MARKS & SPENCER yesterday played down fears it will suffer if design guru George Davies quits.
Mr Davies, who created the best-selling Per Una range for M&S, is expected to leave when his contract expires in the autumn.
But M&S chief executive, Stuart Rose, indicated there was life after Mr Davies.
He said: “It’s not Marks & Davies or Marks & Rose — it’s Marks & Spencer and we’ve got seventy-odd thousand people working here. I’m sure we’ll come to an agreement.
“George is most welcome, he’s a great asset to the business and he’s great fun to be with, but he’s a man in his mid-60s now who has clearly got to think about his future.” Mr Rose’s reaction contrasts hugely with what happened when Mr Davies threatened to leave two years ago.
On that occasion, he persuaded Mr Davies to withdraw his resignation, later describing a disagreement with the designer as a ‘lovers’ tiff’.

With her luscious corkscrew curls and perfect complexion, Noemie Lenoir has become the most talked about poster girl of 2006.

But now, following a brutal trip to the barbers, the 27-year-old Marks & Spencer billboard star is barely recognisable.
The French model, who has shaved off all her hair for a role in the movie Rush Hour III, revealed her new look during a break from filming.
Chatting on a mobile phone to her Chelsea footballer boyfriend Claude Makelele, Miss Lenoir looked at ease with her new, no-holds barred 'grade one' crew cut.
Wearing a navy blue and white vest top teamed with a chunky gold necklace, the M & S model chatted to the French player for half an hour before re-joining the rest of the cast.
The mother of one, whose son Kelyan was born in February last year, adorned giant posters nationwide, wearing just her bra and knickers. The campaign boosted M&S lingerie sales by 20 per cent and was one of the key factors behind the company's recent revival.
Miss Lenoir, the daughter of a Madagascan mother and French father, was also part of the company's phenomenally successful marketing campaign featuring Twiggy, Laura Bailey and Erin O'Connor.
A 30-second TV commercial starring the four women saw womenswear sales jump up nearly 10 per cent in the first three months.
The ¡ê35 pair of black and white tie court shoes that Miss Lenoir wore became the subject of frenzied weblogs on teenage fashion sites, while her swimsuit flew out of stores within its first week of going on sale. Until this year, the model and actress was largely unknown in Britain. She is, however, hugely successful in the US and Europe, where she has appeared in campaigns for Gap, Tommy Hilfiger, Gucci, Victoria's Secret and L'Oreal.

Variety reports that Noemie Lenoir has been cast as Chris Tucker's romantic interest in "Rush Hour 3." Max von Sydow and Hiroyuki Sanada have also been tapped to co-star in the feature.
Brett Ratner will once again be directing Tucker and Jackie Chan in the third installment of the "Rush Hour" franchise for New Line Cinema.
Shooting is set to begin in Paris where the two cops will be battling a Chinese organized crime family.
