I want to have babies, says Naomi
Naomi Campbell spoke of her desire to have children as she announced a fashion show to raise money to prevent women dying in pregnancy today.
The supermodel, 38, said she had been unable to conceive before she underwent an operation in Brazil earlier this year. Campbell has teamed up with the Prime Minister’s wife, Sarah Brown, to raise funds for the White Ribbon Alliance, to save the lives of pregnant women and newborn babies around the world. Gordon Brown and his wife, who is patron of the charity, lost their first child, Jennifer, just ten days after she was born, seven weeks early, in late 2001. Campbell hopes to persuade the likes of Kate Moss and Victoria Beckham to grace the catwalk to raise money for the White Ribbon Alliance. Last year, her Fashion For Relief event made over £1m for victims of the floods and saw Princess Beatrice and her mother the Duchess of York model for the event. The model, who is to undergo 200 hours community service as punishment for assaulting police officers on a plane at Heathrow Airport in a row over lost luggage, said at the launch of the fashion event today: “As a woman myself that wants to have kids it’s a given that I’d want to be involved in something like this. “I love children. Giving birth is bringing a new energy into the world.” Campbell underwent a mystery operation to remove a cyst in a hospital in Brazil earlier this year. She revealed today: “Until March, I wasn’t able to have kids. Now I can. They thought it was a cyst. When they opened it up they realised it was more. “I was not able to have children up until March. Now it’s in God’s hands. I would love to have a family but it’s up to God. “I do want to have kids. I’m 38 years old. “In my mind, I knew there was something wrong. It wasn’t until I got to hospital and they opened me up and found that I couldn’t. I felt that I couldn’t. You have to listen to your body. “I’m happy that I got to hospital when I did. If I’d left it for three more months there would have been problems. I was unblocked.” Campbell, who has been linked to Russian property billionaire Vladislav Doronin, added: “Hopefully I’ll have one in the normal way. I’m not single but there’s no pressure on the person I’m with either. I could have a baby on my own. I’m blessed financially. “I will be a strict mother. I love children and get on with kids very well. I’m very childlike.” The Streatham-born model said that she was approached by Number 10 Downing Street about the White Ribbon Alliance before what she called “the BA episode”. She said: “Things happen to me but it doesn’t stop me from doing what I’m going to do. I don’t believe in just grumbling. I’m going to do my community service. “I’m a controversial girl. I learn my lessons. I’m not someone that wallows in self-pity. I don’t want pity either. What makes me sleep at night is what I do with a good conscience.” Mrs Brown said in a written statement: “Every minute around the world a woman dies in pregnancy – this hasn’t changed for 20 years – now the world is coming together to put an end to these shameful and needless deaths. “We have the knowledge of how to do this, but we need the will to make change happen. Everyone from whatever walk of life has a part to play in making sure that no mother needs to die giving birth.” Fashion for Relief, featuring designers Jaeger, Alexander McQueen, Dolce and Gabbana and Vivienne Westwood, will take place at London Fashion Week on September 17.
