The 27-year-old heiress, who has been engaged twice and linked with a string of celebrity partners, said that she "played hard to get" with her boyfriends.
Hilton earned notoriety after a sex video she made with former lover Rick Salomon leaked onto the internet, but the party girl told Glamour magazine that she considered herself a feminist icon.
"I'm a strong woman who doesn't depend on a man for anything," she said. "If you give it up to a guy he wont's respect you. He'll want you much more if he can't have you."
Hilton dated Benji Madden, the lead singer in US rock band Good Charlotte, for nine months until he ended their relationship in November. She has previously broken off engagements to the Greek shipping heir Paris Latsis and the model Jason Shaw, and dated a several wealthy men including the a 40-year-old film producer Saloman and the Backstreet Boy Nick Carter.
But Hilton told the magazine that her promiscuous reputation was unjustified.
"I've only ever done it with a couple of people," she said. "People make up stories, but mostly I just kiss. I think it's important to play hard to get."
Last month one of Hilton's homes in Los Angeles was robbed while she was out. The burglars made away with $2 million of jewellery and other valuables, according to reports.
The socialite, whose great-grandfather Conrad founded the Hilton Hotel chain, served time in jail in 2007 for probation violation in a drink-driving case.

There have been hints before, but now evidence seems to be really piling up that PARIS Hilton has no soul.
Page Six reported this morning that the heiress is (for some reason) attending the Sundance Film Festival with the new BFF that she won on her reality TV show, Brittany Flickinger. But apparently the seemingly more under the radar Nicky Hilton has been open about her distaste for the new BFF, leading Paris to give Flickinger the cold shoulder.
Nicky told Paris that she couldn’t stay with her at a friend’s house if Brittany was there, so Paris had to rent a condo and stay with Danity Kane singer Aubrey O’Day. Easily distracted, Hilton evidently found an even newer BFF. From Page Six:“Paris kept ditching Brittany for Aubrey,” said our source. Friday night, the two left Flickinger at the Eldridge and went across the street to Tao, where the former Best Friend Forever found them at 2 a.m. “She was crying and screaming, ‘Paris, stop leaving me!’ ” said our snitch. Poor Brittany, whose only crime was believing that reality television + Paris Hilton = friendship.”In addition, Reuters reported that Paris shamelessly grabbed 30 bags of free merchandise while she was at the festival. Since we know she’s not hurting for money, we’ll have to surmise that she was going to use them to bribe other unassuming girls to follow her around as her BFF once she gets tired of O’Day.
Hilton takes the stand to slam failed publicity claims

Paris Hilton took to the stand in a Miami, Florida court on Friday - hitting out at allegations she failed to fully promote her 2006 movie flop Pledge This!
The hotel heiress is being sued for breach of contract by bosses at Worldwide Entertainment Group Inc., who claim she neglected to honor promotion and publicity agreements for the film and owes investors a massive $8.3 million.
The movie executives claim Hilton was paid $1 million for her acting services and for "reasonable promotion and publicity" for the film, which featured the socialite/actress as the president of an exclusive sorority.
After the socialite's legal team failed to get the lawsuit dismissed in May, Hilton was forced to attend the trial to defend herself against the claims.
In true Hilton style, the hotel heiress attended court in a black dress and high stilettos, and even gave the judge a cheeky wave.
She told the courtroom that the film's failure had nothing to do with her - insisting she takes promotional work for her ventures very seriously.
She told Judge Federico Moreno, "If I have my name attached to something, I want it to be as big as it can be."
Hilton went on to admit that by the time it was expected for her to promote the DVD release of the film, she was already booked up for rehearsals for her next film, The Hottie & The Nottie in 2008.
The trial continues.
