POP #49 F/W 2023.24

I almost always complain about kpop stars on covers but I like him, he’s pretty and the cover are good, so call me a hypocrite.

These Kpop princesses— from this guy to Jennie, are all so reliably bland in all their shoots. I wonder if that’s mandated by their handlers to be as AI-generated as possible so as not showcase the slightest of a personality, because it’s all the same blank expressions going-through-the-motions in front of a white seamless. Their shoots are the fashion equivalent of an endless press junket.

^ well they are truly products of marketing, market research etc so yes everything is very controlled and calculated hence how bland it is.

However, this shoot is more pleasant to look at than any of the blackpink’s ones.

Plus to have seen many of these K Pop stars including the Blackpink at shows, they are very average irl. You know they are big because of the completely crazy fans screaming their name.

At least they looks good in the clothes…

It’s funny on post from fashion brands you have fans asking for brands to sign their favorite as Ambassadors…Is it like part of a starter-pack for any K-Pop star?

I think fans feel like their favorites will get some kind of western validation, because for now only BTS and Blackpink are widely know. Blackpink’s media presence doesn’t really match their sales though, it kinda shocked me to know they sold less than Twice and Newjeans in the US, I’ve always thought they were like BTS in the sales department.

Yes, cause thanks to these contracts they can appear in magazines and maybe ads

It is an interesting cover and story but many of these new artistes dont have the charisma to pull off some of these concepts.

I just saw the cover again,it will be +800 pages!!! i think those multicovers payed off...

Do you mean average-looking in terms of physicality? They always give off avatar-vibes. I don’t mean that in a derogatory manner, just that they’re all clearly chosen (and molded with cosmetic surgery and physical training) to look like clones: A plain-Jane vessel for adolescent projection of fantasy relationship and idol worship.

It’s a testament to the well-oiled Kpop industry machine how in control the handlers are of their products that everyone, from editors to brand CEOs kowtow to their one-note “vision”, rather than for the popstars to be transformed into the publications/brands’ ideal. But with a fashion feature in Western publications, you’d think they let loose a little; let them project a whiff of spontaneity, individuality— let the guys grow some facial hair LOL But it’s so strictly on-brand as usual. It’s as chilling as it’s fascinating how controlled these puppets are, like twink versions of The Stepford Wives (…and they’re not even products of North Korea LOL)

(…I just want to slick back his hair and stick a moustache on him, and shoot him on location somewhere, anywhere a bit dirty and grimy (like those Carine x Testino wrestling-in-mud Vogue Paris shoots). Something, anything, to have him look a tad different from the usual Kpop-incorporated template.)

They're literal living dolls!

Exactly! I had V, Lisa and Park Bo-Gum in front of me and I didn't find anything extraordinary in their appearances or even in their attitudes to be impressed by.

There's no mystery, charisma or breathtaking beauty. They have nice features, slim bodies and wear their clothes well, that's all. They're made to look great in photos, fixed... Once they're in motion, the charm is lost. imo. (you need to see them singing or dancing on live, very funny. especially blackpink)

They're a bit like the vanilla flavour: everyone likes it, but you don't necessarily love it.

In short, they're very mass-market hence their success.

It's kind of funny they mention Harry when you know some "Directioners" became fans of BTS or should i say armies :D

The Blackpink girls dancing (and singing live) is a nightmare tbh. So many viral videos making fun of their performances. I wish they had more freedom, they would've been so much more interesting, you can barely see any personality in most of these idols. Won't happen anything soon though, those kpop contracts are horrible, no one wants to get blacklisted lmao Anyway, I'm liking this story a lot, I wish Pop's shipping wasn't so ridiculously expensive.
