How Did You Get Interested In Fashion?

Great question...I have been interested in clothes and fashion for as long as I can remember too.My brother is the same way, although our parents could care less what they wore.

Through the years I have made friends who share this passion (and a passion for shopping!! ) .

I think my grandma  (weird I know) introduced me to all of this fashion stuff. She was crazy about designer clothes, handbags etc. I thought she was crazy spending all that money ( I still do ). I guess I just kinda got sucked in to this stuff.

Hmmm ... my mother isn't interested in fashion, clothes for her are just something required to leave the house, and a bag is something to throw your stuff in ... I do have an aunt who was interested in fashion when I was growing up.

I can think of two things ... the scrap quilt my great-grandmother made that was on my bed when I was little (3-4) got me interested in color and color interplay. I was also (this is innate) always very sensitive to ugliness and beauty. Growing up in the 70s, there was plenty to hate :P I was also bothered by things that were almost universally ugly and didn't have to be, and there were several things I promised myself would never figure in my life as an adult, two of them being blue safety checks (the ones with the zigzag pattern) and gold ball earrings, which were de rigeur where I grew up.

When I started junior high, clothes started to matter more, and I started to assert myself more and spend my own money on things. I still have the first really expensive item of clothing I ever bought (in high school)--I keep a small group of things for sentimental reasons.

I wasn't into fashion at all really, until a friend made me read confessions of a shopaholic. I couldn't STAND the character, I thought, how silly she was.. But when i re read it I realized I was JUST LIKE HER. And for some reason after that I started thinking about clothes more. Then it just began to steam roll out of control.

My mother has always been an RN, so most of her wardrobe consists of scrubs and uniforms.

My father was NEVER interested in fashion.

My brother was very savvy as a teen (and did some modeling) but now (age 32) he doesnt care very much.

For me - I dont know how I got interested in fashion. I guess I like to look my best and its easy for me to look bad! LOL

I always drew sketches and designed dresses. I still keep all of my sketches actually.

Hmm...I think I started getting interested in clothes in general in sixth grade when I went into this clothing store and tried on all this stuff totally out of the norm for me. It was kind of a fascinating experience. And then I started drawing clothes...mainly pretty skirts and dresses with lots of ruffles and bows...

But fashion turned into pretty much an obsession when I started high school and my parents insisted I get a part time job in order to "learn the value of money" as they put it. Little did they know that this plan would really kind of backfire on them. I got a job at a gift shop, and when I was bored I would read magazines. Well one day I picked up Vogue to see what all the fuss was about. I was hooked and started reading it along with Harper's Bazaar and other fashion magazines every month. And learned to love pretty, well-made clothes and yearned for them even more because they aren't even remotely available in this area ("high end"=abercrombie). I guess that's when I started getting into the aesthetic qualities of clothing and really developing my own personal style and whatnot. And I still love the ruffles and bows.

I love social history, the lifestyles of different classes in different cultures etc. Everything from what they wore to what their opinions were, then I became obsessed by Tudor costume, then I discovered you can talk about this stuff on the internet...and here I am. happily addicted :woot:

my mom... and fascination of super models! If only i were 5'9"... heh

I been interested in fashion as long as I can remember. I used to draw dresses and clothes for all kinds of occasions when I was only like 5 years old. I would base a lot of the dresses on Disney princess dresses. Also my mom had like 3 buckets of dress up clothes which were her old clothes and shoes from the 70s and 80s. I used to love them, there isnt a single picture of me as a little kid where I wasn't modeling in my dress up clothes. Also my grandmother used to buy me vintage jewelry every time she would see me which I would pair with the clothes. Also I collected Barbie clothes. As I'm getting older I get more and more obbssesed!

my mom has a boutique for children. She used to model too.
her niece is a designer.
my niece is a national model and also loves clothes.(she's like my twin sis:heart:)
my father is a writer, director & teacher. He loveslabels like Hugo Boss,Dries van Noten etc..So we often go to Paris,Lille,Antwerp,..to shop.
my little brother is very fashionable.

So it's a bit in the family ^_^

Nature or nurture? I've been aware of the power of self-expression through fashion as long as I can remember. There were plenty of examples on both sides of my family tree. We have different styles but we all love clothing and accessories.

How did you first become interested in clothes/style/fashion?

How did you first become interested in clothes/style/fashion?

For me it started when I was in college going to art school, and I was making collages and started buying fashion magazines because they had the best pictures for me to use. My favorites were things like I-d and the Face and I'd always end up looking at the clothes in the pictures, and seeing stuff like Comme des Garcons and Martin Margiela, Chalayan, Yamamoto, etc, and thought "wow, this stuff is cool!" Then I moved to NYC and started going into botiques and looking for designer things on eBay to get for cheap since I couldn't afford buying it new. Once I got some really high-quality pieces I realized just what a difference there was between that and more mass-market clothing, and loved both the design and craftsmanship, and also just felt great and more confident wearing them. And thus started a VERY expensive (but very fun and rewarding) hobby!

I've been obsessed with looking good since elementary school. I remember seeing this girl wearing velvet, so I wanted something velvet too! From then on I just became really picky about clothes, and in middle school it was more like I was trying to figure out what looked good. It wasn't really until high school that people started noticing my clothes and asking for fashion advice :P. I'm a senior now and I can honestly say there are at most, five people at my school that actually know how to dress themselves. Everyone is a trend follower, since I refuse to be one of them I guess that is what makes me stand out. I occasionally find designer clothes that I absolutely adore, but would NEVER shovel out that much money to pay for it at my age, it sucks not to have that much money, but fashion-wise it feels good to know what you're doing at so young an age :D

Well, as long as I can remember myself, I was always interested in these things. I was always reading my mother's fashion magazines, sketching clothes and checking other girls' outfits.
I always said that when I grow up I will become a fashion designer. I never had a doubt and I never wanted to be something else.
Now that I am a "grown-up" (technically), I have a very steady and well-paid office job (nothing to do with fashion design).
But I haven't given up. In a month I'm starting a styling & make up course and I decided that I'm more interested in styling and/or working in magazines than in fashion design itself.
So basically, in my whole life I was like that, reading lots of magazines, interested in other people's style etc. And I'm so glad that I have found a new great source of inspiration:INTERNET. And especially TFS! I never thought that there would be so many people out there like me, sharing the same passion

My grandmother always made elaborate costumes for Halloween. I think her job required that she dressed up and she loved making the costumes. She and my grandfather would go out all dolled up to the costume contests and most years they would win. Even when it wasn’t Halloween they would go out in matching out fits that were often made by her and enter dance competitions at local clubs. I think I remember a picture of her in one of the flapper dresses (hot pink and black, with a feather hat). So as a child I saw this glorified rendition of fashion and fun = money and happiness. I think that is where it started for me. My grandmother taught me how to sew and alter patterns. I have done some commissioned work but mostly I just dream of what I could do with certain fabrics and make things for my self. In my teens really enjoyed the shopping ritual with friends and it was more about socializing than fashion, although we always found killer items. I wish I still had that much time to spend in thrift shops and yard sales…

i think i grew into being interested about fashion. i have always cared how i look but during comperhensive school i just did not know how to dress. i just put on everything that i thought looked good and in fact i get sick when i look at those old photos.
one of the reasons for my bad dressing and not being stylish was the fact that i was shopping with my mom (i do love her ) and our taste in clothes just did not go hand in hand. i ended up looking a copy of my mom..
maybe when i went to high-school, which was really concern about outlooks, i started to be more interested about fashion. then i started to buy all the magazines and i grew into it. i had to raise myself to be interested about fashion :D and now my mom is frustrated with me because i'm always talking about new things to try and buy

I have always been big in fashion. In first grade i had to match, i had to have better clothes and more unique style than most kids. in 5th grade i loved drawing dresses and models and all through junior high i would draw so many garments. I have all my drawings and some are very nice but other are weird.

I've always been into dressing up, too. I had a friend who was obsessed with fashion from very early on (she was like 8 and I was 6 years old) and I remember when she got her first Vogue, and we were hooked! We used to do fashion shows (for "Versace"..her father's an artist so he'd put it all together for the stage, and we'd just wear whatever we had and pretend it was haute couture, haha!) for our friends, family and neighbors for many years. We had like a narrator and everything, and it was the coolest thing back then. Great fun.
I lost my interest in fashion for a while when I became a rebellious teen, and I'd just dress up into my mom's and her family's old things from the 60's (come to think of it NOW, I was pretty cool, but everyone didn't get it obviously) but a couple of years ago my love for fashion returned. I'm not a brand-wh*re or anything, I still love my vintage, but the great thing is to mix these worlds together. For me it's not that serious. Fashion is fun.
