Numéro #251 February 2025 : Yseult by Jean-Baptiste Mondino

I've always liked Numéro, but lately the covers have become quite repetitive and some editorials inside are always better than the cover!

Ugly hairstyle...hopefully there will be more covers...

A directive to have her turn her opposing shoulder closer to the camera would've been helpful; there's an angularity that reads oddly with this type of composition. I love this quality of B&W and the hair I don't mind. Glam hit in the right ways.

Excited to see the main editorial for this cover shoot. Happy to see her on the cover.

The other cover is a model in a SL suit, shot by Yulia Gorbachenko.

After the superior Dec/Jan retrospective issue that reminded everyone how great Numero France can be, this issue is n absolute letdown. It's very ragtag late-2000s sensibility with the noir fashion alien of the Rick Owens and Gareth Pugh kind, and indie desktop publisher aesthetic. There’s a decent story set on the streets of Paris by Boris Camaca but unfortunately the exaggerated modelling and thumbnail layout ruins an otherwise stylish shoot. And a cute story by Szilvester Mako with models as illustrations if that’s your thing, but it’s annoying to me. The other stories are just too dated and desktop publishing for my preference.

Numéro is respectable and I don't think it's a magazine that is speaking down to its audience or pretending to be something it's not, but it's just lacking spice or something. In particular, I think that the covers are very static. It's missing something that wants me to look once, let alone twice.

I think the obvious reason is that Babeth is in her safe zone era. Numéro was one exciting title because of her taste in art, her sharp eyes in photography. She used to discover new and exciting new talent photographers, and she actually challenges her long-time collaborators. But now it's mostly Mondino on his autopilot mode.

Numéro will always be good because Babeth will never lower her standards just because the industry has lower it, but it just not an exciting title it once was.

RÊVERIE SOLITAIRE is the best and most achieved story in the issue.
I like Yseult but the Saint Laurent cover is more striking.
Excercice de style is also good.

I love Dominique Issermann but I don’t feel like the best shots were chosen for her story.

The rest is very weird. If the concept and photography is good, then the model is terrible. If the model is good, it’s the photography and styling that are lackluster.
