Research Help

I'm doing a paper for my research analysis the topics are open-ended
but I preferably want to do it on fashion...focusing on magazines
but I am stuck on what I should actually write about. Any interesting
topic on fashion u can come up with is fine as well:blush:

"Comparables" to American Apparel?

Hope this is in the right forum...

Anyways, I have to do a report on a company for my business class and I chose American Apparel. I have to talk about "comparable" companies (both ones that AA could influence or those that influence AA), but I'm not sure what to compare it to. I was thinking Fruit of the Loom would be a good choice, since they make basics-someone suggested Calvin Klein as well. Any other suggestions (of North American companies)?

Just a thought: What about the angle that they use almost no offshore labor (no sweat shops, etc.), and are active in enviornmental, gay rights and immigrant issues? That they are marketing themselves as a PC company? I can't, off hand, think of other companies that have those sort of policies, but I"m sure there are many. Of course, if you look at it from tha angle ... then you would not have to compare them to a "basics" manufacturer ... it could be any type of company that manufactures anything, not just clothing.

Hope this is in the right forum...

there is also, american vintage and alternative apparel that could be compared to AA (I had to do a report on AA and I use both these companies)

Hope this is the right place to ask!
I'm doing a fashion/textiles course and for our exam sketchbook/piece we get to choose one of a few titles.
I chose 'organic forms' so that's basically ANYTHING to do with nature.
What I have to do is: study textile artists & fashion designers who use this method & I can be inspired from, then create my own samples etc.
Can anybody name any designers/collections I could look at? I've done a few searches through the Trend Spotting forum but it's really too broad a criteria for a search like that. If anyone has ANY ideas whatsoever, pleeease tell me!
(oh, and I've already done Alexander McQueen, I don't know WHAT I would have done without his s/s10 collection, its a wonder for my project!)

This is the exact place to ask.

Since you haven't posted her a lot, yet ... I did a search on your behalf (searcing thread titles ... keywords: textile, textiles, texture, textures, organic) and found 3 pages of threads from various forums. Not exactly what you asked but the following seem like they might contain some helpful information and inspiration for you and might lead you to something else helpful:

The pencil skirt

hey everyone,
I'm studying fashion and branding at the amsterdam fashion institute and right now i'm working on a group assignment about the pencil skirt.
We are researching all kinds of brands that sell this clothing items. since i'm living in amsterdam it is hard for me to research the american market and get opinions on the pencil skirt from us americans.
if you have a minute to tell me something about your opinion on pencil skirt (what do you associate with it, what does it stand for in your personal opinion, do you own one - if yes, why and on which occasions do you wear it, etc)
just whatever you can think of would help me alot by getting more information about it.
also some information about your background, what kind of person you are and what brands you like would help alot!

thank you very much,

casey

It's always been a staple in most women's wardrobe. It think, but I am not sure ... the Coco Chanel may have invented this look ... with her first Chanel suits.

In the 50's it was called the straight skirt (the "pencil" name is much more recent). It always reminded me of what a "secretary" would wear back then ... and with what they called "sweater girls", too. So ... I always think of pencil skirts as classic office wear but with some sex appeal. In fact, in the 60's, Mary Tyler Moore made a sensation wearing a pencil skirt on the Dick Van **** show. You could actually see the curve of her buttocks, which was considered very daring for TV at that time.

And nowadays, it still can be office attire or club attire, depending on what you top it with. I wear pencil skirts to dinner, to parties that are neither extremely dressy or casual, when I meet clients .... anywhere I want to look a bit dressy, but not overdone. The pencil skirt is probably the most versatile thing I have in my wardrobe ... I have several in different colors.

I"m a middle aged woman who is a stylist (just catalogs and stuff, basic clothes, not high fashion) but I used to work selling real estate, and before that I was a bank manager. I've used it in all three professions. I have an active social life here in L.A. and travel a lot ... so the pencil skirt is still my friend. It's ageless ... which I like. It can look good on a woman of any age.

I actually don't prefer one brand of pencil skirt over another ... the are so simple and so classic, that it really doesn't matter to me. It's how you accessorize it that makes the difference.

Hey all
I'm writing a feature for a university project on the history of real fur and taxidermy used in fashion, so dating way back leading up to now, all the key moments where it was in fashion and things like certain uses getting a lot of publicity, eg. a celeb wearing a fox around their neck?
Anyway I was wondering if anyone here could help me by sharing any historical moments that theyre aware of or if anyone knows where I can find this info? I'm trying to build up a bit of a timeline to make the feature flow but I have some big gaps where I'm unsure of anything big happening.
The main time frame I'm hoping to fill is kind of 1900's up to about 2000, it's obviously a lot easier to find articles etc on things that have happened more recently and gotten a lot of attention, and some come from memory due to being alive at this time haha always helps...
Thanks :flower:

Hey everyone I have this French project and it needs to be done on a Francophone person from a French speaking country. I was going to do Belgium and I knew that Diane Von Furstenberg was from there, but I need to know one thing in order to finalize my subject. Does anyone know if Diane Von Furstenberg speaks french?

Thanks in advance!

Yes Diane does speak French, she spoke fluently in an interview with Mademoiselle Agnes for Dressed up for Summer 2010 (habillees pour l'ete 2010) its available on Sundance Channel's website, i can't remember which episode though

Oversaturation of Fashion Infomation & Market on the Web What's Next?

Hey Fashion Peeps,

I'm doing some research into fashion on the web, with such a saturation of fashion information and products readily available, what do you believe that people are still looking for that's not available? Does all of this information just confuse people?

Would love to hear your thoughts x

Hi all, wondering if anyone could help me with this...

For one of my classes, I'm making a website for a final project, and I would like to use images (such as model polaroids) and I would like to know how I should go about requesting permission from the copyright holders? Whoever took the shots would be the copyright holder, I've been told, but would I just conact the modelling agencies who released the polaroids? Or what? Also, would it have to be a hard-copy permission form, or could it be simply be done by email?

The website will not be going publically online - it's purely just for my studies and will be only shown to students and my tutor.

Thanks in advance for any help :flower:

You are correct ... the photographer is the copyright holder, at least in most cases. In the case of model polaroids ... most likely they were taken by the agency, so they would be the copyright holder. So I would start there and ask them.

If you are using test shots from their portfolios, then the copyright is still with the photographer and that might be harder to track down ... because a lot of times the agency won't have a record of who shot them. And if you are using magazine tears ... the magazine is the copyright holder, most of the time ... depending on the contract they had with the photographer, when the picture was shot.

BTW, most agencies think they own the copyrights to any and all pics in their models' portfolios because they may have gotten a signed release from the photogs. But they are mistaken. Most releases are just permission for them to use them in promoting the model, but not to let anyone else use them. The photog and/or the magazine still own the copyrights.

Now ... probably the copyright holder won't even care ... since you are not distributing the pictures nor are doing nothing with them to make a profit and you could probably get away with it without a hitch, for your class. But the agency will care about how the images of their models will be used ... they don't want them just "out there" without permission. So, at the very least ... ask the agency.

However ... to be 100% legal ... you need permission in writing from the actual photographer or the agency in the case of any polaroids they took. Emails are OK for permission, nowadays .. since they can be tied to an individual.

Hello guys!
I'm doing a research paper on my career which is fashion designer.
Basically this is what I need the most help on...

Preparation
Additional Training (i.e. internships, aprenticeships ect.) I would suppose you'd get an intership via your university? so maybe it wont be so hard to look up lol

Qualifications and/or Advanced Opportunities
Exams
License/Certification
Experience
Additional Education/Training (Post graduate or on the job training)

Advantages and Disadvantages
Working conditions
Hours (shift work, flexibility, ect.)
Physical and Mental Demads of Job
Hazards

Oh and salary (beginning to experienced).
Who pays the designer? the company that owns the brand? Like lets say Marc Jacobs... both of his brands Marc Jacobs and LV are owned by LVMH, does LVMH pay him?

THANKS!!! :flower:

Thanks for the info, Bette!

Yep, I only intend to use polaroids, not test photography.

I wasn't sure how formal the request has to be, so I've sent out an email to my university (discovered they had a copyright office) asking if they have any sample request letters or the like. I wouldn't have a problem sending out hard copies if needed be, but I figured email would be more efficient. I'll update you on how it goes! Thanks again :flower:
