Olivia Palermo

Someone made this very interesting comment about Olivia in another thread:

Olivia is glamorous, but imo, she always looks like she's out to prove something.

I thought it was so interesting and I didn't even realize it was true until I read the above. I like Olivia's style, but there IS something too polished about her... like she's imitating a socialite rather than actually dressing as a socialite. Almost a parody, in a way. I guess I feel like she is missing a certain freshness.

Anyone else's thoughts? Her style, to me, is almost too consciously put together.

Well, she DOES have something to prove since she's only known for her ability to put on the right ring with an outfit ;)

IMO you can tell that at least Olivia's trying and that's what makes me love her style, because unlike most celebs nowadays at least she IS trying.

Personally I am tired of the "I couldn't be bothered" look other celebs seem to favour and in that aspect Olivia's groomed style comes across as very fresh to me.

But these are just my five cents about this subject.

^ I TOTALLY agree!! I am so sick of the "I am so cool I can look like I'm out on a three day binge and throw it in your face" look by most of the young celebs today!! Come on- now we're upset that she tries to look good??...This is Alice in Wonderland logic to me... :(

I wouldn't agree with that. I think her style has improved vastly and that she’s carved quite a consistent style (even if I don’t always like it).I don't think that looking pulled together suggests a contrived sense of style in her case.

Now, if you're talking about her style when she first came on to the NY scene, then definitely. In fact her look was almost embarrassingly 'A-Z of trying to look like a socialite.' These outfits are quite hideous and try hard in comparison to her style of the last two years imo

Agree completely!

What is TOO consciously put together? The mere fact that you not mind letting people know you made an effort?

Imo, the oh-I-just-threw-this-on look is so fake and pretentious. As if you're signalling that you are simply just too busy with real "important" things to care about your style. You just accidently ending up looking good because you're that awesome  Or your style is just "inherently" that good. It is not less consciously put together! And it's as fake as the young actresses who pretend like their style is all their own work  *cough stylist! cough*

I love that Olivia is well-groomed and has a polished style. She owns up to the fact that she cares deeply about her style.

^All excellent points! I was trying to think who else comes to mind...Charlize Theron maybe? Gwyneth? Even if you don't care for their look, they make an effort (and are groomed)...
Also- Olivia was born and raised in the NYC/Connecticut social world and is usually seen on the streets of Manhattan, not going to the grocery store in Santa Monica like a lot of the Hollywood slobs, I mean celebs...:innocent:

Well trying to look good is something we have to admire. But yeah, sometimes I think Olivia dresses up for making the media talk about her like " look how good the socialite dresses up" she's not doing it because she likes it. Yeah Olivia's talent is to make incredible outfits, but lately that "talent" seems to go away...

Now that I'm looking carefully I think that is a trouser+blouse+jacket (at first sight I think it was a jumpsuit) whatever, I think is the kind of outfit that Giovanna Battaglia would wear and in my opinion Gio has such more sense of style than Olivia, and the italian would mix it with the right accesories.
Maybe if Olivia would wear the same colour in the sandals than in the clutch perhaps would be better (and IMO the shoes are better in nude than in black haha)
