Muse #29 Spring 2012 : Kate Upton

i see no problem with Kate's editorial.
as far as "class" goes, Izabel is showing way more trashy/classless/really unfortunate photography....at least Kate got some good photography in there....Izabel's looks so out of place. and just....cheesecake.

Kate Upton, eh? hmm ... i honestly just couldn't have predicted that this girl would EXPLODE the way she has. but there ya go.

either way - i'm loving it. it's so refreshing to see a model on the cover of a magazine who doesn't have severe cheekbones and an intense stare. Kate is different.

and for all of you saying that she's so "run-of-the-mill" and "normal" and such ... um ... i think that's sheer lunacy. she might not be to your taste - but you'd be hard pressed to find someone with those proportions and that face just kickin' around your local coffee shop.

i do, however, COMPLETELY agree that i've seen these kinds of shots with these types of models many times before. perhaps not on a proper fashion magazine, but certainly elsewhere. so - in order to truly make her interesting, the stylists and photographers are gonna have to come up with different concepts that challenge her as a model, but still maintain that bombshell style.

this girl is gonna be BIG though. not high fashion big (i'd be seriously shocked), but she's gonna be an incredibly successful commercial supermodel. i can feel it.

People defending Kate's cover and editorial because, for them, this represents "feminity" clearly "reject diverse types of beauty" themselves. This girl is not more feminine than other women, and this editorial does not represent feminity better than Aymeline's does. I know this is how a lot of people picture women and feminity : "softness", baby face, big breast, seductive poses, Marylin Monroe, etc... Not that I dislike this but this is an old cliché, so not exactly THE truth.

I believe you are misconstruing some comments. I don't think anyone has used the words "masculine" or "feminine" here to imply that anyone is less of a woman. We are simply using those terms as shorthand for features that are more typical in men versus women, for instance strong jaw lines are common with androgen development.

I think that it is hilarious that Kate Upton, and by extension the photographers and editors who are working with her, are being criticized for doing eds that leverage her type. Since when do major fashion photographers, editors and designers not go for the obvious, especially when it comes to a new-ish face? How many eds and campaigns have Natalia, Freja, Lara, Lindsey, Daria, Gisele and others done that were variations on two or three themes / types that were obviously tied to their looks and physiques before they branched out? How many eds or campaigns have Mert and Marcus done that were saturated colors, blue or red backgrounds, models with bleached brows? How many rock chick eds appear in French Vogue? How many storytelling eds appear in American Vogue? How many dark and moody eds appear in Vogue Italia? My prediction is that Kate Upton's print work for the foreseeable future is going to be of the bombshell, girl having fun, pseudo-catalogue or sporty variety, and if it plays out that way, then as such, the modeling work that plays to her looks and physique means that Kate Upton will be following in the footsteps of the hundreds, if not thousands, of high fashion, commercial and celebrity models that have gone before her.

i actually like her cover, the styling and photo are bland and obvious but she still shine sin the ed, cant wait to see more from her she is a strong contender for supermodel since shes easily marketable to the masses

Hmm...looks like Muse is becoming more and more like a guy's magazine than fashion. I remember when they had really great editorials, now it is more about T and A.
