shocking" spreads. Keep in mind, also, that in Europe, sexuality and nudity are not viewed with the same conservatism that we find here in the US. And one more thing, I think it's great that as she's aged, she continues to model in this way - it just shows she's not ashamed of how her body and face are changing, and she's embracing them. Rather than get sick of her, I kind of embrace her ideal.
Oh, and on another note, more times than not, I dislike her outfits - while some look stunning on her, often, I find her wearing things that I find tacky. Just a disclaimer so that everyone knows I'm not biased to loving her.

I don't believe just looking what criticizing the use in nudity in cinema per se but rather the use of nudity as a substitute for quality script or direction.luvmelots1983 said:

I think she is an average actress and has a tiny range, but when well directed (as in Malena), she's a delight.

I agree. Why do people tend to say that beautiful woman cannot be clever?
Is there any study that proved that?

On a side note, has anyone seen the French movie Irreversible?

I have seen it. She plays the same character she plays in every of her movies (save for Agent Secrets), with a slight nuance. One could argue that she actually hardly plays at all in it. However, it doesn't take from the movie in this case. I absolutely adored it, but it was more for the direction and the screenplay than the actual acting.luvmelots1983 said:

My issue with Monica is that she doesn't always choose her movies well. Her top performances so far were in Asterix as Cleopatra, Malena and L'Appartement (the original Wicker Park). I haven't seen The Passion though. Was she any good?
