Pop Fall / Winter 2010 : Britney Spears by Todd Cole & Takashi Murakami

They excluded the best blond of them all, Lara Stone!

AGREE! The # 1 model! Ah well, she got plenty of really good work anyway! Also I miss Nimue and Mirte
I hate Hanne's shot.
Love Marloes, Doutzen, Ymre.

I imagine Lara wouldn't really ever appear in Pop, being that she's a favourite of Katie Grand's. She'll probably always stick to LOVE.

Sigrid surprisingly has the best shot,i think.overall the blonde ed is a hit and a miss.i hope they do a brunette ambition or redhead ambition next time

^ i vote for redhead ambition next time

apart from the cover which i still can't stomach this magazine has to be one of the best
releases for this month, the content is spectacular. never would've pictured Eniko and Tety
in one editorial but their Rome ed is just gorgeous, scenic and melancholic at the same time.
Blonde Ambition is quite alright, abit on the boring side, nothing outstanding though i do like
the variety in the shots. cant wait for Mcneil's scans for this issue ^_^

 I think I read it in the thread for the S/S issue, but apparently Conde Nast has some sort of retainer on the bigger models which is why they don't appear in magazines like this or something. I hope someone can correct me or fill us in on this.

They did use Doutzen and she usually is categorized as a "bigger" model.

The ironic part of the whole blond spectra is using girls who are anything but blond. I mean at least make them blond using the photoshop skills. :lol

I would have replaced some girls with better options as; Toni Garrn, Kim Noorda, Aline Webber, Caroline Winberg, Sasha Pivovarova, Jessica Stam, Tanya Dziahileva, Elsa Sylvan, Heidi Mount, Magdalena Frackowiak, Karolina Kurkova or even spiced it up with Diandra Forrest.

Happy to see Hana Soukupova!

Katie Grand is probably going through the threads at TFS becaue this issue(even with the Blond fiasco editorial) is quality oriented.

A little insight about Britney's cover I thought you'd like to know...

Magazine shoot really manga child p*rn protest art?

Britney Spears new Pop magazine photoshoot with famed Japanese artist Takashi Murakami already caused a small online stir due to it’s surprising and unique style, but now it’s set to make waves for a whole different reason, after popular gaming website Kotaku published an article today claiming that the shoot is actually a political protest around manga art that could possibly be labeled as child p*rn.

Britney’s two Pop covers depict the superstar dressed in a skimpy wedding gown in one and wearing a blue bathing suit in another, carrying a red backpack while striking an eerie, Lolita-esque pose. The same image is used on the cover of controversial manga “My Wife Is A Grade Schooler”, which was almost banned due to it’s depiction of underage characters engaging in sexual acts. Take a look at an excerpt from the Kotaku article, below:

Back when the Tokyo Municipal government was looking to ban the questionable depictions of underage characters in anime, manga and video games, My Wife Is A Grade Schooler, an out of print manga, was fingered as an example of a work that depicted young characters in an inappropriate manner.

When the manga was shown on television, yellow Post-its were used to cover the suggestive bits. However, the Post-its made the manga appear more suggestive than it actually is. The manga itself is considered a “gag manga” and even social criticism. It apparently isn’t as bad as it looks, and some said the way it was handled on TV was political scapegoating. The cover of “My Wife Is A Grade Schooler” (pictured) echoes the imagery used in the Spears’ photographs. Same red backpack, same blue bathing, wedding dress.

The references to “My Wife Is A Grade Schooler” are no mere coincidence either: Takashi and the author of the manga, Seiji Matsuyama, have been seen Tweeting each other about the relations between the shoot and the erotic Grade Schooler art. Matsuyama even referred to the Takashi shoot as, “Takashi Murakami x Britney Spears x My Wife Is A Grade Schooler collaboration”.

However, the most surprising part of the whole saga is that Britney herself may have been aware of what was going on. Not only do Pop Magazine directly refer to the shoot as “inspired by the manga artist Seiji Matsuyama”, but Britney herself even reveals in the accompanying interview that she was involved in the photoshoot and looked at certain manga chracters to get “a feel” for the vibe of the shoot.

“I loved working with Takashi…,” says Spears. “We looked at a lot of manga characters and artwork before we shot, so I could get a feel for what he was looking for. It was one of the most interesting shoots I’ve ever been on. He’s a genius!”

Certainly there would be none better than Britney Spears to make this type of artistic statement, considering that she began her career as an underage school girl channeling Nabokov’s Lolita.

The question that Kotaku are posing, is did Britney know how deep the connotations behind these photos ran? Was she trying to creative controversy, like she has so often done throughout her 12 year-career, or was she unknowingly used as the face of a political statement that was much more serious than she could have originally known?

Agree with you. I think with Lara it has indeed to do with that Lara is a Katie Grands favourite..

Lot of names you mention shou'ld have been there

blonde ambition ed are so gorgeous, poor some pics in B&W!

they should put lara too :(

To be totally honest, I'm a bit disappointed with Blonde Ambition. When I saw the first preview, I thought it was going to be a brilliant ed but the scans that I've seen so far are nothing impressive. I too don't like black and white pics but I have to admit that some of them are the best of what I've seen so far. I'm really looking forward to the rest of the editorial so I can make a better judgement.

I really wanted to like this cover seeing as I love Japanese Kawaii but this is so unattractive. Britney couldn't pass as a "Lolita" (anymore) to save her life and the sickening blur effect ruins anything the cover could of been. I still enjoy Britney as a person but this is just so unappealing to me.
