Petite Fashion

Unfortunately, it's hard to find real petite clothes outside of the regular retail lines because many in the fashion industry want to fit taller people. It's easier to alter sizes that are too big than sizes that are too small. Unfortunately it means that it's more difficult for short women to buy higher end jackets and tops, especially if we have proprtionate or shorter torsos. To be a little harsher, I think the industry just wants to leave us out, because they don't think shorter women can ever be "elegant." We're cute and pretty at most, but never glamourous, beautiful or elegant.

Tamiece is a petites-only line. The line participated in San Fran fashion week this year.

I've heard the ladies at work mention Esprit and Benetton as good options for petite women.

Topshop do petites. They now ship to the US too.

i run into the same problem! i'm 5'0'' but i have hips! all my jeans are wayyyy too long:-/ & get tattered on the ends because i'm too lazy to have them tailored & i end up stepping all over them

Not sure how hippy you are, but Levi's recently came out with a line of petite jeans. The sizes run a little big so it might not work if you're very thin, but if you can find a pair that fits you in the hips, they're cute and *very* comfortable. I'm 5'0" as well, and the length is perfect. They're long-lasting, too -- I've been heavily abusing my pair since I got them in June and they still haven't shown any signs of beginning to tear (I know a few months is nothing spectacular, but I've gotten so used to crappy quality and pants that fall apart after 10 washes that my standars are very low these days). I always thought the "man doing anything for his jeans" Levi's commercials were lame, but I've become a convert.

Speaking of jeans, "high-end" in particular, I know JBrand makes size 23 (you might be able to special order at revolveclothing.com), and Paige size 24 is pretty tiny, and Paige recently came out with a petite denim line.

I'm also really short, and I do find it frustrating to have to hem everything. I even have to take my knee-high boots to the cobbler to take off about 1 to 1.5 inches off the top to correct the proportion.

I find that European designers fit me really well. I'm lucky that I live in NYC, I find a lot of Dolce & Gabbana on sale at discount stores, and the brand always fits me well in the hips/thighs, although I still have to hem. I don't shop at Gap/Old Navy/Banana Republic/Club Monaco at all because their cuts are way too roomy.

A huge problem I have is finding coats that fit!!! Whenever I go to department stores, even a 2 is huge. I've had luck with JCrew Petite 0 coats, but their styles are so boring...

I have a designer friend who is currently constructing a collection for petite women, and she needs measurements (shoulder, waist, hip, bust, inseam etc) for proper fitting, can you ladies pm me with your measurements if its no trouble? Thanks a lot.

tia - I get my basic work shoes from Gap Kids. I know that sounds weird but I have the cutest shoes from there and they last really well. I'm a curvy petite so I don't have a problem with finding things that are waist size too small. Just inseam (though a 32 will usually be okay) and shoulders are the worst.

Hi!

inseam should be around 29-30"
distance from waist to hips should be shorter than of regular sizes (1 inch or so)

25,37, and then my leg is 28 god cant believe im posting this on the internet lol :(

karma for you! By your sizes though, I would be considered petite. I wear regular small or x-small sizing though. My waist is 27 and my inseam is 30. I don't have any trouble finding jeans that fit me. I think stores like Ann Taylor do not tailor well to pants. For trousers I buy from Guess, Bebe and the best brand of jeans that fit me are l.e.i's.
