Most controversial designer

I don't know if there's any controversial designer today. Does that word still exist?

I guess I would say John Galliano because of all his army themes and that seems to bug some people...

i didn't see anything controversial about cdg....just call me shallow.....i'm sick of cdg trying hard to be artistic and in the end, everything is the same old moody collections...

I agree with you. I dont understand when people try to put deep meaning into clothes or make it more than what it is. They're just pretty things to wear!

Kind of hard to say, I don't know that there is anyone working today who is consistently controversial in the true sense of the word. Maybe it's because we've seen it all?

Marc Jacobs comes to mind, as does Galliano but those are more in terms of fan reaction than actually doing something truly controversial (though John had that homeless couture collection back in 2000 which really was controversial)

True controversy in design though is really rare. McQueen used to hold the title, but he's softened his edge in the last 6 or 7 years.

This season, MJ for sure ... remember Galliano's "freak" show? Now *that* discussion was interesting Totally a mirror to everyone's psyche and belief system ...

I think controversy its a flavor-of-the-month thing .. I remember when there was all the hype about Arkadius and Jeremy Scott ... and where are they know???

I think most if not all have had their moments ... Gabrielle and her pants, CD and his bathtub interview, YSL and his naked ad ...

I'ts kinda odd how little Miuccia has been brought up here. After seeing the latest Prada thread, she may earn the top position as 'most controversial designer'...

i'd btw say gareth pugh. vivienne used to be very controversial, but not so much today. i don't get all the people saying marc jacobs.. i guess JPG is quite.. hmm. yeah.

I suggest you have a look at his latest collection and all the reviews, or read the comments in the thread in this forum.

You'll see that it was very controversial. The most talked about to say the least.

And may I add, that although I'm all for breaking taboos and all that.. I don't necessarily think that controversy is a good thing. Hype Hype Hype

I don't think Vivienne Westwood is being controversial at this moment. Politically-active, yes, but shocking and mindblowing.... Ehm..... Not really

I'd say Marc Jacobs, for openly quoting and recycling other designer's (well-known) ideas. I find that quite controversial. And I was surprised that he admitted it.

Nowadays John Galliano and McQueen don't shock me anymore. Sometimes I'm surprised but that doesn't happen very often anymore.

Tom Ford is still quite the controversial character, just look at his new ad-campaign or the immense high prices at his shop. Seriously shocking!!!!!!!

i think i get what you mean ilaughead... your post made me reconsider this "controversial" thing, and i realized that at the end, the designers who really are controversial are the ones who are not supposed to be.

we can't say gareth pugh is controversial, or cdg... because that is in a way, predictable or in other words "not controversial".
prada, jacobs, balenciaga... those are the ones who we expect to be the most mainstream and comercial, and when they show their unwearable monstrosities (which i love and adore) we all go crazy and discuss about them, or in other words "they cause controversy"

I think you have to look at more than the clothing and references made by a designer to determine whether or not a designer is controversial. It seems that many people don't see how Marc Jacobs and Miuccia Prada are controversial, and I felt the same way when I first saw their names in this thread until I really started to think about it. They strike up so much controversy as far as their designs go because of the fact that many people consider them to be two of the greatest copy cats ( for lack of a better term ) in the industry. I myself love Miuccia, and don't really see how her designs are considered plagiarism, but it's the fact that it brings up so much heated discussion that makes her controversial. Also, the fact that certain designers/collections ( Prada, Marc Jacobs, Balenciaga, Proneza Schouler ) are always regarded as being genius and ideal, leads many to question the fashion industry as a whole. Is it the design and creativity that's getting all of this positve attention, or have some of these designers become fashion monopoly's? I personally found Marc Jacobs' last spring collection to be utter sh*t, but once again it's one of Vogue's top ten collections. Many people question this collection being regarded as innovative and beautiful and that in itself is controversial.


Anyway, I myself find Galliano to be the most controversial ( let's count how many times I've used that word ) designer. It's not just the fact that his collections depict the homeless, blatantly sex/vulgar women, and morbid depictions of death, but many criticize his attitude towards women in general. Previous Galliano threads always include one or two people who think he views women only as sex objects and that he promotes sexism. Oh and let's not get into designers and fur...sex and copy cats is enough for now
