Photoshop for fashion yay or nay

how do you make the arm smaller without making the dress look too blurred?

The 'Liquify' tool. You just use the 'Freeze Mask' to block out the areas you don't want to change proportionally and then click and drag the edges of the arms in. I can't remember if 'Liquify' is available in CS1, but I know damn well it's in CS2-3. 'Liquify' is hella memory heavy though, specially with large files, so watch out. Save your work.

Oh those versions... I only have # 6

thanks! i never really learnt to use it with a manual...just playing with it for years. Will try that now!!!

the results are only as good as the 'artist' behind the computer. in capable and experienced hands, they can look very real. Other times they can look like something a high school student can do after dabbling in PS. Sadly, most of the time, its the latter

yes, liquify, is one of the best retouching tools in the package. no better way to loose 5 pounds and still retain your bustline. :D

I think Photoshop is an excellent tool. I agree with some that it should not be used to make a person look like someone they are not. Especially if they are claiming that the edited photo is the same as the actual person. Also, I see a lot of amateur photographers that photoshop too much, and it is blatantly obvious that they've retouched the photo, and done a poor job at that.

I use photoshop on a daily basis. I don't take photos for fashion, but in the interior design industry. It's great for me, because I'll just remove an outlet that is distracting, or take the reflection out of the mirror. It makes my job easier rather then arranging the perfect setting before taking my photos. Also, I find that even though I have a Canon, photoshop is very effective in helping to bring out the true colors of an item, or change the lighting.

I think its fabulous software, and when used properly can be a huge asset to the artist who is using it.

I think it's a gift and a curse. It allows us to see beyond where the photographer left off. However, the industry is relying more and more heavily on photoshop to do more and more. Pretty soon they will make cgi models to wear the clothes.

^ i think that could happen!

Even, anybody could stick some of those photosensitive bobbles to themselves (that are used for motion capture in videogames and films) and then they could control a CG model's body.

But that would only be good for things like catalogue production. What about artistic editorials...a cg model couldn't inspire photographers.

Which means photographers jobs are also at stake. Hopefully it won't happen, but a photoshop artist could take the place of a model and a photographer!

this is kind of off topic :innocent: but my photoshop is messed up  when i try to use text, it appears impossibly small...even making font size of over 3000 its too small. how can i make it go back to normal?:cry:

Um, no:

Nobody has arms as smooth as that. And her head is too big for her body! America is beautiful in real life and they made her look like a bobble-head doll. The funny part is the article praises her for maintaining a healthy figure in the midst of this thin-minded culture, yet what do they go and do? Photoshop her into thin oblivion on the cover.

When you make a new image, what is your dpi set at? You can check this if you have an image open already by going to Image Size. If it's extremely high, you can lower it. When making a new image, make sure the dpi is no higher than 300 or 400 unless you're a professional making a high-resolution photo for professional purposes.

wow that is really weird... definitely she looks more 'balanced' and proper proportion-wise in the first photo; so what they're after here is an ideal
it's quite different from the other model posted in this thread, who has a thinner body--they had to edit her because her body was in such a position she looked very awkward and perhaps missing an arm, etc.

Photoshop is a tool, just like a camera is. Combining the two takes the soul out of some pics, but can rescue others.

The pic illustrates this well, I think.

Nay for Photoshopping because I think it's insulting for the models/celebrities.

(And I think Photoshop is a complicated program...I hate using mine! I like Paint Shop Pro better :D)

Her arms are to small for her body and her head is in a wrong proportion on that cover photo.
But I think if you would have put a picture on the cover which wasn't photoshoped, the magazine would sell less.

I know the retoucher who did this...

He does great work and it is all client-driven retouching. In other words, it's the magazine and the celeb that want the changes, the retoucher is not just going in there with artistic impunity...

If you want to see some more before and after stuff, checkout his website, it's a fun waste of time :)

retouchers won't replace photogs

Any more than digital actors will replace real ones...

It is just another tool in a savvy photographer's toolbox, don't overhype the power of retouching. The old rule of garbage in, garbage out still applies...
