Myspace Style Appreciation Thread

These Cobrasnake/scene/myspace girls all sort of merge into one for me, Im afraid. They all seem to be rich daddy girls who don't do anything except photograph themselves in "ironic" outfits. It started out as cute at first but it's a bit tiresome when you see the 'nth girl wearing a vintage dress and big 80's glasses hanging off the arm of some very beardy bloke.
Yes, I agree, though this thread is suprisingly good for me--I was expecting a myriad of random girls with blonde hair & dark roots wearing bright MAC eyeshadows. However, this girl has a depth to her that I found wholly lacking in the Scene thread & especially with this Cory Kennedy girl (perhaps it's the age/maturity?). Her photography has a whimsical, purposely amateurish quality (no doubt being able to intern with someone brilliant helps!) that is rather intriguing which helps in not being not being another 'scene girl'. I don't know her, so I'll withhold judgement in personality. As with the hipster trend, which I am guilty of  (I dream of being a Beat poet, ha!). But they more or less move on to whatever is the new hot thing. That keeps me content without wanting to shake their pretty faces off.

i agree with some of the people here..
this girl does nothing special for me. in the very first post of this thread it says that neither she's famous, or her parents are ...but what about her friends or the people she hangs out with?
anyways, like it's been said before, she seems pretty privileged. and by that i mean she gets access to designer stuff or even three of the most interesting cities out there, culturally speaking. and yeah, to me being 'stylish' when you can buy designer pieces, it's kind of easier. :ninja: not because of the brand, but because of the queality and desing.

I don't think there should be threads for individuals in Streetstyle. To me, streetstyle is all about celebrating the style of anonymous individuals. Not knowing anything about the person in the photo allows the viewer to focus solely on the clothes, accessories and styling -- not how much money the person has, how well-connected their daddy is, or what sort of semi-famous folks they hang out with.

i couldn't agree with you more....streetstyle is streetstyle, the myspace voyeurism should stay on myspace. i dont use my myspace crap here, it's totally different things and i agree with meg that they should stay that way. i'd rather not know what so and so wore to prom and all of that....

Thanks static! You people! If you don''t like her style, don't visit this thread. It's so boring to read post after post about stuff that doen not relate to what this thread is about....style! Give me a break already.

Thanks to everyone for clarifying...:flower:

Like I said earlier, I do understand how a sub-forum could get wildly out of hand. I have to agree with the sentiment that many of these people are undeserving of the kind of fame and press that they have received, and they certainly don't need to be singled out any more so. As Meg said, we should go and love up these kinds of people on their respective sites.

I would like to know, though, where I could post images of the kind of person that I mentioned in my previous post. In the case of the person that I am thinking of, most of the pictures I have of her do NOT come from myspace or similar sites, so it wouldn't make sense to put her on this thread. (As a side note, I would like to say that this person is in her late twenties and is an accomplished working professional--so she is hardly one of the privileged teenaged brats that we tend to think are typical of the MySpace/cobrasnake generation.) I also think it would be weird to create a "[Insert City/State name here] Streetstyle" thread, only to post 70 photos of HER singular style. It would also be incredibly inappropriate to place her in the Star Style thread, as she is not a national/international celebrity.

I guess I should also note that I am in no way trying to promote this person....she is hardly a friend of mine....but I think she has EARNED her way and singling her out would not be totally undeserved....and I just want to share her cool style with you guys!! :flower: I'm not saying I'll post images right away...but I do want to know my options for when I do and for other people who may be in the same situation. ^_^

It says you are in Boston.....if there is no Boston based street style thread please feel free to create one. Other boston based tfsers may then add from various sources. We have one thread on LA Street Style and one on Echo Park East Side LA street style so things can be as general or specific and you may find once starting such a thread others will find internet sites with other Boston based style :flower:

Thanks, Meg! I guess for the time being, that's the way to go...:flower:

Incidentally, the girl was from my OTHER hometown....HONOLULU!!:heart: So maybe a Hawaii Streetstyle thread is in order...:innocent:

I'll stay on thread subject from now on...:p

yes that sounds really interesting dreamecho - please go ahead. Sounds like we need one.

^ not sure about that....most people in hawaii dress pretty bland/mainstream.

New Site

Here is a link to a site that I set up on Harley Newton. http://community.livejournal.com/heavenly_harley/ for people who appreciate her style - since posting on tfs about Harley seems to be akin to bringing the world to an end.

But on a serious note,I believe everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I can respect that but I've found myself taken aback at the harsh comments and bullyish remarks made on this thread. I didn't think tfs found this type of behaviour acceptable...

I'm not a fan of Paris Hilton but I do not waste my time posting intimidating posts on her thread to antagonise members who do like her style. And unfortunately some MODS have found it difficult to focus the thread on the talk of style, but instead seem to be discriminative about a person because they are "rich" or "well-connected" and it's created a very nasty atmosphere in which some people feel unable to post as they might be attacked and that isn't how a thread should be, no matter what view point you may have.

The internet is changing things, and in a way these blogs and myspaces are democratizing style. Before we only really had "celebrities" who were a focal point when it came to style and trendsetting, as they were universally featured in magazines and tv - someone in Korea will know Kate Moss, just as much as someone in Germany.

Now the internet allows anyone, with a computer and a camera, to show their style to the whole world. No they aren't famous, but style is not exclusive to celebrities. And why should that not be celebrated? Why should the media dictate what/who the masses should be looking to for inspiration? Why can't we turn around to each other and say I really admire your style?

I often see tfs not only as a place to appreciate "style icons" that I admire with other members, but it's also a place to discover new "style icons" that I may never have come across otherwise. To share.

It was perhaps too soon to start a thread on one of these "internet" stars,(although there are threads on similar people in the star style section - namely cory kennedy:ninja: ), but something will have to give soon here, you can tell just by the strong discussion the thread has started and by the huge hits it has received in such a short space of time.

I hope that makes sense, as I've had a long day and am extremely tired...

Although I feel like a... style stalker... I adore searching MySpace for style inspiration. As a girl from a country town, street style consists of camo and hunting boots, so MySpace is my own little slice of "e-street style." ;)

that's a good idea Karina. Thanks for all the fab threads you've started here. :flower:

as an afterthought after reading many of these comments,

is it so very bad to be privelidged and to have connections? it it rather hypocritical of many people bashing Harley for her style saying "oh it's only because she can afford it and she has connections".

lets think about the various other fashionistas admired. Julia-Restoin-Roitfeld: famous editor's daughter. Margherita Missoni: designer's daughter. Tinsley Mortimer: privelidged socialite. Nan Kempner: born into wealth, married into wealth. Sohpia Coppola: famous director's daughter. Gweneth Paltrow: famous actor/director parents. Lydia Hearst: Publishing family

nespotism is everywhere.

at least Harley Newton isn't a media-wh*re, i almost wish she had never been "discovered" theres certainly been no sign of her desiring fame or self promoting.
