I think we've all found some truly dumb, expensive, pointless products that just don't work, or are simply home remedies repackaged as luxury cosmetics ... So I thought we could share our finds!

I immediately thought of the Pointless Designer Accessories thread, and figured it could be fun to have a similar thread about beauty/skincare products, when I stumbled upon this gem at Chanel:

MICRO SOLUTIONS

WRINKLE NEUTRALIZING TREATMENT

Perfect control of the impact of muscle contractions at the origin of expression lines.

The Wrinkle Neutralizing Treatment features a revolutionary gel-patch system that provides immediate and long-term action to "block" involuntary facial movements made while you sleep. Night after night, these muscle contractions are calmed and, as a result, expression lines fade.

Rather like a botulinum toxin injection, the applicator pen releases a drop of a fresh and elastic gel that acts as an ultra-precise "fixer" for each expression line. There is no discomfort, nor does the skin "pull" or have an artificial, frozen look.

Forehead lines, crow's-feet and frown lines are visibly and instantly corrected. They stop deepening and are less obvious. Gradually, the face looks serene again.

The Wrinkle Neutralizing Treatment should only be used at night. The set contains the 1.5 ml/0.05oz applicator pen with a special tip and an exclusive massage instrument to relax expression lines before the fixing gel-patch is applied.

^ This is basically a "unique" skin massage tool and liquid tape...!

If you believe that taping your skin works in preventing wrinkles you would basically save a lot of money by buying actual tape. This minimal package retails for about $185...

The power of good advertising....sells anything doesnt it!!!

I remember reading in Allure that toner is absolutely useless except it makes your skin feel cleaner, even though it isnt.

^i no i stopped using toner as it did nothing for my skin. there is also cuticle remover cream that i have which is pretty pointless and does nothing to my cuticles.

I have to agree on pretty much all those counts.

Also Lancome had an eyeshadow primer-concealer would work better.

I vote for LipVenom (or just about any lip "plumper"). Like I said in the LipVenom thread: All it did for me was burn and make my lip line red. It just looked...wrong.

Well lipvenom works for a lot of people I know. Some people are just allergic.

i think toner is pointless if you have normal skin but i'm really oily and if i dont use it i notice a huge difference i stick with gentle alcohol free formulas but if i use nothing my face revolts, i can use a scrub after my normal cleanser instead but somehow i just need that extra step...

but things i do find pointless are:

-night cream
-eye cream ( i agree it needs moisture but my normal moisturizer with spf does fine as long as it doesnt sting )
-shine controlling powders ( i find they suck all the oil out of the skin but leave it on the surface, try tea tree oil and aloe vera to dissolve the shine )
-agree on cuticle cream ( they always add all these extra steps to manicure how to's )
-in most cases lipliner is unneccessary

-eye cream

I like to have a seperate eye cream that's of a thinner consistency than my regular moisturizer. But it doesn't really need to say "eye cream". I've actually found some eye creams that are really thick. :yuk:

I agree on toner too. My mom and I both have oily skin and I was raised to strip my face of all it's oil using harsh toners. No wonder my face was always slick! I find that a gentle cleanser is the best solution.

I'm sure I have plenty of useless things lying around, but I haven't had the chance to throw them away yet.. :innocent:

I also don't believe that toner is needed to be really clean. And I absolutely don't believe it's an essential step which preps and somehow turbo-charges your skin for the serum and/or moisturiser that follows.

I actually use a toner, but that's because I want something a bit astringent, not because I think it's a basic necessity...

I know this one may spur a ton of debate, but I think blush is pointless. I prefer the look of my skin without it. It usually just ends up making me look embarrassed or hot (not in the good way).

i only use toner as kind of an extra step to dissolve oil not to cleanse cause the toner i use has witch hazel and tea tree oil which arent in my cleanser, but otherwise it wouldnt be a necessity

I think any product that claims to get rid of wrinkles is pointless, I actually feel toner is 'nescessary' I guess I just trained myself to believe I can't live without it.

Mary Kay makes this product to "calm" sensitive skin. Why not stop using whatever got your sensitive skin riled up in the first place?? :D ^_^

Toner does finish cleaning your skin if your cleanser didn't do its job--but there again, switch to one that does it right the first time. I think some of them may be mildly moisturizing and help prep the skin for makeup ... there may also be a (pH?) balancing thing going on in some cases ... or so I thought I heard once??

^ Yes, but then we're sort of back where we started... Use a gentle, ph-balanced cleanser and you don't need toner to stabilise anything... And I have never encountered any toner that could replace a real moisturiser.

And I totally agree you should avoid whatever is stressing your skin instead of trying to calm it when it acts up! :P

I have to disagree on this although it probably varies from individual to individual. I have fair pale skin and applying blusher on the correct spot makes me look very much healthier. When I initially started using it, I got loads of comments on how "glowy" and "healthy" I looked. People asked if I was using any special cream. Now if I don't wear blusher, people ask me if I'm not feeling well. :flower:

Well, we have to know exactly which one is suit to our skin. In one famous brand we can not pick all products are good for us. We have to search ourself what necessary and what unnecessary. Age delay eye of Chanel I found its really good, and eye tonic, eye lift, they are fabulous. The cleanser and toner products are awful. My skin became harsh when I used Chanel cleanser. The rectifiance line also not satisfied for me.

If you go to another brand, try the most you need in your daily routine, and compare it. Then, you will know which one is the best for your skin, because everyone has different type of skin.
