Peter Hawkings - Designer

Hawkings TF’s looked maybe like an updated and nervous version of Tom but it lacked the humor and the sophistication in the details. I remember some ugly gold buttons on the peacoats of his second collection.

What's your beef with those gold-button peacoats? I just find gold buttons to be so tacky, that’s why I can't stand those Balmain blazers for the longest time.

What Peter’s missing is confidence. TF should be bold, opulent but also full of humor. And that's what Peter failed to deliver.

I like gold buttons but it’s like leopard, one detail can make it tacky.
Those buttons looks like my grandma 80’s earrings repurposed as buttons. And the shade of gold is not the best either.

Weirdly, as tacky Balmain’s aesthetic can be, with subtle details like gold buttons and leopard prints or things like that, Rousteing display a quite fine taste.

And I agree with what you said about Peter. For someone who said that he wanted the job for so long, his collections didn’t showed that. However, his campaigns showed a great sense of story telling.

I can’t forget the fact that they paid Iris Law to attend his show. Now, at least, a bit of prestige is back.

I would love to see Hawkings evolve in another environment though. His kind of sexy may have an impact somewhere in Milan.

In any case, in my opinion one of the weak points of this Tom Ford was the styling, I would have focused on George Cortina or Carine Roitfeld
like many long term nr 2 of creative directors many don't have a own voice and are good or loyal to follow a lead of the creative mind but the cant build the world on their own.
Virginie Viard, we're talking to you hahahaha

she at least sold well lol and you could see she never pretended to be more or a star compared to peter hawkings.

i rather have a work horse than a show pony.

Hawkings had great campaigns, but I can't remember a single thing he has shown on the runway. A collection might be tacky or even ugly, but should never be instantly forgettable. Some people should just stay in the studio as assistants/directors, nothing wrong with that.

Yes George Cortina maybe.
I think Carine shouldn’t style shows anymore. She uses her tricks and the formula can be tired. I think under Tom, the styling was better with Katy England than Carine…Even when I liked the collections.

To his credit, sales for the fashion didn’t decreased when he took over. Yes, Tom Ford is not that big but still.
And for some reason, it seems like Tom Ford eyewear pushed their marketing harder. The yellow lenses sunglasses have been everywhere for like 2 years.
