OCM - *oil cleansing method

I feel a little stupid asking this, but where do you get the oils from? Do you buy them in a regular super-market or at a pharmacy? And I also think the quality of oils, even of the same kind, varies a lot, doesn't it? So how do know which oils to use?

Dont use boiling water on your skin-ever! That's really drying, and extremely cold water is shocking, so a tepid water temp (somewhere in the middle) is best.

I suggest just purchasing the Dermalogica PreCleanse if you want to try this method, to be mixing up different oils yourself at home, if you dont know what you are doing, you could end up really adding too much to your skin and could potentially damage it. Plus anyone with super sensitive skin or 'sensitized' skin that cant tolerate much, this probably wouldnt be for you. Sensitive skin can be further irritated by oils and 'natural' skincare which is usually chock-full of essential oils from plants and/or flowers.

I totally forgot about OCM so I did it today after a loooong time. How many times a week/month is doing this recommended?

Follow-Up Comment

Thanks for this thread I <3 Chanel! I've been taking extra virgin coconut oil internally this month and it's been awesome at helping me curb my cravings and reduce my portions. After reading this I started the OCM with my coconut oil 2 nights ago and my skin feels really soft and supple.

My skin is oily and acne-prone and this hasn't made me break out at all. I followed up with my tea tree oil toner from The Body Shop coz I felt like I still had oil after wiping with the washcloth. I love that my skin doesn't feel stripped and dry like it does on my Rx cleanser but I have to get used to the oil is great or oily skin thing. I can't wait to see how it will look in a month/6! I'm hoping it will help with my cell renewal/acne scars too.

After about a week...this OCM made me break out...A LOT!!! I did some research online and found out that a lot of people have the same experience. The skin is "purging" but I discontinued it because my cystic acne almost always leaves scars. I'm back to alternating between my Rx cleanser and The Body Shop Tea Tree Oil Cleansing Gel. I will also be getting Tazorac to use nightly from the doctor soon. I'm also going to continue taking coconut oil internally.

Best wishes to all those trying this out. It's a NO for my acne-prone skin.

Can I just use cooking oil?

Doesn't rubbing oil onto your face make your face more oily? I don't understand the chemistry behind this. It's like rubbing a ton of dirt&grime onto your face.

^^No, No, NO!

I really dont have much experience with this except using the Dermalogica PreCleanse, and its purpose is to lift off makeup and that grime so your face is more 'accepting' to your normal cleanser, be it a foaming one, a milky emulsion, etc.

I just did a lot of reading about the OCM and will start the routine tonight (after hitting the market for my oils, of course).

Almost all of the sites I read recommended a mix of 20% castor oil and 80% Sunflower seed oil or olive oil. Castor oil is the cleanser, but it has really strong effects so it might dry out your skin... So it's important to keep the castor oil ratio low.

Good luck with everyone who's trying out the OCM!!! I'll post results soon!

what do you thin about ricinus oil?
or which oil would you reccomend for skin with loads of acnes?

has anyone noticed an improvement in complexion using this method?
evened out skin tone?

Yes, absolutely! I haven't even been using the OCM for that long but I'm addicted to it already. I do the routine daily, and I have to say, my skin has a really healthy glow. It has certainly cleared up a lot and really reduced the appearance of annoying dead pimples from senior-year stress!

I love the OCM! It is so worth it- especially financially. It also works very well as a makeup remover too!

Hopefully everyone is removing it with a damp tepid (not hot nor cold, somewhere in the middle of both temperatures) cloth holding skin taut and wiping gently upwards. Dont attempt to splash the oil off, you really need something with substance to help remove the oil, water isnt enough. And afterwards I would use a regular cleanser, like a foaming cleanser or a cleansing milk to really CLEAN your skin.
OCM just preps the skin for cleansing, its not actually 'cleansing' your skin.

^ Oh my!! Thanks for the advice. What I do when I remove the oil is that I start off wiping with a hot face cloth... then I wash the cloth with warm water, wipe again... wash again with cold water then do my final wipes. I find it very relaxing for my skin, but I don't know- could there be disadvantages to my method?

I never actually bothered cleansing afterwards! Will surely start doing so now!

Well just dont wipe with EXTREMELY hot water, that can cause capillaries to burst. Wipe with tepid water (a mix of cold/hot, so pretty much a warm temp) and then when you use the cold rinse make it slightly less cold. Cold water is 'shocking' to the skin.

^ That wasn't how I was told to remove the Dermalogica Precleanse though, LTEC. I was told to dampen my hands and rub the onto my already oiled face until the product turned white/milky & then to rinse with water...

Well yes, you are to apply the PreCleanse oil to dry skin, massage it around, add some water to create a lather, and then rinse. I dont like to personally rinse it with just water, so I use a cloth. Just a matter of preference. :flower:

Sorry to bring this thread back from the dead.

I just placed an order for DHC Cleansing Oil. Anyone tried this?
